Hello 👋 I’m Leah! Registered Nurse, IBCLC, Sleep Consultant & Mama of 2! When can you start giving your baby water?🚨The Public Health Agency of Canada suggests that children do not require any other form of liquid, other than breast milk or formula, until at least 6 months of age✅ Around 9-12 months of age, you can start offering 4-8 ounces of water per day until they reach 1 year of age* Up until 1 year of age, water is optional and should never replace breastmilk or formula as it has no calories, no healthy fats, no carbohydrates, no proteins, and no minerals.* When introducing water, use and open cup or straw cup. This helps them to develop oral motor skills!Avoid putting it in a bottle as this could cause them to drink too much at one time & it prevents them from practicing new skillsYou are doing your best & I’m here to support you through the challenges and excitement of parenthood❤️🩺🚫All The Mama Coach Leah Tully social media posts are for educational purposes only 🚫

Want to know why your baby is spitting up?Hello 👋 I’m Leah! Registered Nurse, IBCLC, Sleep Consultant & Mama of 2! Here are a few possible reasons why:👶Reflux: this is usually only in 1% of babies so is not usually the cause. Reflux that needs medications often also makes it difficult for babies to gain weight and eat. 👶Development: the sphincter is still immature and will not fully develop until 6 months👶Oversupply: it can be challenging for babies to feed and they take in more air and spit up more👶Feeding according to how many minutes (breastfeeding) or how many ounces (bottle feed) instead of watching your babies feeding cues.👶Oral restriction: this keeps baby from keeping a deep latch which means taking in more air which causes more spit up👶Mixing up feeding cues and sleepy cues. 🚨If you are concerned about how much your baby spits up or they are spitting up blood, please see your HCP🚨You are doing your best & I’m here to support you through the challenges and excitement of parenthood❤️🩺🚫All The Mama Coach Leah Tully social media posts are for educational purposes only 🚫

Hello 👋 I’m Leah! Registered Nurse, IBCLC, Sleep Consultant & Mama of 2! Do you hear ‘clicking’ when your baby is breastfeeding? Here’s a few reasons why:1. The latch is too shallow and your baby is unable to maintain their suction🚨 Resolve this by pointing the ni**le to their nose, when they open their mouth, chin first then up and over so they get an asymmetrical latch that’s deep2. Your flow is high and your baby is struggling to mange it🚨 This may not be an issue to fix if they’re still having enough wet and dirty diapers each day, they are content during feeds and after, and your ni**les are not sore. 3. Your baby has an oral restriction: lip or tongue tie which impedes their ability to lift their tongue up and create a proper suction around the ni**le🚨This may not require you to do anything UNLESS your baby is fussy, struggling to gain weight, issues with spitting up & reflux etc.If you need support, I’m a RN and IBCLC and I can help you if you need support!! Is your baby crying at the breast all the time?🤩Here’s 3 reason this could be happening!1. Flow is to slow! Your supply has decreased and your baby is noticing. 2. Flow is too fast! You have oversupply which makes feeding stressful for you baby!3. They’re not hungry! Sometimes hungry and tired look the same. If you’ve tried a feed and they’re still crying, put them to sleep instead. This one gets missed all the time!! If your baby is crying at every feed, let’s find out why! Hello 👋 I’m Leah! Hello 👋 I’m Leah! Registered Nurse, IBCLC, Sleep Consultant & Mama of 2! Is your baby coughing, sputtering or fussing at the breast?Do they go stiff like a board and seem tense with feeding? Are they unsettled between feeds?YOU MAY HAVE AN OVERSUPPLY!!!!Here’s what you can do:1. Stop pumping! Don’t use your silicone pump either! Hello 👋 I’m Leah! Registered Nurse, IBCLC, Sleep Consultant & Mama of 2!

My baby used to nap so well but now she is having short naps and only
Wants to contact nap on me!

⁉️What’s happening⁉️
🚨This can start happening between 4-8 weeks of age when their maternal melatonin drops & babies start to develop their own circadian rhythm

🤩The benefit of this is that they’ll start to consolidate night sleep which is great but it also means more daytime awake time.

🚨what can you do?🚨
Get them the daytime sleep however you can! Contact naps, stroller rides, car rides, etc.
Use those sleep associations! Pacifiers, dark room, white noise.

Hello 👋 I’m Leah! Registered Nurse, IBCLC, Sleep Consultant & Mama of 2!

Is Your Baby Fighting Sleep?😴

My to mitigate this is to avoid letting them dose at the breast or bottle!

⁉️Why?? When you let them do this, their sleep pressure decreases and your baby will fight sleep when you put them down.

🙋🏼‍♀️What should you do instead?? Watch your baby and you should see and hear those big sucks and swallows. If not, stop the feed and put them down for sleep.

It’s Finally Summer! 😎Here’s some things to keep in mind to keep your babies cool while you’re getting outside ☀️

1. Nurse and/or bottle feed often as this keeps baby hydrated
2. Keep them out of the direct sun!
3. Use those stroller shades but DO NOT throw a blanket over to keep the sun out as this does not allow for airflow and your baby can overheat

!! Is Your Baby Having a Nursing Strike?!

Hello 👋 I’m Leah! Registered Nurse, IBCLC, Sleep Consultant & Mama of 2!

Heres what you can do when your baby refuses the breast:
🚨The most important thing is to find out why they’re refusing! See an IBCLC to support you with this!

After that, try the following:
1. Do more skin-to-skin
2. Never force them to breastfeed as this just increases aversion
3. Find a new location to feed to change the scenery and ensure it’s quiet and even dark so there’s no distractions.
4. If they’re fussy and crying, give the bottle or even use a medicine cup with breastmilk in it to settle them and then try offering the breast once they’ve calmed down.
5. If you’re using a bottle, ensure paced bottle feeding technique is used!
6. Pump first until you feel your letdown and then offer the breast

It could take a few days but you’ve got this

Reasons Why Your Baby Is Having a Nursing Strike🚨
This is so common! I see you, mama. Things finally seem to be going okay and then suddenly your little one is refusing to breastfeed or is really fussy at the breast🤯

Here’s some potential reasons why:
1. your supply has changed
2. You’re bottle feeding as well and the flows don’t match
3. Baby is teething or unwell
4. They’re distracted which happens more as they grow and are more aware of their surrounding
5. You might be more stressed
6. You have a different smell (due to a lotion, soap, perfume, etc)

🤩This is typically temporary!! Watch for my next post to explain what can be done to move past this!

When will my milk come in?!

I get asked this question all the time! Remember that colostrum is all that your baby needs initially!! Colostrum IS MILK and your newborn’s stomach is the size of a marble.

Don’t panic! Just put the baby to breast as often as possible as more breast stimulation =more milk production!

Hello 👋 I’m Leah! Registered Nurse, IBCLC, Sleep Consultant & Mama of 2!

🍼How Much Formula Should My Infant Have🍼

🔥The information above is a general guideline for your formula fed infant. 🔥

Typically, newborns feed every 2-3 hours or 8-12 times in 24 hours.

🧐Don’t become too focused on the ounces consumed.🧐Remember that if you are breastfeeding instead of formula feeding, there’s no accurate way to calculate how many ounces your infant is consuming.

Instead, focus on their growth (following their curve), how many wet and dirty diapers they’re having as well as their temperament between feeds.

👶Also remember to pay attention to your infant’s signs that they’re full! Follow your infants lead!

Do you buy the cookies or the tea?!!

Here’s the thing, taking any of these does not address the root of the problem! Why is your supply low?

Stimulation! Supply & Demand! That is the magic key!
