Our Story
Welcome in a world of fun & passion. 28 is a brand with historical roots back to 1842. It is part of the Belgium historical beer heritage. At that time, beers used to be brewed locally, in small batches and only with natural ingredients. Beers were lot less sugary and lot more tasty than what industrial beers are today. That was the time when Perl 28 has been created by Caulier. The apocryphal tale goes like this: as beers above 28 gr of malt per litre were paying higher taxes, 28decided to pay the tax and design beers with intense tastes. The 28 was borne.
In 2008, in Brussels, Belgium, out of job and slightly disaffected beer lunatic, weary of the lack of taste and high sugar content of industrial beers, I set up to seek the graal of a delicious craft low carb beer. I wanted extra taste and booze without the boot. It took us four years to eventually find what I was looking for: A unique natural process to brew low carb beers with a unique intense taste.
In 2012, I opened a new chapter in the long history of superlative craft beers and made a unique vow: “I would brew locally low carb craft beers and sell them within 28 weeks of bottling through 28 gastro pubs and deliver cases in a 28 minutes radius. So my guests may enjoy fresh craft beer at peak flavor. I would only use the finest, most delicious natural ingredients”. In the honor of the iconic Perl 28, I used the 28 logo for our top geeks beers and gastro pubs. At the time, the craft beer community was laughing, not believing a low carb craft beer had any future.
Now, four years later, and thanks to the enthusiastic support of many loyal guests and partners, Caulier has double size every year the last three years and sells over 13 000 HTL. More than ever, we are united by a simple purpose of getting great fresh low carb craft beers to everyone who ask for it. We have gotten even more specific about freshness and peak flavor. We want to set up production capacity of maximum 28 000 HTL in each of our strategic markets. We have a brewery in Fidenza, Italy and are planning to open two new breweries in Belgium and Mexico within three years.
