As we approach the end of Reconciliation Week, It was great to host our Aboriginal Community at school and share afternoon tea on Wednesday.
We want to end the week by sharing an artwork completed by some of our Aboriginal students, "One Mob".
This artwork was created over the span of an 11-week program. The Deadly Dreaming program aims to reconnect kids with their Indigenous culture by facilitating contemporary Aboriginal art programs, Traditional Aboriginal dance programs, history of Indigenous people. It also aims to educate young people on their physical & mental health as well as providing information on the effects of drugs and alcohol.
This artwork is called ‘One Mob’.
The artwork tells the story of mob from all different walks of life and all different parts of Australia, coming together to share culture. In the centre of the artwork, we have the symbol that represents a meeting place, and surrounding it we have the symbols for men and women. The students wanted to depict the landscape of Australia, and represent Mother Earth and Father Sky. They have done this by painting the sunset with symbols for stars, which touches on Aboriginal people being the first astrologers. The stars serve as calendars, a law book and inform all aspects of daily life. They have also painted the river (representative of the local Nepean River) along with some totems, symbols for waterways and white dots to represent the flow of the water. The tree represents the connection to mother earth. Much like the roots of a tree, it indicated the deep connection that Aboriginal people have with the land.
The collaborative artists are as follows:
Lillian, Karalee, Katelyn, Myah, Temiah, Tyreace, Violet, Nagari, Caleb, Alex and Drake.
*Indigenous peoples’ rights to Indigenous Cultural Intellectual Property (ICIP) are enshrined in article 31 of the United declaration on the rights of Indigenous Peoples.
