The Happiest Photographers in the World Award Winning Wedding Photographers. Risk Takers. Not Like All The Rest.
The Tree. THE tree. I saw it on Twitter this morning, but didn’t believe it. So , Steph and I jumped in the truck to go see for ourselves. It was true.
This tree ranks up there w The Fiddle, The Clock, The Donair and The Geese. This tree inspired so many ideas. So many of them failed miserably but a few worked out. Len Wagg also took some incredible shots of this tree across all seasons and it’s really something to see! I believe Shaun Lowe also spent some time here as well with some amazing results. I spoke to the owners this morning and they’re gutted over the loss. They’ve asked that everything be left untouched, as they plan to harvest the wood, which I read somewhere that it’s 250-300 years old. Thank you, to the owners for letting us wander through your field across all 4 seasons to shoot this tree. We’re very sad to see it go.
Deloitte.
Well, after 13 years of shooting weddings, Steph and I are officially calling it.
Chicken Nuggets.
That’s a wrap on weddings. Technically you could say we retired when the pandemic hit as we have shot less than 3 in the last two years. It’s no secret and we’re not throwing ourselves a retirement party. We’re working harder than we ever have, just no more weekends. For now, it’s important for us to be in the stands watching hockey games and basketball games and yes, I’ve found my way into an assistant coach position on Ruby’s flag football team. I don’t regret any of the time we spent shooting weddings but the pandemic changed a lot. We changed a lot. The studio changed, a lot. I’m not going to say we will never shoot another wedding again…there’s one I still have my fingers crossed for, someday.
So now that we are retired, I’ve got a LOT of stories to share about weddings and vendors and all of the stories and experience we’ve accumulated over the years, travelling around the world shooting weddings. I am very much looking forward to sharing all of these stories in one way or another. The crazy s**t we came up w to make people laugh and feel comfortable w us around lives on like a Seinfeld episode.
Is Applehead done with wedding? Hell no. Ashley + Richard are nowhere near done and we are very happy to say they will continue taking on all things wedding related, from photo to video, with bookings into 2023.
For Steph and I, commercial work, headshots and grad work has exploded and Pineapple Studio is about to have its biggest year yet.
We have this running joke where life is just a video game and you’re just trying to make it through all the levels. We feel like we finally beat the wedding level and now it’s on to the studio world.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you to every single one of you that we have encounter over the years at weddings and in the wedding industry.
Liam
I remember sitting on the floor in the empty space that would become the world famous and planning how it would look if it was a photo studio for a few days.
Well, we managed to get a plan and a few dates from Sarah and are setting up shop for a few days in Wolfville in April.
April 12, 26 and 27, we’ll be turning the Wolfville Wedding Chapel into a photo studio for a few days of Acadia Grad Portraits and corporate headshots. We’ve got all the Acadia degree hoods and unlimited digital background options for headshots.
You think it will be awful. We promise it will not be.
Select the Wolfville options in the link in our profile for full details and booking.
Got questions?
Just axe, man!
We’re going to close for the day! Lots of ice out there. Stay safe!
Many thanks to the Herald for this story covering recent online harassment of our business by an anti-vax group. It was a sad, frustrating, and difficult experience, and we know we are not alone.
If any of our clients past, present, or future have any questions, please reach out.
We will continue to do our part to keep everyone safe.

Bride and gloom: Halifax photographer harassed online after he said ‘I don’t’ to not-fully-vaxxed wedding shoot | SaltWire HALIFAX, N.S. — Liam Hennessey went for a walk in the woods on Thursday, to find a place where there’s no internet and no people. Hennessey has owned ...
Big day for the MRB CONTRACTING | Mike Burns] team as they wrap up a big, 2 year build in Chester. Steph and I went down to just sling some cameras and capture the wrap up, in real life. We did want to try this one thing w the staircase…
Thanks for having us MRB CONTRACTING | Mike Burns] It’s a lot of fun to watch you and act like children in the woods but it’s also a lot of fun to see your grown up talents too! Thanks for having us, buds.
Congratulations to this newlywed couple who have to remain anonymous because they still haven’t told people. I love you, guys! (It’s been a long time since we put people into a scene and tried to make them as teeny, tiny as possible. I actually think that would be a great corporate team building exercise; head out to Pollys Cove, spread out over a couple of acres and try and get people to run through a variety of scenarios. This one is called ‘walk this way, but leave space between you’ and Ive missed this hilarity.
I like to tell all the Dal Pharmacy grads that I used to be a pharma rep and share stories about good data and lunch & learns. One of my favourites was a pharmacist who sat back and chuckled, as she asked what I was going to tell them about periods and birth control from a 25 year old male’s perspective. Haha. Touché!
Pharmacy grads all week. I need to brush up on my studies!
Mukisa came to the studio with an armload of awards from Dalhousie School of Law and we made the most of it. The awards were also a great way to show off the nails too! We also did ‘Look Left’ as a nod to the old school grad portrait shooters who, for whatever reason, he grads look off camera. Little know fact, this pose was adopted by cool Instagrammers around the globe. lol congratulations, Mukisa! I really love this set. Thanks for letting us share them!
Ashley + Richard met up w Grace last week for a grad portrait session on campus Congratulations, Grace. 📸
Thanks for coming in, Jo-Ann. That was a lot of laughs and I was not surprised at all to hear that you know 'Mama Jennie'. Thanks for the kind words, Jo-Ann. Good luck!!
You've probably noticed I have a new headshot! I'll be honest, I like this one. Like most people, I don't always love pictures of myself. But I like this one because I think it captures a few things about me.
I think it captures my optimism, my energy and, yes, that is pretty close to my real hair colour! It's simple and straightforward and I hope you can see some kindness and compassion.
I had fun with my photographer, Liam Hennessy of Applehead Studio Photography. We did this in 15 minutes. He got me! I hope it will help Halifax voters see all of this too.
I'm glad to be giving Haligonians the option to vote for strong leadership and authentic representation for our city. I'm proud to be running as your Green candidate and I hope to see you on the campaign trail!

