On June 21, for National Indigenous Peoples Day, we recognize and celebrate the history, heritage, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis across Canada. For generations, many Indigenous groups have celebrated their culture and heritage on June 21 or around that time of year because of the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year. For more information about National Indigenous People day check out https://www.rcaanc-cirnac.gc.ca/eng/1100100013718/1708446948967

May 5th is a national day of awareness to honour and remember the missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and the two spirited (MMIWG2S+).
The roots of National Red Dress Day started out when Jaime Black, a Métis artist, embarked on creating a meaningful and evoking art installation called, “REDress Project” which consisted of hanging red dresses in various locations to create feels of pain and loss felt by loved ones and survivors.

In honour of BC youth week, we would like to highlight a youth success story. Cyrus is a youth that accesses our services regularly and consistently shows support for the CYHC. Cyrus recalls that he first started coming to the CYHC because he was not in a good headspace and wanted to find support within the community. Through connecting with our counsellors, Cyrus has been able to set goals for himself and our staff has helped reach his full potential. As a result, Cyrus was able to send his application to St. John’s Ambulance Canada, successfully complete the training for his CPR and AEPD training, and is now certified by Red Cross Canada. Congratulations Cyrus!

Meet Dillon! Dillion is a practicum student completing his Master’s of Arts in Clinical Psychology. He is one of our counsellors that is at the CYHC on Tuesday’s, Wednesday’s and Thursday’s.
What Dillon loves most about counselling is the opportunity to provide intentional, judgement-free time to someone amidst the busyness of life: time to connect, share, and gain insight. It brings him joy to collaborate and discover who it is sitting across from him.
Fun fact about Dillon: he loves reading! He specifically enjoys classic literature.
Dillon’s favourite quote is: “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” - Viktor Frankl
