Fredy Ochoa is a passionate coffee farmer located in a picturesque village called Santa Lucia. Fredy grew up on his farm with this family who dedicated themselves to agriculture. They farmed maize, beans, and other vegetables. In 2012 Fredy inherited a portion of the farm and began planting 200 coffee plants. Slowly, he kept planting more over the years.
As of 2024, his farm is 3.5 acres and 95% of the production is for specialty coffee. He keeps 5% of the coffee to roast and sell locally himself.
The income Fredy has received from his coffee allowed him to improve his drying area and expand his house a bit. He uses part of his terrace for African drying beds, allowing him to control the quality and make most of the sunlight.
You can find Finca Los Ochoa at our North Street Cafe. It is a washed process ruiru 11 varietal with a floral aroma, complex citric flavours and a lasting juicy body.
Visiting was a highlight of our origin trip to Honduras. Hearing about their model Finca being used to train other farms, how Bryan is experimenting with his anaerobic fermentation and producing such great tasting coffees. His family’s hospitality and kindness meant we just had to bring their coffee to the people of Halifax.
New coffee just landed in Halifax all the way from Bryan Adolfo Bautista’s farm in Márcala, Honduras. We were fortunate enough to visit Bryan and his family in March. His hospitality, kindness, and focus on sustainable practices on his farm made it a no brainer to select his coffee.
The coffee we have imported is a naturally processed catuai. During sampling at the cupping lab in Honduras we got notes of tamarind and pineapple with bright acidity and balanced body.
Over the next few days we will be roasting this coffee and making it available to you! We have lots of pictures to share which will show why we chose to bring this coffee to Halifax!
Stay tuned!
❤️☕️Java Blend Union Update☕️❤️
We are pleased to share that the unfair labour practice complaint and the boycott have been withdrawn.
In response to the complaint filed on January 31st, we had provided the union all our financials as well as working documents outlining our objective criteria for the layoffs. We have agreed on a settlement last night and we will approach bargaining with the same transparency. We are looking forward to continuing to work with the union and the employees in good faith to reach a collective agreement.
Thank you to all who have supported us in different ways over the past difficult years and we look forward to continuing in providing excellent coffees and service!
Iced drinks on the menu at the cafes!
Ice Chai Latte - try it with oat milk and a shot of espresso!

Cold drinks in the fridge!
Irish Cream Latte to warm you up on this dreary day!
Our cafés are an important part of Java Blend.
In a story that is unfortunately not unique in the food and beverage industry, we have struggled since March 2020. It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of our decision to lay off a number of our staff.
We have made every effort to prioritize keeping our doors open, lights turned on, and our staff working as long as possible.
This decision was not made lightly, but ultimately was the only way to avoid closing our café doors permanently.
We would like to thank our staff who have worked hard with us. They have been on the front line of our business, greeting, connecting wth, and serving our customers day in and day out. So much of Java Blend’s successes can be credited to them.
Although we have attempted to ease their transition by offering twice the amount of pay in lieu of notice required by the Nova Scotia Labour Code and have extended benefit plans until the end of February, we know this was difficult news to receive.
The café will be closed tomorrow (January 24th) so we can remain available to the staff affected.
We’d like to thank our customers for their continued support over the years, and we hope to continue serving you in a sustainable way.
Starting Thursday, January 25th, we will resume regular operations at the café with slight changes to our hours. We look forward to greeting you during our new hours.