Happy Anniversary, buds!
At the end of the day, the holding off, the replanning and rearranging and what-if-ing. It’s totally worth it. Congratulations, Jill + Brad! 📸
Well, I think it’s safe to say we are back in full swing, in studio and out! We’re shooting people walking and smiling, without masks! We’ve settled into a nice new normal here at the studio. As Steph and I shoot fewer and fewer weddings, I’m spending a lot more time in the studio, shooting headshots, portraits and grad work every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Tuesday’s and Thursdays we’re shooting out of studio days for corporate and commercial work. Ashley + Richard are shooting 7 days a week with video work, family sessions on location, grad portraits on location, bo***ir in studio as well as working w our existing long term commercial clients on both photo + video projects. I think I’m mostly writing this so it all sinks in. We did it. We made it through and I think we’re better than we were before! Thanks for hanging with us over the last year or so. I’m very optimistic about future. That feels nice to say now because it wasn’t so long ago I was having ci******es and left handers for breakfast with a big side of bleak.
Happy Fathers Day to all the Dads who laid the groundwork for a lifetime of Dad jokes, for reaching us patience and tolerance in any situation. To the Dads who taught us that family always come first but also ‘righty tighty, lefty loosey’. Thanks to the Dads who passed down their record collections and also never said anything when we skimmed some liquor from all the bottles in the cabinet. Thanks for cheering us on at sports whether we were really good or really bad. Thanks to the Dads who were nice to us when we dated your daughters even though you probably didn’t like us. Thanks for making us get jobs at young ages and thanks for making us get educated. Thanks for being the cool Dads, the quiet Dads, the fixer Dads and the sporty Dads. Thanks for teaching us how to be good people, even though we may not have appreciated it at the time. Happy Fathers Day, Dad. We missed you yesterday but I did my part to make some bad jokes and fall asleep on the couch w the remote in my hand.
Well this was pretty cool. Scott is graduating with his Master of Science in Business. He’s the first student to complete this program at Dal and because of that, his professor wanted to come and be a part of it.
Dr. Kyung Young Lee, is the Program Director of Master of Science in Business at Dal.
I love the PhD regalia and I thought it was very cool that Dr Lee took the time to drop in for Scott’s grad shoot.
It's wild to think that we were doing this a year ago!
Happy re-re-re-opening everyone!!

We are Re-Opening (again)!!
I can’t think of a better shot to post about a safe re-opening and the happiness it brings with it, than a hilarious out-take of pure joy from the very cool and very fun, Dr Lisa Barrett.
There is a giddy sense of joy in the tone of every email and phone call today and it’s awesome!! As of Wednesday, June 2, 2021, we’re back to ‘normal’ in the studio for headshots and corporate work, grad portraits and bo***ir, video creation, family and maternity shoots.
It’s finally time to make the donuts!
Hey everyone! We are researching, asking questions and trying to figure some things out with respect to being open or being closed. We don’t know if we are a Personal Service or Retail and so we’ve decided to close up again and wait until we get official word on what kind of business we are. So, until then....well, I don’t know. Support your local pubs and restaurants and stay safe (and ride motorbikes).
Happy International Women’s Day!
This photo was never intended to have capes but Steph P said, “It was be amazing if you could add capes haha.” Steph C used her photoshop superpowers and added them in.

Imagine, ALL the people.
We’ve been clientfriends w Jenn for over three years now. She once told us she isn’t really the ‘planning a wedding’ kind of girl so we shot a big party for her when she got her PHD (hi Doc!) so how much did we smile when she wrote us a few weeks ago and said “I’m getting married on Dec 13. Wanna come?” Hellll yes we wanna come! A quick ceremony at the Halifax Club and then a few pics downtown and the rest is history! It’s official, we signed as witnesses! Jenn and Dan, you brightened up our lives at a much needed time. I wish we could hug you, but for now, consider yourself e-hugged. Congratulations, buds. Much love. Good luck w the move!!
Teeny, tiny Jenn + Dan at Grande Parade tonight was a huge, massive amount of fun.
Hi Everyone.
Effective immediately, Applehead + Pineapple Studio will be closed for the next two weeks or until the province and Dr Strang changes the restrictions that were set forth today.
Although we were not listed w bars, gyms etc, we operate a busy studio in an environment where, like restaurants and bars, people do not wear masks for a portion of their time in the studio. We serve a similar clientele (University grads, kids, parents etc) in the downtown area and there's no way we're risking everyone's health and safety in exchange for money. It's not worth it. We'll be here when this is over, I promise you that. The first round didn't break us, we won't let this one break us either.
So, let's take care of our families, friends and clients as a top priority over the next two weeks. It's really that simple. We don't want to be responsible for putting ANYONE at risk.
If you have questions, please feel free to drop us a line, but we ask that you give us a 48-72 hours to get back to you as we're currently dealing with the cancelling and rescheduling of a lot of bookings in all of our businesses.
Much love. Stay safe.

Thanks for coming in! Serious subject but we had a lot of fun. Thanks for making it happen!

Now this is a Wedding Trend list we can get behind!
I have never seen Lighting rank high on a trend list, but that’s exciting. This whole list is great.
(I don’t understand the photo of the couple who have their heads together, holding out a postcard, but maybe they are envisioning the great lighting at their reception!)
Here’s to good lighting and candles in 2021!!
