It is heartbreaking how many new mothers I see with no family or friends around to help them in the early weeks and months of motherhood. Women are left alone and then we wonder why PND is so common. We are not meant to mother alone, without being surrounded by family and friends.

In July 2018 the BC government repealed the law that mandated universal newborn eye prophylaxis.
(Yes it was a law 😯)
⁉️Why is it offered?
👁For Chlamydia and Gonorrhoeae acquired eye infections at birth.
⁉️What if I don’t have Chlamydia or Gonorrhoeae?
👁Then your baby doesn’t need it. Your health care provider should offer you screening for these STI’s during your pregnancy so they can be treated before baby is born.
⁉️What are the outcomes of these eye infections if my baby does catch it?
👁Chlamydia: mild to moderate conjunctivitis (pink eye type infection)
👁Gonorrhoeae: more severe infection leading to corneal scarring, ocular perforation, and blindness.
⁉️Why isn’t it a law anymore?
👁mandating this treatment infringes on the autonomy of the parent.
👁this treatment does not seem to improve public health.
👁the Canadian Paediatric Society argues against universal eye prophylaxis.
👁the ability of Erythromycin (the drug used) to prevent Chlamydia acquired eye infection is questionable.
👁There is a 32% failure rate when treating Gonorrhoeae with Erythromycin.
⁉️Are there downsides to giving this to my baby?
👁overuse of Erythromycin is causing GBS and Staph bacteria to become resistant to it.
👁chemical conjunctivitis can occur from the treatment
⁉️What are they doing elsewhere?
👁Other western countries favour monitoring,swabbing suspicious discharge and treating appropriately (with other drugs)
⁉️What is the bottom line?
👁This treatment is your choice as a parent. You should be offered screening for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoeae in pregnancy. If not you should ask for it!

This. When my children were newborns I remember saying that the sleep deprivation was torture! And that is why I do what I do now. It is so important for new parents to get enough sleep and support. It can be life changing. 💓
