The pursuit of eternal youth has been a human endeavour for centuries. From ancient elixirs to modern anti-aging creams, we've always sought ways to defy the passage of time. But is aging truly a problem to be solved, or is it a natural part of life that can be embraced?

Surely the traditional notion of a fixed age at which "old age" begins is outdated. Instead, aging is a highly individual process, influenced by factors beyond chronological years.

Here are some tips to keep your body healthy, even without osteopathy:

** Daily Stretches: Maintain flexibility and joint mobility.
** Walking Power: Keep your circulation strong and muscles toned.
** Rest and Recharge: Give your body time to recover each day.
** Supportive Shoes: Trainers can reduce wear-and-tear on your knees and hips, and ease back pain on hard surfaces.

Pain relievers aren't the only answer for aging-related aches either. To truly find lasting relief, address the root cause of pain. That's where osteopathy comes in. We're trained to help you reclaim your body's potential!

If you are not feeling 'you' - why not contact Hills Osteopaths for a qualified consultation and discover how osteopathy may be able to help:

Concerned about osteopathy ? Below we answer FAQ aboout safety, side effects and recovery ...

Safety:
Osteopathy is a very safe and effective form of treatment and most patients feel substantially better for it. A Manipulation of a healthy spine is not at all dangerous as the joint is moved within its normal anatomical range of movement. Manipulation is never used on babies as their skeletons are not fully developed and elderly patients, who may be at risk of osteoporosis, undergo adjustments less frequently. The case history taken at your first consultation is essential for assessing anyone at risk. All treatment should be relatively painless. If your muscles are very inflamed or you are in acute pain we try to handle you as gently as possible.

Side Effects
Side effects are generally very rare. You might experience some tiredness/soreness for a few days afterwards but this will subside quickly. Osteopathy is a very safe and effective form of treatment and most patients feel substantially better for it.

Recovery
Your rate of recovery depends on several factors e.g. age, general health, daily activities, as well as the type of problem you have. Your particular situation will be discussed during your first consultation.
Usually several sessions are required to overcome a problem, as with most forms of medicine, osteopathy is not necessarily a cure.

Osteopathy treatment is beneficial for many more conditions than you may realise - and Hills Osteopaths are here to help.

If you are suffering from any health concern and unsure whether osteopathy is suitable, you have nothing to lose by making an appointment where you will have an informed consultation and wherever possible we will help get back on track with your everyday life.

Don't Let Your Phone Weigh You Down!

Ever feel a nagging pain in your neck after hunching over your phone? You're not alone! This common issue is called "text neck" and it's caused by poor posture while using smartphones.

Did you know your head weighs around 12 pounds? But tilt it forward like you're checking your phone, and that weight can strain your neck muscles to feel like you're carrying a hefty **8-year-old**! Yikes!

Text neck isn't just about a sore neck. This constant strain can lead to:

- Spine problems: Early wear and tear, degeneration, and even surgery in severe cases.
- Muscle strain: Texting for hours stretches tissues, leading to pain and inflammation.
- Pinched nerves & herniated discs: Ouch!
- Loss of natural spinal curve: Can lead to further complications.

It doesn't stop there - bad posture from phone use can also:

- Reduce lung capacity: Up to 30% less!
- Cause headaches and neurological issues: Ouch again!
- Contribute to depression and heart disease: Not good news.

Break the Text Neck Cycle!
- Look down with your eyes, not your neck.
- Hold your phone at eye level. Just like you would a computer!
- Stretch regularly. Simple head rolls can make a big difference.

