Scientists hail ‘smart’ insulin that responds to changing blood sugar levels in real time 12/08/2024

Exciting type 1 diabetes (T1D) research news this morning, with six smart insulin projects funded by the Type 1 Diabetes Grand Challenge. Glucose-responsive, or ‘smart insulins’, are designed to mimic the natural action of the pancreas and respond to blood glucose levels in real time.

The Type 1 Diabetes Grand Challenge is a partnership between JDRF UK, Diabetes UK, and Steve Morgan Foundation.

The funded projects include one headed up by Professor Christoph Hagemeyer, from Australia’s Monash University

New insulin formulations represent real hope for transforming T1D management.

Absolutely thrilled for Lachie Kennedy and the entire Australian 4x100m men's relay team! They didn’t just break the Australian national record of 38.17 seconds—they shattered it, blazing through the heats with the sixth fastest time at the Paris 2024 Olympics! 💙

At just 20 years old, he is lighting the way for young people living with type 1 diabetes, proving that nothing can hold you back from chasing your dreams. 🌟

Thank you, Lachie Kennedy, for being an incredible inspiration and role model in the T1D community! We’re all cheering you on!

We’re asking the Government for $50 million to fund type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Why?

Because research holds the key for creating a world without T1D.

Because the future of over 130,000 Australians and counting depends on it.

🎉 Congratulations to our National Volunteer of the Year 🎉, 14-year-old Giselle, who received this momentous accolade from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at Kirribilli House this morning.

Giselle has been a passionate advocate in making a real difference to people, like herself, living with type 1 diabetes, and making her voice heard towards improving lives.

She even had a personal letter from the Prime Minister excusing her for being late to school today!

💙 We are all super proud of you Giselle! 💙

Giselle’s got a good excuse to be late for school this morning.

She’s just been awarded National Volunteer of the Year by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

At just 14, her advocacy is making a difference for people living with Type 1 Diabetes.

This morning I welcomed Giselle to Kirribilli House to say congratulations.

We are excited to announce THREE early to mid-career researchers (EMCRs) have been awarded the Tim Welborn EMCR Fellowship. This includes:

🔹 Dr Claire Jessup Flinders University, who is investigating how to delay or prevent T1D by targeting a type of immune cell known as a T-cell

🔹 Dr Irina Buckle from Mater Research Institute, The University of Queensland, who is looking at using an oral therapy in an effort to slow down or prevent T1D

🔹 Dr Rong Xu from Monash University who is working on a new formulation of insulin that could respond to rising blood sugar levels and more closely mimic the natural action of the pancreas

The Tim Welborn EMCR Fellowship is named after Professor Tim Welborn AO, a pioneering endocrinologist in Western Australia.

Big news for JDRF: After 20 incredible years of dedicated leadership, Mike Wilson OAM will be retiring from his role as CEO of JDRF Australia later this year.

Two decades of advocating for and alongside the type 1 diabetes (T1D) community has delivered transformational change. Check out this snapshot of just some of JDRF’s achievements for people with T1D under his leadership:

➡️ elevated T1D as a bipartisan policy priority at the Federal level, leading to substantial investment in the T1D Clinical Research Network and Insulin Pump Program
➡️ helped secure $273m in 2022 to support access to continuous glucose monitors for all Australians with T1D
➡️ launched a program of high-profile events and community programs available around Australia for people living with T1D, providing education, support and fundraising.

Mike’s passion and commitment have been unmatched, and we are forever grateful for his extraordinary contributions to improving lives and finding cures for T1D.

As we celebrate Mike's legacy, we are also excited to welcome Sydney Yovic as our new CEO. With deep roots in the T1D space and extensive international experience, Sydney is ready to continue our progress and will be starting with JDRF Australia in August. We look forward to the future with hope and determination. 💙
