It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing last Saturday of one of the greats of our sport, Dean Nottle.
Dean and I started playing boccia at the same time. In fact, we both went to the same Come-And-Try day in Woy Woy in, I think, 2011. We were both old blokes, relatively, so we naturally gravitated towards each other. Dean was very quickly classified as a BC4 and went on to have a huge impact on Boccia in Australia. He represented Australia in Hong Kong and was appointed captain of the Australian team to compete in the Asia/Oceania Regional Titles in Sydney in 2013. You can read more about Dean's time in boccia in the Athletes' Virtual Hall of Fame on the Boccia NSW website, but I'd like to say that, as a person, Dean was intelligent, well educated, kind and generous, and had a delicious sense of humour. It was Dean who inspired me to learn how to play with my left arm as well as my right, but it is his humility and sense of fairness that I will remember him for most.
Dean died quietly at home at the age of 72 with his wife, Victoria, and his family around him.
Boccia needs more people like Dean Nottle.
