📢Lecture: “Making and Valuing Reproducible Metalwork in the Early Modern Low Countries”📢

Reproducible metalwork like medals, plaquettes, roundels, and statuettes circulated widely from the late fifteenth century onward. While produced in multiples, these small-scale objects—cast in lead, bronze, copper, or even silver and gold—were valuable personal objects of daily life. In comparison to the unique carvings of sculptors such as Conrat Meit or Lucas Faydherbe, these small, replicable images have been overlooked in recent studies of Netherlandish sculpture.

During this lecture Elizabeth Rice Mattison, the Andrew W. Mellon Curator of Academic Programming and Curator of European Art at the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College, will explore their roles and meanings in the early modern Low Countries.

This Food for Thought lecture is a collaboration between Illuminare and , the centre for medieval sculpture at .leuven.

🆕Published: "Inner Affinity. Ovid, Titian, Philip of Spain"🆕

“Inner Affinity. Ovid, Titian, Philip of Spain” by Jean-François Corpataux, the 23rd publication in the Studies in Iconology, is out now.

The title of this little book is inspired by Erwin Panofsky’s remarks on the “inner affinity” between Ovid and Titian. But this inner affinity between the Latin poet and the Venetian painter also extends to Philip of Spain, for whom Titian painted the famous cycle of canvases that he referred to in his letters as the “Poesie”. To explore this kinship of spirit among the poet, the painter, and the king, this study examines the dynastic fecundity that results from the effects of works of art on the imagination, the soul and the body.

📢Lecture: "Rebuilding for Observance: Architectural changes to Santa Maria di Monteluce in Perugia"📢

On Wednesday 26 January, Julie Beckers, Postdoctoral Fellow at Illuminare, will deliver the lecture ‘Rebuilding for Observance: Architectural changes to Santa Maria di Monteluce in Perugia post Reform, c. 1448-1485’ at the WoArch 2024 symposium in Rome.

For almost 30 years, the literature investigating women and the built environment before the modern era has focused on women’s patronage of architecture. This symposium is designed to open a discussion about what is missing from this conversation yet can be found in the historical record: the roles that women of various social classes played in shaping architecture, landscapes, and cities in diverse parts of the world and the cultural and political implications of their activities.

WoArch 2024 is a symposium organized by the University of Arkansas Rome Center in collaboration with the School of Architecture + Planning at the University of Texas at San Antonio. It is supported by the Women in Architecture Affiliate Group of the Society of Architectural Historians.

WoArch is hosted in person at the Palazzo Taverna, Rome, and will be live-streamed on the Rome Center YouTube channels.

In February-March 2024 Barbara Baert is invited professor by Stéphane Toussaint at the Centre André Chastel of the Université de Sorbonne in Paris. As Professeur Invitée Barbara Baert will share and test the reading of ‘corners’ in the perspective of Filippino Lippi’s work with the students and colleagues. She will further explore the different methodological angles launched here and she will look for other iconological contexts where 'corners' and 'lever(ages)' play a visual-semantic role.

Julie Beckers, Postdoctoraal Fellow bij Illuminare, bezocht voor Klara de recent geopende tentoonstelling “Fabeldieren” in Louvre-Lens.

Bij Greet Samyn vertelde ze over sfinxen, eenhoorns of feniksen, wezens die tot de verbeelding blijven spreken. In het museum net over de grens met Frankrijk spelen deze fantasiedieren de hoofdrol. Kunstwerken van de Oudheid tot vandaag vertellen alles over hun legendes, krachten en leefomgeving.

📢10th Annual Ards Conference: "Beyond the Alps."📢

The 10th Annual ARDS. colloquium, which promotes and celebrates new research in the field of medieval and Renaissance sculpture, will focus on the interaction and interplay between the Low Countries and Italy in medieval and Renaissance sculpture. The conference will take place in Rome, at the Academia Belgica and the Royal Netherlands Institute Rome (KNIR) from 7 November until 9 November 2023.

Max Wiringa, Affiliated Researcher at Illuminare, will deliver a lecture at the conference, entitled “Giambologna and Della Porta”. Before settling in Florence, Giambologna is known to have spent two years in Rome in the early 1550s. Based on a possible friendship between the two sculptors inferred from one of Guglielmo Della Porta’s later letters, it has been hypothesised that Giambologna studied under Della Porta in the Eternal City. So far, this thesis has lacked convincing evidence. Wiringa’s study aims to strengthen the argument based on his master, Jacques Dubroeucq’s, network, and the analysis of Giambologna’s work.

