Tomorrow is Tsuut'ina Nation Treaty Day. Celebrations will take place at the Grey Eagle beginning at 8am.

The Tsuut’ina Nation first entered into a Treaty with the British Crown in 1877 with the signing of Treaty 7 in September of that year. This Treaty initially created a reserve at Blackfoot Crossing, near Gleichen Alberta, that was to be jointly shared between the Tsuut’ina, the Siksika and the Kainai Nation. Following the disappearance of the Buffalo from the Alberta plains in the following years, and unrest with the shared reserve, the Nation moved near Fort Calgary in 1880. The Nation endured further hardships in the years follwing the signing of Treaty 7, and in the summer of 1881 discussions began with representatives of the Canadian Government for the creation of a new and separate reserve. After scouting potential locations, the Tsuut’ina settled along the Fish Creek that fall, on land that would soon be formally granted as a reserve.

On June 27 1883, a new Treaty, as a supplement to Treaty 7, was agreed to by Chief Bull Head, Many Horses, Eagle Robe, Big Plume and Painted Otter. The new Treaty established the Tsuut’ina Nation reserve that we know today, having been surveyed the year before, and consisting of 108 square miles of land between Calgary and Bragg Creek.

Join us at Enmax Park tomorrow for National Indigenous Family Day and Pow Wow! The theme for 2024 is “Inspiring Our Youth for Change” and reflects the pride that First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities take in their rich heritage, traditions, and cultures through being the caretakers of Mother Earth and water the giver of life.

06/21/2024

We started off National Indigenous Peoples Day with a land acknowledgment and a smudge, then joined together for a pancake breakfast and conversations about Indigenous history, colonization and our systems. We discussed ways to continue to learn through culture, ceremony, music, and listening. As we step into community, favouring culture over process, Enviros continues our commitment to learning, truth, and reconciliation.

The song in the video is titled "Eagle Song" by the Red Shadow Singers. The Red Shadow Singers are the main drumming group for Turtle Lodge (Sagkeeng First Nation, Manitoba). Hear the song here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLBaMQYhIvY

Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day. It is a day to recognize and celebrate the history, heritage, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis across Canada.

For generations, many Indigenous groups and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on June 21 or around that time of year because of the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year.

In 1996, June 21 was declared National Aboriginal Day. In 2017, the day was renamed to National Indigenous Peoples Day.

June 22nd is "Perseverance in Pride", the Airdrie Pride Society Pride Festival and Solidarity. The day starts at 10:30 at Airdrie City Hall where the solidarity walk will begin with Disabled, Indigenous and People of Colour leading the way.

In the 1960's q***r folk were rioting and demanding safety. After the Stonewall Riots in 1969, organizers wanted to build on that spirit of resistance and planned a march called "Gay Pride" . Airdrie Pride Society chooses a solidarity walk because "Pride is resistance. We are walking together to resist those who are trying to silence us, diminish us, divide us. "
