Today we celebrated 20 YEARS as a Church. Randy Bohlender summed it up for us today saying, "The summary of my life will not be what I (we) do; but rather what God does in my (our) proximity." God has does GREAT things in our proximity and we have faith that He will continue to do so!

Here's the story in tomorrow's Expositor!

Brantford’s annual Santa Claus Parade was rescued in style on Saturday night as thousands turned out to see Santa, party at the after-bash and celebrate a long-time tradition. The hour-long parade packed the curbs leading from Stanley Street to Harmony Square where the happy crowd cheered to the lighting of the Christmas tree, got photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus and drank hot chocolate.

“I thought it was marvellous,” said Dave Carrol, who led a team of volunteers to put the event together.

“The city loves this parade and they come out in big numbers for it. A lot of people came up to me to express thanks that Freedom House took it over and the tradition is continuing.”

The event was in danger of petering out after cancellations during the pandemic and the Brantford JCI organization, which ran the event for four decades, said it no longer had the capacity to return to organizing the event.

The City of Brantford was able to put the parade together last year and local church Freedom House – known for organizing a big February event called Frosty Fest – agreed to put its resources into play this year.

“Many of the people who helped us run Frosty Fest were here helping tonight,” said Carrol, who has also been on the parade committee for several years.

The late start in organizing meant there were fewer bands and floats than in previous years but the parade still ran about an hour, culminating with the 47th appearance of Santa atop his sleigh.

It was followed by the after-party, organized by the city and featuring lots of activities, popcorn and hot chocolate, and music by Jeff Harding from BarCode.

The event had a multicultural feel to it as many newcomer families and university students were engaged in the event or clearly enjoying it for the first time.

“Brantford is the perfect sized city for a Santa Claus parade,” said Carrol. “It’s not too small or too gigantic. It’s a community coming together and that’s not easy to find.”

Shawn Stemmler, a former JCI parade volunteer, was helping organize this year’s event and said there were about 75 entries, counting floats, bands, vehicles, banners and costumed groups.

“Of course, one of the entries was the Brantford and Area Jeep and Off-Road club which had about 15 vehicles lit up, well … like Christmas trees.”

The over-all administrator for the event, Amanda Cabral-Medford, had never even been to a parade before when she signed up, said Carrol.

“She was a superstar by the end.”

Sam has been a part of Freedom House since Day One 20 years ago and has been our Board Chair for quite a number of years. Rhonda has been our Worship Department Leader and worn MANY other Ministry hats over the years.

We're sad to see them go but thrilled to see how God's going to use them in New Brunswick with whatever support we can give them! They are Freedom Houser's for life!

Our Story

Freedom House is a group of ordinary people who believe that kindness can transform a city. We have two rules: love God and love others. It's a Ministry Centre… where church happens too. We have a community-first mentality and since our inception in 2003, have consistently demonstrated an ability to mobilize a team of volunteers to meet the felt needs of our city. Worship AND Work is a core philosophy of Freedom House.

Out of our downtown, heart-of-the-city / Wilfrid Laurier University campus location, we developed "The Kindness Project." We simply look for many different ways to both care for needs AND encourage others to do the same through acts of kindness. It started with the creation of our local superhero Captain Kindness and spans everything from free school assemblies, to free street barbeques, to hosting Frosty Fest (One of the largest winter carnivals in Ontario), to developing affordable housing, to $1 Car Washes where we GIVE people the dollar for the honour of serving them, to neighbourhood-based Kindness Campaigns designed to instigate new-found goodwill between neighbors!

Our Kindness Centre weekly meets the basic, practical needs of Brantford families who range from homeless to the growing number of “working poor” who work very hard but are still unable to make ends meet. Our “Superhero in me” elementary school project is a 4-step program that helps classrooms create a culture of kindness; a culture where bullying can’t even begin to take root.

Through a vast array of community initiatives, Freedom House is able to impact more than a third of the population of Brantford in one form or another on average annually. We believe that every person has a uniquely destined role in seeing Brantford become a prosperous, thriving, FREE city. Every member is a minister at Freedom House.
