UNSW People of Colour Collective

This is what climate injustice looks like. One-third of a country that contributes less than 1% of the global greenhouse gas emissions is now under water.

In light of the recent, unprecedented and catastrophic flooding in Pakistan, it is a humanitarian need for us to contribute and help those as much as we can. The disastrous floods have destroyed food supplies and wiped out farm land.

PAKSOCS from Sydney, USYD Muslims in Health society, Pakistan Youth Council of Australia, UTS Students for Humanity and UNSW MSA have decided to collaborate and start a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for those affected by the recent flooding in Pakistan through Human Appeal.

Pakistan has declared a NATIONAL Emergency. The United Nations and worldwide countries have begun humanitarian efforts. Let's play our role to help those in need by donating as much as possible, and sharing with those around us to maximise our impact.

Here are the current statistics regarding the floods:

Deaths:
At least 1,100 people including 380 children have unfortunately perished

Displaced:
Approximately 364,000 people and counting

People affected:
More than 50 million

Damaged area:
More than 1/3 of Pakistan

Damage costs:
At least USD 10 Billion

These numbers are rising daily and have no end in sight if proper action is not taken.

The aim of this fundraiser is to give these people hope that things will come back together and to provide them with the necessary resources they need to survive and build a new life.

Any word you can think of right now, will perfectly describe what last week's IWD Event was like. Keeping in mind, half of Sydney was under water and trains were nowhere to be found. The event was chaotic, different, dull at times, energetic at others, and just, everything was all over the place. It started off with half the speakers stuck at home due to flooding, kindly delivering their speeches on zoom. Later, as the face to face speakers delivered, the room filled with random participants who came in just for the free pizza. Soon enough, the energy of the room lifted as every girl in the room came to the front to share "what empowers them as women?". It was so wholesome and relaxed.

The whole event really did capture what women like us go through every single day. the great thing about it was that despite the bad week we all had, we were there together, working together, enjoying pizza together, and just vibing together. That was the most important and beautiful take-away from the event.

Hey everyone!

Some of you may know a new Ethnocultural officer was elected by the SRC last night, and I wanted to take the chance to introduce myself.

I’m Reid (He/Him), a Second Year Arts/Law student. Fun facts about me are that I can play Riptide on guitar, and that my family has both a dog and a cat.

I took on the role so that the Ethnocultural collective could be built into verifiable hub for all things diverse. The collective must be prolific, active and visible. This with the end of building a strong community, which can stand as a rallying point amplifying student of colour action and voices.

All active members and anyone who is interested in building this collective should comment below! A group chat will be made where we can be properly introduced and discuss next steps.

I look forward to seeing the future of Ethnocultural Collective!

If you are passionate about student advocacy, welfare and experience at UNSW, this is your chance to get involved to support students of colour at the UNSW Kensington campus.

Duties involve convening meetings, organising events and campaigns and reporting to the 2021 SRC Council, including sitting on and contributing to other committees and working groups to advocate for the welfare of students.

We hope that you are safe, masked up and isolating during this 2-week lockdown. We would like to remind you that if you are experiencing any symptoms of isolation, please reach out for support!

A number of resources that may be helpful to get through the next 2 weeks are:

1. Reach out to friends and family (Try and set up zoom calls, phone calls, gaming sessions, movie or online game catch-ups or cute virtual dinner ideas).

2. Set up a routine and stick to it! Be sure to get some movement, water and food in regularly and to loosen your muscles up to prevent that fatigue from settling in.

3. Check out Arc's Wellness Warriors (https://www.arc.unsw.edu.au/help/wellness/wellness-warriors) or Student Minds at UNSW to keep up with all things Mental Health and Support at UNSW.

4. Check out Arc Sport UNSW to see how you can have fun and get some stretching done!
