TAP! The Art of Physiotherapy 07/12/2024

This past week I have finally gotten off my butt and started releasing videos on my new YouTube channel "TAP!- The Art of Physiotherapy. Its been something of a hobby that I have been puttering at for the past few years, that combines my love of physiotherapy and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The info is aimed at helping to teach healthcare practitioners what I believe to be the current best practices for some of the most common injuries we see in sports (and specifically in BJJ). It also serves to teach those in BJJ about injury management, and possibly even injury prevention by thoroughly training common "weak spots".
I have no expectations that this is more than helping to educate those that want to learn more about their body, and perhaps help share knowledge that I can usually only do with one-on-one mentoring of physios trying to develop their skills.

Nation Athletic is a BJJ training apparel company that has supplied me with some cool gear, and they have been a pleasure to work with. Interestingly, the owner, Marc Sharma, was severely injured and had to go thru intensive physio and training to be able to get back on the mats. Because of his injury, he had to change his jobs, and in the process has come out with one of the best BJJ brands out there. The design is clean. The materials are top-notch. I am so happy that we can collaborate and support each other.

If you know anybody that you think could benefit from these videos, please send them to https://www.youtube.com/

I am always looking for suggestions, and look forward to slowly chip away at this weird hobby...hopefully helping 1 or 2 people along the way.

See you on the mats soon!

WOW! Who is this? None other than Mr. Michael White, our newest part-time physiotherapist joining the MotionWorx Team! ๐ŸŽ‰

๐Ÿ’ญ Michael comes to us with nearly 50 years experience, with additional expertise in IMS, acupuncture, TMJ dysfunction, and vestibular training.

๐Ÿ… Michael has owned five separate outpatient orthopaedic practices. He has held the position of Vice President of the College of Physiotherapy in British Columbia, and was at one time Chief Examiner for the College of Physiotherapy.

๐Ÿ˜Ž Fun facts:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Michael has an extensive list of hobbies which include playing music, rugby, soccer, skiing (ski patrol), writing, poetry, travel, gardening, and cooking. Ingrid may a*o have an Oprah companion as Michael is quite the baritone. In his years of exploring what life has to offer he has restored antique vehicles, raced his motorcycle at Mission Raceway, scuba dived, and has a pilot license that he sadly no longer uses

You can book with Michael now! Contact us at 778-478-9679 or book online at www.motionworxphysio.com

Some of you may have heard of this treatment buzz ๐Ÿ word from friends, colleagues or family members when speaking about an injury โ€“ IMS! โ€œYou should try IMS for that painโ€. IMS stands for Intramuscular Stimulation. It is a form of assessment and treatment used most often for chronic pain being caused by tight muscles that wonโ€™t release. So, if youโ€™ve been singing โ€œLet it go, let it go!โ€ to your muscles, IMS might be something that could help you.

So the time has come...
Yesterday (Dec 20, 2023) I received my blackbelt from Dave Rothwell at Pacific Top Team Vernon Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

I honestly struggled with believing I was ready, but then the question comes up...when are we truly ready for anything that's important to us? Dave in essence, reminded me that all the colored belts are like going through the stages of school (and university) and now at black belt, it's time to go out and get real-world experience. Time to REALLY learn BJJ. That sat well with me as I genuinely see a difference in academic vs clinical knowledge in my professional career.

Back to the big day...It was such an honor to share this promotion to black belt with 2 other genuinely great guys, Adam Joseph Pingrenon and Jamie Wootton. Ping has been welcoming to me from the first day I came to vernon and I enjoy sharing in his love for puzzles. His speech was from the heart, and you could feel his passion and dedication to the sport and the club. Thank you Ping.

Jamie, was my first coach in grappling, at a time when I was doing kickboxing and was tired of getting hit in the face day after day. It is really interesting to see how the first guard pass I learned from him (which I have not seen anywhere else) has come full circle to be now what I have been working on for control and sweeps - hip rotational torques. He has always encouraged me to attack from multiple fronts using my knowledge from physiotherapy and has been an amazing training partner since day one. We both love Magnum PI, so that doesn't hurt either. Thank you, sir.

Jiu Jitsu has taught me about the benefits of losing and suffering. Often being the smaller guy (or perhaps a guy who likes to fight from the bottom), I have learned to figure out where things went wrong from repeated failures. No one said it was easy, but sometimes you just have to figure it out the hard way.

Jiu Jitsu has taught me the benefits of breathing. Again, often being the guy on the bottom, taking a breath, and being able to figure out when you are in danger and when you are not, can be the difference between success and failure. Calm or panic. This translates to life in many ways. I still continue to learn this, but taking a breath and thinking for a few seconds can make a world of difference.

