Get excited for BIOSOC’s Careers Event, which is happening tomorrow night - Thursday 25th July!
We have a wealth of fascinating presenters who will be speaking at the event, so be sure to come along with any career questions!

☆ Dr. Claire Brandenburger, a botanist and ecologist at the Australian Botanic Gardens, is passionate about plant conservation and ecology, with extensive research and community education experience promoting biodiversity and sustainability

☆ Kristine Faelner is currently a PhD. candidate in marine sciences, with a vast background in coastal ecology and restoration.

☆ Dr. Caitlyn Forster, an entomologist at the University of Sydney, recently completed a PhD. on bee behavioural ecology and currently researches how insects select flowers using behavioural economics.

☆ A/Professor Michael Kasumovic, a researcher at UNSW, specialises in evolutionary biology and educational technology. As the founder of Arludo, he innovates science education with interactive mobile games.

☆ Nicole Malinconico is a marine biologist with expertise in ocean and coastal management and is currently doing her PhD. at UNSW.

☆ Hayley Malouf, an animal scientist and zookeeper at Sydney Zoo, teaches animal science at TAFE NSW and works in wildlife conservation and animal welfare.

☆ Dr. Jasmin Martino, an aquatic ecologist, specialises in fish, cephalopods, and stable isotope ecology, developing novel tools for sustainable aquatic environment management.

☆ Xuemeng Mu, a PhD. candidate at UNSW in plant ecology, researches plant-soil interaction diversity and specificity.

☆ Dr. Melanie Zeppel, a manager at New Forests, uses machine learning to model soil and forest carbon, enhancing carbon sequestration and biodiversity. She is an advocate for women in STEM and has received accolades like the 2022 Women in AI: Agribusiness award.

Do you love researching and learning new things?
Want to work with a dedicated, passionate, and creative committee?

Apply to our Magazine Subcommittee today!

We are looking for keen students to be a part of our publishing team. This is a great way to gain casual research, design, and collaborative skills!

Roles on offer are:

1. Chief Researcher
- Assist the Chief Editors with researching and writing various sections of the magazine.
- Oversee magazine content with thorough fact-checking and accuracy checking.

2. Assistant Researcher
- Support the Chief Researcher by gathering information, sourcing images, and helping with content creation.

3. Website Specialist / IT Manager
- Oversee and manage the BIOSOC Website, particularly the Magazine Page.
- Fix any technical issues and ensure the website runs smoothly for user interface.

Come join us and UNSW Wandering Society for a bushwalk on the Malabar Headland Walking Track!🚶‍♀️🍃

We’ll walk, talk, and have lunch afterwards at Maroubra Cafes! 🥑 The track takes around 1-1.5 hours to complete with moderate walking level, making it an easy, relaxing walk. 🐧

We will be leaving as a group from the Cromwell Park Playground behind Malabar Beach at 10 am (see map for location & track route) ☀️ Don’t forget to bring warm walking clothes, water, and a camera to snap some whales! 🐋

UNSW BioSoc is proud to announce the launch of our very first magazine, titled ‘Wild Wonders’! Not only that, but we are also launching a website where you can read the magazine and do other cool stuff like purchase merchandise and read about the team (coming soon)! 🌸🌵

This time next week (Monday 1st July), the launch edition of Wild Wonders will be published along with the launch of the new website. Wild Wonders is a student-run magazine covering a wide range of topics in the biological and ecological sciences. We aim to intrigue, inform, and inspire you with the wonderful wilderness of our Earth. 🍃🦋

GET HYPED FOR OUR MEGA-COLLAB EVENT OF THE TERM, with our enviro-friends at GEOSOC & RESOC.

Due to the unfortunate wet weather last week, the event has now been moved to the 26th of June (Week 5 Wednesday) at 11am.

So pop over to the Alumni Lawn whenever you can, and join us some good old-fashioned fun. Where we will be playing childhood games such as; bullrush, three-legged race and many more!! There will also be FREE BBQ for all participant!

BIOSOC 🦈 is excited to announce the mega collab of the term! Along with our friends GEOSOC 🪨 and RESOC ⚡, we will be holding a Childhood Sports Day!

Don’t like sports? Don’t worry! We will be holding fun “sporting” events like three-legged race 🏃🏽, red light green light 🚦, tug-o-war 🪢 , bullrush 🐂 and MANY MORE!

We will also be giving FREE SAUSAGE SIZZLE🌭😋 to all participants! So wear your house colours (Red❤️ for RESOC’s Red Bolts, Green💚 for GEOSOC’s Green Geodes and Blue🩵 for BIOSOC’s Blue Sharks) and relive your childhood with us!

Come join us next week (Week 2) on Michael Birt Lawn (BEES Lawn, outside the Biosciences Building) on Thursday 22nd February from 1:30-3:30pm for our picnic!.

BELOVED BIOSOC MEMBERS!!! WE ARE ANNOUNCING OUR BIOSOC RETREAT WHERE YOU CAN COME ALONG TO SMITHS LAKE FIELD STATION TO END THE YEAR 📢🥳🥼🔭🔬

We have made an expression of interest form to see who’s excited to join us! 🤪🎊

At the moment we are estimating around 45 people at Smiths Lake ☀️🌸🌈🌻

Tickets are estimated to be around $50 for Arc members and $60 for non-Arc members

We have booked in for the 1-3rd of December, a great way to end the term 🥳
