Physio Friday!!

We're back with one last post on squats. If you've been able to master the body weight squat these options are a great way to progress. The goal is always to keep gaining more strength.

Goblet squats are a great place to start as they are very similar to a normal sit to stand or body weight squat.

Kickstand and pistol squats can be useful to increase effort without using weights.

Barbell squats work well to build to heavier and heavier loads.

Have a great day everyone!

Physio Friday!!

One more post about deadlifts this week. Depending on a persons goals, movement capabilities, and equipment available we may choose to do a variation of the traditional deadlift. There are a lot of variations that can be done, but here are a few of our favourite!

Physio Friday!

Last week we learned all about the basic components and benefits of doing a deadlift. One of the hardest parts of completing a deadlift properly is learning to hinge at the hips instead of rounding through the spine. This week we have a few exercises to help you master the hip hinge.

1) 4 point rock back – find and maintain a neutral spine as you rock your hips back towards your heels

2) Kneeling hip hinge – find and maintain a neutral spine as you hinge at your hips moving towards your heels

3) Hip hinge with a band - find and maintain a neutral spine as you hinge at your hips in the direction of the band. Return to starting position using your glutes and hamstrings as the prime movers

Happy Friday everyone!

Physio Friday!

Welcome to the first Physio Friday here at HTC! Today we are going to learn how to perform a barbell deadlift.

Deadlifts are a full body exercise that focus on strengthening the posterior chain (such as the back extensors, glutes, and hamstrings). A deadlift is a functional exercise that translates to daily or work activities requiring lifting or lowering objects from the ground - everyone should learn to deadlift! Demonstrating the deadlift today is Physiotherapist Matt Kelley!

When setting up for the deadlift, start with the feet hip/shoulder width apart with the toes pointing forward. The shins should be 2-3 finger widths away from the bar.
Next, reach down and grab the bar with the hands just outside of the knees. Hinge at the hips, keeping the spine (all the way from the head to the tailbone) in a neutral position as you grab onto the bar. It is okay to allow the knees to bend slightly as you grab the bar - the bar should now be touching the shins.
Grip the bar and pull the shoulder blades down and together (think about squeezing a lemon between the shoulder blades). Brace your core and take a light breath in.
Reverse your hip hinge and return to a stand in a slow and controlled motion, keeping the bar close to the body. Breathe out.
Next, slowly lower down, hinging/pushing the hips back to return to the starting position. And repeat!
Extra tips:
Deadlifts can also be performed without weights, with bands, or with dumbbells. The motion will be the same - but your grip will vary depending on what you decide to use!
You can grip the barbell in a variety of ways - here we demonstrate a 'double overhand grip.' You can also try a hook grip (like the overhand grip but with the thumbs tucked under the fingers) or a mixed grip (one hand in an overhand grip, and the other hand reversed with the palm facing forward on the bar).
Let us know if you gave it a try!

Introducing Therapy Thursday! 🧐

Follow along to learn about all the things a physiotherapist can help you with from prehab to rehab and everything in between! You can make better decisions about your health and wellness when you are educated about the topic.📚

Today we’re talking about the TMJ! Your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is part of your jaw.

Common symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorder include:
• Headaches
• Pain in the ear, face, jaw or neck
• Pain while chewing
• Clicking, grinding or popping sounds in the jaw when opening
or closing your mouth
• Locking of the jaw in an open or closed position

Therapists focus on assessing your posture, jaw and neck range of motion and muscle strength, mobility of your cervical and thoracic spine and movement patterns. We can then treat what we find to help decrease pain, restore range of motion of the jaw or neck and provide you with exercises to maintain healthy function.

Call to book an appointment at (306) 682-6610.
