Are you passionate about treating health anxiety? The Healthy Brain Ageing Clinic want to hear from you!
The Healthy Brain Ageing (HBA) Research Clinic in Camperdown, NSW, specialises in comprehensive cognitive assessments for older adults. Our expert team, consisting of geriatricians, clinical neuropsychologists, and researchers, is dedicated to identifying cognitive issues early on. This is a free service offered as part of our research.
In our clinic, we encounter many older adults who are particularly anxious about their memory and thinking skills despite receiving positive feedback that their cognitive test scores are normal. This anxiety can stem from several different factors, including a family history of dementia.
We are seeking clinical psychologists interested in treating health anxiety who would like to receive referrals from our clinic.

CLINICAL FOCUS WEBINAR
EMOTIONAL LABOUR - 9th AUGUST 2024
"Caution - burnout ahead? Emotional labour and burnout in the provision of mental health care"
Anthony Joffe, Black Dog Institute
About the 2024 seminars: The Anxiety Practitioners Network is pleased to bring you the 2024 series of Clinical Focus Seminars aimed at providing clinicians and clinical students with up-to-date information relating to different fields of anxiety and related disorders. These seminars will be run by clinicians and clinical researchers who are experts in their respective fields.
About this seminar: As service workers, mental health clinicians may be required to engage in emotional labour to ensure the emotions they express at work are appropriate. This may involve amplifying certain emotions and/or shielding other emotions from public view. However, understanding how psychologists engage in emotional labour (and what effects this might contribute to) is a relatively new area of research. This seminar provides a broad overview of emotional labour, answering questions including:
What is emotional labour and how does it manifest in psychotherapy? How might it relate to clinician burnout and wellbeing? Can clinicians manage their emotions sustainably? This seminar will also provide some general information on identifying and managing early signs of burnout, and in doing so, aims to
equip you with practical knowledge you can use throughout your career span. This will be an interactive seminar that involves learning, reflection, and sharing (if comfortable).
About the presenter: Anthony is a clinical psychology registrar and postdoctoral research fellow at the Black Dog Institute. His PhD research examined a) how psychologists experience emotional labour when providing psychotherapy, b) how emotional labour relates to various aspects of wellbeing, and c) the impact of emotional labour on the therapeutic relationship. His clinical work centres on the prevention and treatment of burnout among medical and allied health professionals.

APN CLINICAL CASE NIGHT - EMDR with a young person
Tues 28th May, 7-9pm
“Stop! I don’t want to think or talk about it!” – Using EMDR to work through trauma with a young person
Presenter: Marlene Chong, Clinical Psychologist
Making Connections Psychology
About this topic: What happens when you’ve been seeing a client for a while for their presenting issues, and they unexpectedly experience a significant trauma? What happens then when you think you might have the solution as the clinician, and the client refuses to let you get anywhere close to what they feel as it is too threatening for them? In this case presentation, we will go through a brief background and introduction to EMDR, and its application with a young person. We will also consider the possible impact (or not) of the trauma on the client’s complex presentation. This case presentation will also address a clinician’s struggles and approach in engaging an emotionally avoidant young person who has experienced a trauma and the impact of the trauma on the individual and her family.
About the presenter: Marlene Chong is a clinical psychologist with Making Connections Psychology in St Peters. She completed her Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) at the University of Queensland, and her Masters in Clinical Psychology at Macquarie University. Marlene’s masters research topic looked at autobiographical memory in trauma within an undergraduate population. Clinically, Marlene’s experience lies predominantly within the Child and Family area, having worked in Singapore within the child protection and juvenile justice systems, conducting research with rural families looking at factors in conduct disorder, working with a large migrant population in a Child and Youth Mental Health Service, and an early intervention service for families whose children have been exposed to neglect and/or abuse and at risk of harm. Marlene uses a myriad of approaches in her treatment, such as cognitive behavioural therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, attachment-based therapy, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) and mindfulness-based strategies. Marlene is a certified Circle of Security Parenting (COS-P) practitioner, a foundational Theraplay practitioner, and is Phase I certified in the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics (NMT). As a therapist, Marlene works within the attachment framework and believes that connections and relationships are key components in helping families and individuals overcome their difficulties. Marlene currently works with individuals across the lifespan in private practice and has always been curious about the impact of developmental trauma on client presentations, regardless of age.