Toen Filips de Stoute over het hertogdom Bourgondië heerste, groeide de streek uit tot een culturele goudmijn met een glanzende reputatie. Aan het hof van Filips werkten grote namen uit de kunstwereld. Claus Sluter, bijvoorbeeld, bekend van de Mozesput en het praalgraf van de hertog, maar ook zijn neef, leerling en opvolger Claux de Werve, een pak minder bekend. Hoe komt het dat Claux de Werve nooit ontsnapt is aan de schaduw van zijn oom?

Conservator oude kunst Jip van Reijen (Bonnefanten, Maastricht) gaat op zoek naar antwoorden en belicht het oeuvre van Claux de Werve in relatie tot de bourgondische beeldhouwkunst uit de eerste helft van de vijftiende eeuw.

📢Call for Papers: “XXIII Symposium for the Study of Underdrawing and Technology in Painting”📢

The Symposium will provide a scientific forum for the presentation of new technical studies in art history, concentrating on art from the Middle Ages and Early Modern period (1400-1600). The conference will focus on the technical examination of art in a variety of media and supports: panel paintings, painting on parchment and canvas, drawings, cartoons, sketches, model- and sketchbooks, prints and manuscript illuminations.

The main theme will be cross-media perspectives in the context of artistic materials, working methods, and the dissemination of concepts. Similarities in design might indicate cultural, social, geographical, or chronological connections in paintings, drawings, prints etc. as well as links across other artistic media. Recent developments in viewing platforms, artificial intelligence and machine learning can offer alternative possibilities in this research field, stimulate contacts and the exchange of experience, and form a bridge between art and science.

📢Inaugural Lecture: ‘Rocks and Tears. Niobe’s Fate as Dynamics of Form’ 📢

On 9 may, prof. Barbara Baert held the inaugural lecture entitled “Rocks and Tears. Niobe’s Fate as Dynamics of Form” for her Professur der Aby-Warburg-Stiftung 2023.
Publius Ovid (43 BC–17/18 AD) describes in his Metamorphoses Niobe’s transformation into a weeping rock. In prof. Baert’s lecture, Niobe becomes a paradigm for form and matter, for the dynamics between painting and sculpture, for the energies between life and death, and hence also for the humanist and (neo)classicist aesthetics debate.

📢Lieve Watteeuw received Pioneer award 2023 📢

The Pioneer Award is given annually to an individual or research group in the Human Sciences that conducts scientifically innovative research or opens up a new research path.

This year, the prize was awarded to Prof Lieve Watteeuw and the team of the Book Heritage Lab and VIEW, for their pioneering research on medieval miniatures with new laboratory techniques, particularly on the Anjou Bible.

Lieve Watteeuw is a member of staff and associate researcher at Illuminare. In 2010, together with the study centre, she curated the exhibition 'The Bible of Anjou, a Royal Manuscript Revealed' at Museum M.

Wendy Wauters, associated researcher bij Illuminare, neemt je mee naar de zinderende 16de eeuw alsof je er zelf bij was.

Een vlaag van natte hond wurmt zich door dikke blauwe wierookwolken in de Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk. De penetrante geur van lijken in ontbinding vermengt zich met de parfumwalm van opgetutte kooplui. Aan een van de tientallen zijaltaren rinkelt voor de honderdste keer een bel. Orgelspel en klokkengelui overstemmen de kreet van een marktkramer bij het portaal. In het schemerduister, langs monumentale schilderijen en fluwelen gordijnen, turen heiligen naar de wirwar van kerkgangers. En wat te denken van de vrouwen die afgehakte vingers onder het altaar verstoppen?

🆕Published: "Born to be Glorified" Assumptionist Altarpieces in the Final Phase of the Spanish 'Reconquista'🆕

Paul Vandenbroeck discusses Hans Memling’s altarpiece for the high altar of Santa María la Real in Nájera (1483-1494), one of the most spectacular Flemish art works in the Iberian Peninsula. Only three panels survive in the Antwerp Royal Museum of Fine Arts: God surrounded by singing and music-making angels. The retable’s central theme was the mystery of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin.

The iconography of the whole has been described by Jovellanos at the end of the 18th century. From ca. 1482 on, dozens of monumental altarpieces dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin in conjunction with Christological themes have been created throughout Spain. They focus on the complex role of the Holy Virgin, her triumph and glorification. It was a common belief that she was the only human to have borne up bodily into heaven. Although ‘Maryam’ was held in very high esteem by Muslims too – and as such, she was a interreligious ‘bridge’ -, her role as Theotokos or Mother of God was a point of conflict. During the last phase of the Reconquista, to Iberian Christians, the Assumption served as an image of the Church/Faith Triumphant, not as a conciliatory belief.

