Reflecting on Black History Month with profound admiration for the McMaster individuals who‘ve displayed remarkable resistance within the diaspora. From campus to community, their unwavering commitment to challenging barriers resonates deeply.
To acknowledge their narratives, honour the struggles, and collectively strive for a more inclusive and equitable future, DEN has decided to celebrate Black History Month with this year’s theme “From the Continent to Diaspora: Honouring Black Resistance” by collaborating with BSA and sharing stories of resistance within the diaspora that exist at McMaster.

September 30th is dictated as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, or also known as Orange Shirt Day. We take this day to commemorate the lives lost in the residential school experience, the cultural genocide that took place, and the survivors and their families currently healing from its aftermath. We also commit to the ongoing process of reconciliation and encourage meaningful, educated discussions with family and friends.

We hope you take this time to further educate yourself on the history of residential schools and their lasting impact on the mental, physical, and emotional well-being of Indigenous communities. It is important to be mindful of these experiences and to remember that these values and acts of reconciliation are not exclusive to one day, but should be ever-present year long.

The compiled list above of resources is non-exhaustive, meaning that we strongly recommend that you do your own research and learn to create visibility for Indigenous communities in your own life. It is the settler Canadian’s responsibility to get educated, advocate for, and engage meaningfully in reconciliation with Indigenous people.