SCHEMA THERAPY WITH DREAMS AND NIGHTMARES.
Workshop in Sydney
Recurring nightmares are a common occurrence with sufferers of PTSD and complex trauma and are strongly linked with suicidality. Current treatments using imagery rehearsal have been shown to be effective in reducing trauma induced nightmares and improving sleep.
Traditionally dreams have been approached from a psychoanalytic perspective while other psychological models consider dream analysis unnecessary. Recent studies into dreams indicate they could play a significant role in memory consolidation. Schema Therapy aims to access the negative schemas formed early in life and change them through limited reparenting. Nowadays there are a number of creative ways to work with schemas and modes and utilising client’s dreams is increasingly becoming part of a schema therapist’s repertoire.
Many schemas are formed in the first three years and as such are difficult to access through eliciting memories. This workshop will demonstrate how dreams can provide a means to connect with the young vulnerable child mode.
The workshop is designed for therapists currently working with schema therapy who are looking to increase their repertoire. Demonstrations will be included as well as provide opportunities to practice working with dreams and nightmares.
Date: April 5th, 2024
Venue: Quest, Sydney Olympic Park

2024 CLINICAL FOCUS WEBINAR – ECO ANXIETY
There are still space for this webinar, on 1st March, 10am to 1pm AEST
Eco Anxiety in an Era of Global Boiling:
How might ACT help us to respond effectively to eco emotions
Presented by Dr Louise Shepherd, Clinical Psychologist.
About this webinar: Climate change is arguably the biggest challenge our world currently faces. Following the hottest European summer in over 100,000 years, the UN Secretary General recently used the term “Global Boiling” to emphasise the seriousness of the emergency. Gradually people are waking up to this threat and facing some distressing emotions that are increasingly hard to hide from. The term eco anxiety is commonly used but that is merely one of many distressing emotions to consider. Anxiety in this context might be very rational and understandable, yet we want to respond effectively. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) offers a range of tools to help ourselves and our clients to navigate these complex emotions skilfully.
This interactive online workshop is aimed at honing existing ACT skills to deal with the wide range of eco emotions using a mix of practical tools and experiential exercises. Louise will share some general observations about the impact the climate emergency is having on our mental health and provide an opportunity for attendees to reflect on how their own eco emotions show up at home and work. Developing personal psychological flexibility relating to eco emotions will be discussed as well as steps towards becoming more empowered and skilful in sitting with our clients.
We will discuss the dilemmas a therapist might face, e.g., speaking about the science, making room for different values clients may hold and using personal disclosure wisely.
About the presenter: Louise Shepherd is a clinical psychologist with 25 years’ experience with individuals and groups in a variety of settings. Her clinical training was based in traditional CBT with a strong background in treating anxiety and mood disorders. For the last 15 years she has predominantly used Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and in 2012 she set up The Sydney ACT Centre which she ran until 2023. Since 2014 she has also worked part time as an executive coach, working with individuals and teams. She has trained extensively in ACT both here and overseas.
She is recognized as an Association for Contextual Behavioral Science (ACBS) Peer Reviewed ACT Trainer and member of the international ACT Training Community. In 2023, following a break from clinical practice Louise decided to pivot in a new direction, focusing on behavioural change work for the planet. She now works part time for an independent federal MP leading a project to decarbonize an urban electorate and is writing a book on imperfect climate action without the shame and blame using her clinical knowledge and personal experiences.

