Tianjin University comes to visit
Today, Group T campus welcomed a delegation from Tianjin University's School of Microelectronics. TJU is not only the oldest university in China but also among the top ten. In recent years, TJU has already sent 36 engineering students to Leuven as part of its 2+2 double degree bachelor's programme. Most of them also followed a master's programme in Engineering Technology in Leuven. The delegation led by Vice-Dean Leiming Cheng was received by Professor Toon van Waterschoot, the new Campus Chair and Wim Polet, Director of the International Office. The agenda included a visit to the campus, talks with students and discussions on further cooperation.
Meet Tubi: student ambassador at KU Leuven Group T Campus:
Hey there! I'm a Bachelor of Engineering Technology student at KU Leuven. I've always been interested in programming since my childhood, so I have chosen Electronics and ICT Engineering in my second year as a specialization. I've been playing handball for ten years and, since KU Leuven provides a lot of sports opportunities, I was able to join the university's handball team and sustain my sports career. Furthermore, since Leuven has a huge social environment, I have the opportunity to join or make private parties and play music as a DJ. Feel free to ask questions about the school, my studies, student life, or anything else.

Warm welcome to our new internationals
There are still two weeks to go before the official start of the academic year. But the new international engineering students at Group T Campus are already ready for it. Today, they were welcomed to the introduction programme. This is a mix of classes, meet & greet moments, guided tours in and around Leuven, animation by the student association Industria including a visit to the Leuven fair. The first day consisted of a general information session, a Living in Leuven event and, to conclude, a welcome drink at the International Community Centre Pangaea KU Leuven. For a while it was feared that the auditorium on campus would be too small. With 280 newcomers, practically no seats remained unoccupied.

First Belgian self-driving racing car makes successful debut in Germany
Nothing but happy faces among the students of the Formula Electric Belgiumm team last Saturday at the closing ceremony of the Formula Student Germany Competition at the Hockenheim Circuit. With their brand new self-driving racing car, they finished in a very creditable 42nd place out of a total of 79 teams from all over the world. Our team was particularly proud of its performance during the Autocross, which was a first, because never before has a Belgian team completed a Dynamic Driverless event. The COMET race car also proved itself in the static competition events such as Business Plan (53rd place), Cost (31st place) and Engineering Design (13th place out of 25). With the competition in Germany, the Belgian team concludes a successful season. In Leuven, a new team of engineering students is already ready to take up the torch and ensure a decisive breakthrough in 2025.

Special Award for Formula Electric Belgium team in the Czech Republic
In the Driverless Vehicles Cup of the Formula Student Czech Republic last week, students from KU Leuven and Thomas More-hogeschool won a Special Award with their new self-driving racing car. This recognition was awarded due to their impressive response following a crash during the Driverless Emergency Brake Test. In the Driverless category, the team achieved a creditable sixth place out of 12 participants. In the overall Electric Vehicles category, they also finished in the middle of the pack (24th out of 46 participants), with standout performances in Acceleration (11th place), Cost & Manufacturing (16th place), and Engineering (18th place). Although things briefly threatened to go wrong when the driverless COMET ended up in the fence, the team was able to limit the damage and continue the race. This week, they will compete in Formula Student Germany at the Hockenheim circuit, the largest competition for electric and driverless vehicles worldwide.
Congrats to our Robots-Assisted Surgery Team! We are excited and proud that Ayoob Davoodi, Ruixuan Li and Kaat Van Assche from the RAS team led by Professor Emmanuel Vander Poorten have been selected for the final of the Innovation Award 2025 of KUKA, one of the world's leading specialists in automation. The Innovation Award 2025 is aimed both at the interaction of robotic systems with humans in the medical environment and at robots as part of future medical applications.
Our researchers' project combines an AI and Ultrasound-Based system with two robotic configurations to improve surgical precision. It reduces registration errors and accounts for physiological movements to ultimately enhance surgical outcomes.
For one year, the RAS team will be provided with a Med7 robot from KUKA to evaluate their ideas and prepare their presentation at the finals in 2025.

TMC-COMET, the first Belgian self-driving electric race car built by the students of the Formula Electric Belgium Team has passed the first trial by fire of the racing season this summer. During the Formula Student Netherlands Competition in Assen (13 to 18 July), the team competed in five of the seven tests and finished in 16th place (out of 32 ) thanks to a strong performance in Engineering Design, Cost & Manufacturing and Acceleration & Efficiency events. "It was a useful test for our new car," says Business relations manager and production engineer Rob Ulenaers. "We gained a lot of useful experience and insights for the next races." In the week of 5 August, the team will be at Formula Student Czech Republic at the Audrodome in Most. A week later, they will be at the Hockenheim circuit during Formula Student Germany
Dutch-Belgian student team wins European Seeds for the Future Programme
Sascha Koh (TU Delft), Joris Köster(U Twente), A***n Sharma (VU Amsterdam), Friso Smedes (U Groningen) and Tiësto 'T Jolle (KU Leuven-Group T Campus) participated as team in Huawei Seeds For The Future programme in Rome in early July. Together with 150 students from 23 countries, they attended a week of presentations, seminars and discussions by tech experts on hot issues such as diversity, sustainability, energy transition, climate, digitalisation, etc. During the final day, the teams had to pitch a concept of a new company with a 'Tech for Good' focus. The BioBuddy team turned out with a proposal that involves collecting cow dung in India and then converting it into energy and fertiliser. In January 2025, the finals of Seeds for the Future will take place at Huawei's headquarters in the southern Chinese city of Shenzen. There, the winning teams from all continents will compete for the international title. We wish the BioBuddy team the best of luck.
Final preparations before departure for South Africa
During the weekend of 21 July, the engineering students of the Innoptus Solar Team trained one last time on Belgian soil. This took place on the grounds of the military base in Beauvechain. The team members practised intensively on internal communication, overtaking manoeuvres, starting and stopping procedures, tyre changes, ... each time paying special attention to safety. Meanwhile, the Infinite solar car is packed and ready to leave for South Africa at Brussels Airport. The Sasol Solar Challenge will take place there from 13 to 21 September. Student teams from all over the world will take up the challenge to cover as much distance as possible on solar energy in eight days. Because the course runs over mountain passes and through deserts and crowded cities, this Solar Challenge is considered the most extreme in the world. For the KU Leuven students, it is the second time they have participated in this competition. The first time, they finished a close second. This year, the reigning world champions are aiming for nothing less than first place.
