What is a gastric bypass?

Gastric bypass, also known as Roux-en-Ygastric bypass, is a bariatric or weight loss surgery for obese patients who have not been successful losing weight through dieting, exercise and medication.

The surgery uses a combination of restrictive and malabsorptive techniques to achieve a successful outcome. Staples are used to create a smaller stomach to limit the amount of food intake, and a large portion of the small intestine is bypassed to limit the nutrients and calories absorbed.

The goal of the surgery is to make you feel full quicker so you don’t overeat, and absorb fewer calories by the modifications made in the small intestine.

Gastric bypass surgery has been shown to help reduce obesity and related illnesses, including heart disease, high blood pressure, and especially type 2 diabetes.

It can be performed laparoscopically through tiny incisions (minimally invasive technique) or through a large open incision (open technique).

What is sleeve gastrectomy?

Sleeve gastrectomy, also referred to as vertical sleeve, gastric sleeve or tube gastrectomy, is a surgical procedure performed for the treatment of obesity. This helps patients to eat less without hampering the normal digestive process.

This is the most popular surgical treatment in Australia now. It involves removing the outer portion of stomach and reducing its size.

Sometimes sleeve gastrectomy is carried out as a first stage of a 2-stage operation in extremely obese patients with a BMI of 60 or more. This is done to achieve a considerable amount of weight loss so it is safer for the patient to undergo a second bariatric surgery if needed.

Ingredients

1 teaspoon olive oil
1 small onion, chopped
1 clove of garlic, minced
1 red capsicum, thinly sliced
2 cups mushroom, sliced
2 zucchini, thinly sliced
1 eggplant, cubed
1 cup tomato, chopped
1 cup chickpeas (tinned, no added salt)

Method

Mix all ingredients into a a large pot. Cover and cook 15 minutes or until vegetables are soft.

Cottage and Ricotta cheese are the lowest in fat and calories, and this is mainly because they have more fluid compared to a hard cheese.

Cheese is high in calcium, protein and other vitamins, but is also high in saturated fat which is not good for your cholesterol.

Meet Dr Das

Dr Amitabha Das is a highly experienced upper gastrointestinal and weight loss surgeon that has been performing complex laparoscopic (“keyhole”) surgery since 2007.

Dr Das routinely performs some of the most technically demanding gastrointestinal surgical cases an upper-GI surgeon will ever face in their career, such as major cancer resections of the stomach, liver and pancreas. He has deep foundational surgical skills developed performing these more technically demanding areas of laparoscopic surgery, which he applies to his bariatric surgical work, such as the gastric sleeve and the gastric bypass.

Dr Das holds both public and private hospital appointments and can cater to all patients. He performs routine surgery as some of South-West Sydney’s highest volume public hospitals.

Dr Das also teaches other surgeons advanced techniques in upper-GI surgery.

Sometimes it can be hard to eat the right things, or it feels overwhelming to come up with new ideas. Here is a lovely Frozen yoghurt bark recipe that the whole family will enjoy and its so easy to put together.⁠

Mix up the fruit and nuts, depending on what you have in the house!⁠

INGREDIENTS (serves one)⁠
⁠
1/2 cup plain 2-percent-fat Greek yogurt⁠
1 teaspoon honey⁠
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract⁠
1/4 cup blueberries (fresh or frozen)⁠
1 tablespoon unsweetened shredded coconut⁠
5 almonds, roughly chopped⁠
⁠
DIRECTIONS⁠
Line a shallow, freezer-safe airtight container with parchment paper.⁠
In a bowl, stir together yogurt, honey, and vanilla extract. Spread over parchment paper in container in a thin, even layer. Top with blueberries, coconut, and almonds.⁠

Cover and freeze until solid.⁠
Break into pieces. Store in the freezer until ready to eat.⁠