Professional Development: OCD Workshop and Group Supervision
In 2024, Dr Danielle Einstein and Professor Jessica Grisham will be offering a two-part online workshop on advanced behavioural and cognitive strategies for the treatment of OCD in adolescents and adults, followed by 5 scheduled online group supervision sessions. This is open to AHPRA registered psychologists and psychiatrists. It will cover fine-tuning and applying innovative treatment approaches to OCD in order to optimise engagement and
overcome therapeutic obstacles, as well as some support throughout the year in thinking through clinical challenges.
As an advanced workshop, there will be an initial review of the basics, but the workshop will quickly progress to more advanced skills. The program aims to be pragmatic and raise the level of therapeutic expertise in applying advanced skills. Attendees must have background training in cognitive behavioural principles and be currently working with OCD clients.
Please note knowledge of basic OCD assessment and CBT treatment are pre-requisites. The two-part workshop will be followed by a series of 5 scheduled group supervision sessions to
consolidate your skills and support you in applying them with your own clients.

2023 CLINICAL FOCUS WEBINAR
Perfectionism: An Integrated Conceptual Model
Eileen Seah
Clinical Psychologist
About this webinar: Perfectionism can be a difficult issue in therapy, both in terms of its intransigence and its effect on the treatment process; and exacerbated by how perfectionism has been shown in
research to be increasing over time. It is now generally agreed upon by researchers and clinicians thatperfectionism is a multidimensional construct—posited as a transdiagnostic process underlying many disorders. In this webinar, Eileen will present an integrated conceptual model focused on signature features/expressions of multidimensional perfectionism. The model is drawn from several theoretical models of perfectionism and therapeutic modalities, as well as informed by her own clinical practice. The webinar aims to offer a more integrated approach for practitioners to bridge different therapeutic approaches; to formulate and customise treatment to their client’s context and presentation.
About the presenter: Eileen Seah is a clinical psychologist with extensive experience in the treatment of anxiety and perfectionism. She is a PhD candidate at the University of Sydney investigating
multidimensional perfectionism and the self, namely self-criticism, self-compassion and self-concept clarity. She applies an integrated approach in her clinical work by drawing from several therapeutic
modalities such as cognitive behavioural therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, schema therapy, compassion-focused therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, and EMDR, amongst others. She has worked in diverse therapy settings such as Macquarie University’s Centre for Emotional Health, counselling
services at several universities, outpatient and inpatient hospital units, and in private practice. Eileen provides supervision to practitioners working with adult clients whose lives are negatively impacted by unrelenting standards and maladaptive perfectionism, as well as other clinical and professional issues.

APN CLINICAL FOCUS SEMINAR
Friday July 28th 2023
10am - 1pm
‘From Prohibition to Prescription: The Role of Cannabinoids in Sleep and Anxiety’
Presenter:
Dr Anastasia Suraev
Research Fellow, University of Sydney
---
About this seminar: Sleep is a fundamental physiological process often described as a ‘vital sign’ or a signal of one’s general physical and mental health. It holds a bi-directional relationship with anxiety (and other mental health conditions) such that sleep difficulties may be both a cause and consequence of anxiety. While behavioural interventions such as CBT are the mainstay of treatment, people often seek short-term strategies to maintain normal daytime function. These often include prescription sleep aids and/or alternative treatments such as medicinal cannabis.
Anxiety and sleep disorders are the second and third most common indications for a prescription for medicinal cannabis in Australia. But are cannabinoids an effective treatment for sleep and anxiety? In this seminar, Anastasia will share the science behind cannabinoids and an overview of recent research, as well as use case presentations to highlight how different cannabinoids are being used to treat anxiety and sleep disorders. Anastasia will also share new data on medicinal cannabis prescribing trends for psychiatry-related conditions in Australia.
About the presenter: About the presenter: Dr Anastasia Suraev is a Research Fellow at the University of Sydney where her research focuses on the clinical applications of cannabinoid-based therapies, with a focus on sleep disorders. Anastasia completed her Master of Clinical Neuropsychology at the University of Melbourne in 2015 before embarking on her PhD at the University of Sydney in 2018. Her PhD thesis examined the effects of cannabinoids on sleep and daytime function in insomnia disorder. Anastasia is passionate about science communication and has appeared in several major news outlets such as The New York Times. She has also spoken on the therapeutic and regulatory aspects of medicinal cannabis at various academic and industry events across Australia and internationally.
