Join us on Wed., July 24 at noon for a captivating talk by Dr. Jim Karagatzides on the intricate relationship between oak trees and pine growth in the Wasaga Beach sand dunes.

In the late 1980s, Michelle Kading (MSc 1987, York U.) conducted research on tree growth in Wasaga Beach. Her findings revealed that pine trees thrived significantly better under the canopy of oak trees compared to treeless areas, thanks to the support of these "nurse trees." Nearly 40 years later, Dr. Karagatzides found Michelle's oak trees and will share insights on whether this beneficial effect persists, especially in the face of a warming climate.

Teena Sauve was attending a conference when she heard about the innovative AI work being done at Georgian.

As the owner of Botree, a digital-first training company, Teena was interested in the potential opportunities to engage with Georgian to optimize processes and support her growing company.

Teena reached out to Georgian and our Digital Research Initiative (DRI), which facilitates streamlined connections between digital projects and student resources, fostering meaningful learning opportunities. These discussions sparked a collaborative opportunity, culminating in the development of an exciting capstone project for our students.

At Georgian, capstone projects are woven into our curriculum, offering students opportunities to apply their academic knowledge to real-world challenges and innovate solutions for businesses and community. These projects enhance students' skills and readiness for the workforce through this valuable experiential learning.

With the support of Georgian's Research and Innovation staff and the leadership of our academic experts, these enthusiastic students addressed the client’s needs by working together to develop a prototype of an AI tool. This prototype optimizes instructional design processes for greater efficiency and applies Botree's proprietary Level Up learning framework at scale through the power of AI; a solution aiming to enhance curriculum development and improve learning outcomes for Botree’s clients in a cost-effective manner.

Anthony Morgan is an award-winning science communicator, Ph.D. researcher, startup founder and game designer who has hosted dozens of TV programs. He’s also the new host of The Nature of Things on CBC Television. He's obsessed with changing how people see, think and talk about science in their everyday lives. He's spent close to 20 years finding ways to do just that. He's worked at the Ontario Science Centre with Asap SCIENCE, written for newspapers, hosted CBC Radio, collaborated with municipal governments and serves on the steering committee of the misinformation-tackling Science Up First. This work and more has earned him