📢Lezing: “De Besloten Hofjes van Mechelen”📢

Het is niet zo eenvoudig om je voor te stellen hoe enorm groot de rol van religie wel was in onze streken tijdens de 16de eeuw. Gelukkig maken sommige – heel erg zeldzame – getuigen dat belang net heel tastbaar. Professor en conservator-restaurateur Lieve Watteeuw onthult alles wat we kunnen leren van Besloten Hofjes: mystieke mixed-media retabelkasten uit de tijd van Karel V en Margaretha van Oostenrijk, van top tot teen bezet met zijden bloemen, houten sculptuurtjes, inscripties in koraal of glas, stoffelijke resten en hier en daar een eeuwenoud verborgen briefje.

📢Lezing: "Over het hoofd van Johannes de Doper"📢

Een hoofd serveren op een bord, het is nogal luguber. Maar in de kunsten komt het regelmatig voor.

Een vaak voorkomend slachtoffer: Johannes de Doper. In ‘Albast’ kan je een aantal laatmiddeleeuwse exemplaren van hem – zonder ledematen – bekijken, en ook in de collectie van M is hij goed vertegenwoordigd. Tijdens deze Denkvoerlezing plaatst Soetkin Vanhauwaert, assistent conservator van de kunstcollecties van KU Leuven, het befaamde hoofd van Johannes in de kijker en geeft ze betekenis aan dit vaak nog onbekende beeldmotief.

The Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts has awarded Wendy Wauters the Mgr. Charles de Clercq prize 2022 for her work “De beroering van de religieuze ruimte. De belevingswereld van kerkgangers in de Antwerpse Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk, ca. 1450-1566”.

The prize is awarded to the best original contribution in the field of the religious history of Flanders.

Prof. Barbara Baert, associated researcher at Illuminare, is awarded the Warburg-Professur 2023.
The tradition of research in the spirit of Aby Warburg and his students is discussed and continued today at the Warburg House. With the Warburg-Professur, the Aby Warburg Foundation in Hamburg enables research stays with living and working space in the historical Warburg House. Outstanding scientists are given the opportunity to advance and present their work in a focused manner.

🆕 New Website and Exhibition: "The Breviary of Geraardsbergen: a Burgundian Manuscript kept in the Abbey of Maredsous" 🆕

The Breviary of St Adrian of Geraardsbergen, nowadays kept at Maredsous Abbey, dates from 1450, when the County of Flanders was in the hands of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy. During his rule, the Southern Netherlands experienced a period of unprecedented cultural growth. Following in the footsteps of painters such as Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden, scribes and miniaturists pooled their skills to produce manuscripts of exceptionally high quality. The impressive Geraardsbergen Breviary came into being within that energising context. The Breviary is important not only because of the exceptional quality of its ex*****on, but also because it represents a key work for our knowledge of Flemish illuminated manuscripts in the mid-fifteenth century.

In the new website the visitor can get insight into the art technical research and conservation project of the Breviary of Geraardsbergen (Grammont). Several stories illustrate the importance of the manuscript, the devotion of St Adrian, the history of the Abbey of Geraardsbergen and the talented illuminators who worked together on this extensive liturgical manuscript. The website in three languages (Dutch, French and English) offers the opportunity to browse through the entire manuscript and discover every detail.

📢Lecture: "From Kneading to Kneeling: A Terracotta Crucifixion from Santa Maria di Monteluce in Perugia"📢

On Wednesday 8 November, Julie Beckers, Postdoctoral Fellow at Illuminare, will deliver the lecture ‘From Kneading to Kneeling: A Terracotta Crucifixion from Santa Maria di Monteluce in Perugia’ at the 9th Ards Annual Colloquium: ‘The Art of Devotion. The Agency of Sculpture’.

This year, the conference will focus on the agency of works of sculpture in the medieval and early modern periods. The colloquium will combine seven selected paper presentations with two keynote speakers, for which ARDS launched a call for papers in the Spring of 2022

📢 Lecture: "The Dynamics of Devotions. About Signposts, Thresholds and Stumbling Blocks in the History of Christian Religious Life" 📢

On Thursday 27 October, Wendy Wauters will deliver a lecture on the late medieval understanding of the senses in relation to religious rituals at the international symposium: "The Dynamics of Devotions. About Signposts, Thresholds and Stumbling Blocks in the History of Christian Religious Life" (27-28 October).

Topic of the symposium is the dynamics of devotional culture. On the one hand, devotions provide a foothold for believers, on the other hand, they can lead to believers getting caught up in ritualism, which can make one lose sight of the purpose of devotion. The symposium will focus on both sides of devotional culture. The organization consists of Prof Dr Hans Geybels and Dr Charles Caspers.
