Spoon Theory was imagined by Christine Miserandino in 2003 when describing what it is like living with a chronic illness.

The spoons help describe the amount of physical and/or mental energy that a person has available for daily activities and tasks, and how it can become limited.

As caregivers, you also have a limited number of spoons per day and it's so important to choose how to use them.

Please reach out if you need help with your spoons!

Caregiver guilt

One of our families asked today if it's normal to feel guilty when preparing to have a parent placed in a care residence.

The first thing to know is YES! It's perfectly normal to feel caregiver guilt. Here are a few things to remember when times get tough:

*** Acknowledge it! If you didn't feel guilty from time to time, I would be worried. Just know that once you recognize it for what it is, you are better able to deal with it.

*** Know that you are making the best decision for you and your loved one at this time. It can be hard to accept, especially if you’ve made a promise to a loved one in the past that you can no longer keep. A change in a situation may force you to break that promise, but realize that the promise was made under different circumstances. You are making the best decision with new circumstances.

*** Remind yourself of your many positive accomplishments. Recognizing and appreciating your caregiving accomplishments is essential. It reduces stress, boosts mood, and increases self-respect and confidence.

*** The most important thing to do is make time and look out for yourself. This is easier said than done, but it’s essential to keep you mentally healthy.

*** Finally, never be afraid to reach out for support from family and friends; seek caregiver support groups or professional help to work through your feelings of guilt. Know that you are not alone in your caregiving journey and the help is available.

Testimonials

It is my genuine pleasure to recommend NavigAidants to any families going through the difficult process of navigating care for their loved ones. I am the American next of kin of a 79 year old Canadian senior based in Montreal with a complicated social situation and no family in Canada. I have come into contact with many individuals and groups while trying to navigate the process of elderly care and I find that NavigAidants and Christine in particular stands out among them as a wonderful example of an empathetic, culturally sensitive, and effective social worker.

I immediately felt comfortable knowing that this McGill alumni had the appropriate experience and wealth of knowledge to ease our anxiety and provide guidance on issues of power of attorney, placement, finances, and other areas of elderly care. She also had a determination and a positive attitude towards improving the quality of life of my loved one. She helped us navigate a public placement process for my senior. Her advice and guidance has proven to be valuable in the months and years to come. We couldn't have been grateful for her guidance and expert input especially while navigating this process from the US with little knowledge of Canadian system!

Amber K.

Could not be more impressed with the services Christine provides! When you’re working full time and the personal life is messy and stressful, it’s hard to do the simple things like search for the right help or make an appointment. Christine does all the research and all the booking for you! You tell her what you need, what you’re looking for and your availabilities and she finds you solid options. Provids top recommendations with rationale why she believes the resources chosen are a good fit for you in a clear and easy to follow document and supports your ultimate decision with care and compassion. Highly recommend NavigAidants to anyone and everyone - especially folks on the go.

Candice R.

Christine is an honest and sweet person in addition to being a highly qualified social worker. She helped get immediate results for our mom during a very difficult time. In just a few weeks, she managed to get through to our local clsc in order to get an evaluation and assessment done which my sister and I were unable to achieve after months of calls and follow Ups. She offered herself as a hands on coordinator on all levels and remains available to continue if and when things change. Dementia and Alzheimer’s are incredibly difficult diseases to live with and care for in any family situation, Christine is clearly experienced, well versed, connected and took a huge load off our shoulders when it was needed most, all at a very fair cost. We can’t say enough about how instrumental she was with navigating through our stressed medical system with never-ending wait lists.
