Uncommon Sense, Common Nonsense. Cohort 8 of the Global Executive MBA are at NAB in London. Dr Jules Goddard of London Business School argues that the application of uncommon sense - thinking or acting differently from other organisations in a way that makes unusual sense - is the secret to competitive success.

This week our students are based at Cambridge University's Judge Business School, working with NAB on strategic issues, exploring disruptive technologies, fintechs and resultant new business models.

The Royal Commission into Misconduct in the Banking, Superannuation and Financial Services Industry once again highlights how susceptible our large institutions can be to ethical failures of leadership.

Today cohort 9 of the Global Executive MBA heard from Dennis Gentilin, founder of Human Systems Advisory and author of 'The Origins of Ethical Failures: Lessons for Leaders'.

He contends that:
- unethical behaviour can occur, despite the presence of robust governance and compliance frameworks
- explanations for unethical behaviour are not straightforward – reasons for unethical conduct are multi-layered and complex
- we are all susceptible to unethical conduct, regardless of how scrupulous our characters may be, and
- leaders play a central role in developing cultures that are more resistant to ethical failures, and cultures that are better equipped to deal with the fall out of unethical behaviour when it occurs.

For the past 2 weeks Cohort 9 of the Global Executive MBA have used the beef industry as a vehicle for learning about how to manage a connected enterprise. They've tackled pressing strategic issues for one of Australia's largest beef producers - and they've done so on the ground, not just in the classroom. Quite literally from the paddock to the plate, exposure to the entire supply chain has focused their learning. All while having a truly unique and memorable experience.

Congratulations to Steve Jurkovich (EMBA cohort 1) on his appointment to the top job at Kiwibank in New Zealand. A truly fabulous achievement.

Navigating through uncertainty, ambiguity and complexity requires a new approach to leadership - one rooted in self awareness. Our students are prepared to be challenged. They expect to be placed in uncomfortable situations, all over the world, in order to learn, and to grow.

What does Glassblowing have to do with leadership?

When you're under pressure, the situation is complex and time is critical, the difference between success and failure can be how effectively you work and communicate with others, using both verbal and non-verbal communication skills.

Leadership skills, like Glassblowing, require ongoing practice to master.

This week cohort 9 of the Global Executive MBA have embarked upon their leadership development journey. The next 18 months will take them from Sydney to Bangalore, California to the UK and on to Israel.

The first unit - Reframing Leadership - focuses on the individual, exploring leadership from a variety of perspectives. Through art, philosophy, media and sense-making, our experiential approach asks students to step out of their comfort zone - to extend themselves in order to learn, and to grow.

Today the cohort welcomes slam poet Luka Lesson. With kindness and creativity, Luka guides the cohort to write and perform their own slam poetry.

Today cohort 8 of our Global Executive MBA are visiting Netflix, Cisco, Barefoot Networks and the Tesla Factory in Silicon Valley, California.

How did Netflix conquer the world using data analysis to drive decision making? What is Cisco doing to further connect our physical world via the Internet of Things (IoT). What lessons have Tesla learned about disrupting an existing market?

Most importantly, what insights can our students derive that can benefit their own organisations, their industries and their communities?

Our Global Executive MBA students are about to tackle a major project for Cisco in California. From UCLA to Silicon Valley, the Global Executive MBA will give you exposure to the latest thinking and the most innovative disruptors. We'll work to challenge and enhance your leadership capabilities at every turn.

January 2018 - EMBA6005: Finding Opportunity in Disruptive Technology

In this module we head to California, the home of both tech start-ups and well-established tech giants, to examine how technology creates new companies and changes existing businesses. We'll visit Netflix, Tesla, Disney, Google, Cisco, Uber and hear from many organisations that have harnessed technology to develop new business models.

We'll meet with entrepreneurs and academics who study entrepreneurial activity and develop skills to identify opportunities for expansion, harness strategic resources, improve corporate decision-making and avoid the potential pitfalls of growth.

I am like a lot of people who have achieved a great deal in my career but find myself at a turning point. How do you make sense of what you've accomplished and what you want to do next? How does your history shape your future? Are you bound by it or can you do something completely different? What sustains you? What gets you out of bed every morning? What's holding you back from making a move?

We are a week out from our Metamorphosis program in Tasmania. This program is designed to help you make the transition from one phase of your career to the next. We still have a couple of places left, so get in contact and hear about what we will do.