If you are suffering from any form of neck pain, contact Hills Osteopaths for a qualified consultation

A 2022 survey conducted by Safe Work Australia and Deloitte Access Economics examined the costs of workplace injuries and illnesses in Australia. The study found that agricultural and lower-skilled workers had the highest rates of work-related injuries and illnesses, followed by officials and managers, and then clerks. According to Safe Work Australia's National Disability Support Scheme (NDS) claims, agricultural and lower-skilled workers accounted for nearly 40% of all claims

Back pain is unfortunately a common experience, affecting roughly four out of five people at some point in their lives. The lower back (lumbar region) and neck are the most frequent areas of discomfort. While the pain may be intense, in 90% of cases, it significantly improves or resolves within six weeks, often within a week. Although serious underlying causes are rare (affecting less than 5% of cases), back pain can still be quite debilitating

Preventing future back injuries requires becoming 'back aware.' This involves practicing proper lifting techniques (bending your knees, maintaining a slightly flexed back, and keeping the object close to your body) and ensuring a correct posture at your desk. Some individuals find Pilates or Alexander techniques helpful for improving posture and reducing the risk of back pain.

If you are struggling with pain, there are ways to manage it without medication.

Ever felt that sharp twinge in your shoulder after a workout or lifting something heavy? โ˜๏ธ

The shoulder joint is complex, and many factors can contribute to shoulder pain. In younger people, shoulder pain is often due to accidents or injuries. As we age, natural age-related changes in the shoulder joint and rotator cuff tendon can lead to persistent discomfort.

At Hills Osteopaths we can assess the area of pain and discuss activities and lifestyle factors that might be relevant to your condition. We can work with you to:
- Offer exercises for strengthening and recovery.
- Improve muscle flexibility in the shoulder area.
- Enhance the range of joint motion in the mid-back, neck, shoulder blade, and shoulder.
- Address postural strains and ergonomics.
- Provide advice on maintaining flexibility and strength around the shoulder region.
-Help you modify certain activities to reduce pain and prevent further injury.

At Hills Osteopaths, we believe in a whole-body approach to healthcare, which means looking at the bigger picture of your overall health and wellbeing, as well as guiding and supporting you to manage your pain based on what is best for you.

If you are struggling with pain, there are ways to manage it without medication.

โ€ข Enhanced Mindfulness:
Disconnecting from your phone forces you to fully engage with your environment. Youโ€™ll notice details you would usually overlook and foster a deeper connection to the present moment.
โ€ข Short Walks, Big Benefits:
Even brief silent walks provide stress relief, improved focus, and a mental reset.

The wrist โ€“ the joint between your hand and arm โ€“ contains eight bones called carpal bones that are arranged in two rows, these are connected to the bones of the palm. The carpal bones are connected by ligaments. Also many tendons connecting the forearm muscles to the fingers and thumb run through the wrist. Extensor tendons on the back of the wrist straighten your fingers, while flexor tendons on the front of the wrist bend them. Nerves and blood vessels also pass through the wrist. Together all of these structures work in a coordinated way to provide your wrist with exceptional range of motion - but when that motion is compromised by discomfort or injury, it can dramatically impair how you go about your day.

At Hills Osteopaths, we work with patients to manage their symptoms and improve their wrist or hand function, using a range of techniques tailored to their individual needs.
Whether you have initial symptoms or have been living with a condition for many years, we can provide treatment to reduce pain and slow down progression, allowing you to carry on your everyday life with minimal restriction and discomfort.

Weโ€™ve all heard it before: drastic life changes are hard to make and even harder to maintain. But when it comes to health and fitness, small, consistent steps can lead to big, long-lasting results. At Hills Osteopaths, we believe in the power of gradual progress. Letโ€™s explore some practical tips to help you incorporate exercise into your lifestyle and make it stick.

Consistency is Key
Research suggests that early morning workouts can be effective, but donโ€™t stress if youโ€™re a night owl. The key is finding a time that works for you and sticking to it.

The Gym ... and Alternatives
** Visit off-peak hours: Enjoy a quieter workout environment with less equipment competition.

Social and Mental Boost
** Group classes: Find motivation and support in a group setting.
** Music: Enhance your workout experience with the right tunes.
** Workout buddy: Share the journey with a friend
**Visualization: Mental rehearsal can improve performance and motivation.

Setting Goals and Overcoming Obstacles
** Walk and stand more: Incorporate movement into your workday.
** Race goals: Set a target event to stay motivated.

Remember, every step you take, no matter how small, brings you closer to your fitness goals. By making exercise a enjoyable and sustainable part of your life, youโ€™re investing in your long-term health and well-being.
