Our team of speech pathologists at The Disability Trust are committed to recognising the communication strengths of people and supporting them in communicating in their own way. We wanted to share how Jacob communicates with support from Speech Pathologist Kate Bruton to celebrate Speech Pathology Week on its last day.
Jacob is a Shoalhaven resident who is in Year 12 at school. He uses a variety of communication modes to interact and communicate with his family, peers, teachers and his broad support network. One of Jacob’s preferred communication modes is the use of an alphabet board. He uses this alongside some spoken words and picture communication symbols.
Jacob uses these types of communication modalities to engage other people in fun interactions, to share information and to let people know how he is feeling, what he needs, and what his interests and hobbies are. Jacob recently shared his feelings towards his new house, which he described as a “happy house.”
Kate says, "As communication partners, we must acknowledge and respect a person’s preferred modes of communication. For Jacob and all people, we need to allow the time and opportunity for them to communicate in their way and to be truly heard by others."
Let’s continue to celebrate and support the unique ways everyone communicates!
The Wollongong Roller Hawks and the Illawarra Hawks Basketball recently went head-to-head in wheelchair basketball as part of the KidsWish Charity Match, raising over $5,000 for KidsWish.

Our Next Step (SLES) participants volunteered in customer service roles, including taking food orders and assisting with event set-up and pack-down.
It was a collaborative event by everyone involved, showcasing the importance of inclusivity to the local community.