Jiu Jitsu has reinforced the importance of sharing/paying it forward. The more I share what I know, the more it helps me out in the long run. The more it helps the people around me. The more honest feedback we can give each other, the more we all improve. The better it elevates our sport.

Jiu jitsu is my sanctuary. It's a place where I have to focus on nothing else (or you pay the price) and surround myself in learning and pushing the limits of what I can do. It definitely helps when you are surrounded by people of similar goals and mindset...

So on that note,

Thank you Dave Rothwell and Pacific Top Team Vernon Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for always being so welcoming to me, and encouraging, challenging and humbling me every day. Thank you to all my training partners who let me try my weird game out on them, in hopes that one day I will feel like I have a small grasp of the depth of this sport. Thank you to all the competitive athletes I roll with, I love playing with the sharks, it's inspiring to see what many of you are capable of, and I hope to continue to learn from you all.

Thank you to Sarah Vera for encouraging me to pursue working with Yoga for BJJ and embrace the mixing of my two passions- physio and BJJ.

Thank you to JP Garcia for welcoming me to your home in L.A. and introducing me to some of the legends in our sport.

Thank you to Justin Aujla-Fieldt for being an amazing representative of how a coach should act, on and off the mats.

Thank you to Ryan Tooley for helping me research the many facets of our amazing sport. You are my librarian.

Thank you to Winter Breget brothers for never giving me a break, even in cooldowns- I know you are destined to be among the world's best, and it's an honor to see your growth. You have taught me many things (including how to breathe properly), and you are a true embodiment of a martial artist.

Thank you to Sergey Raspopov for making me problem-solve thru suffering...its always an adventure.

Thank you to Mike Sweeney and Becca Sweeney- the most amazing couple in BJJ and amazing teachers/training partners. I wish you well in Calgary, and I hope to come soon to support and learn soon.

Thank you to Amanda Mosher, Christine Ahola, Jessica Hodgson, Wesley Liefke, Ja*on Crighton and all my other training partners who allow me to problem solve thru creating a system of defense and attacking the legs. It's never ending, and I would not have it any other way.

and finally a HUGE THANK YOU to my family, my friends and my co-workers who have supported me along the way and listened to me ramble on about BJJ things they have no idea about, but means the world to me.

Thank you to King Kneebar, Priit Mihkelson, Chris "The Villain" Paines BJJ, Wim Deputter, Michael Currier, Charles Harriott, Francesco Fonte for heavily influencing my game over the past 5 years. Thank you for lighting a spark that has made learning both fun and challenging. You are all amazing teachers, and I am honored to have learned a fraction of your knowledge.

Thank you to Nation Athletic for supporting me and outfitting me in the most amazing no-gi gear. It is unmatched in quality, and I am so proud to promote it in any way I can.
Thank you to War Tribe Gear for making the best-fitting gis. It's like wearing a tuxedo on the mats.
Thank you to Eosin Panther for making the most beautiful belts. It is unbelievable to see how much care and craftsmanship goes into each belt. I have worn one since blue belt, and all these years later, I am still honored to have that around my waist.

Thank you all for joining me on this journey.

What lies down the road?
Hopefully training more often, but definitely never quitting, and always learning.
I will be releasing videos I have done blending knowledge of physiotherapy and BJJ on YouTube. The channel is called TAP!- The Art of Physiotherapy. It's a fun outlet, and another way for me to share knowledge with future generations of physiotherapists and martial artists alike.

Stay tuned!

See you on the mats,
Joel Kryczka

โšกInterferential Current Therapy (IFC) is an effective passive treatment Physiotherapists use to relieve pain.
โšก IFC machines carry a high frequency signal that penetrates through the skin deep down the underlying muscle tissues.
โšก Electrodes are placed on your skin, around the area that is in pain or injured. The IFC machine then transmits an electrical impulse which stimulates the nerves and tissue.

๐Ÿ’ข This is not painful! It can feel like a minor tickle on the skin, like a light contraction of the muscle. This technique has been proven to stimulate endorphins, which are the body's natural pain killers. It can create a self-healing process without the need of medication and it helps reduce pain, inflammation, curing edema and spasms.

In summary,

๐Ÿ‘‰ Reduces or eliminates your pain safely
๐Ÿ‘‰ Noticeable decrease in swelling and inflammation
๐Ÿ‘‰ Stimulates the natural hormones and help your body heal faster
๐Ÿ‘‰ Improves restricted movements and coordination
๐Ÿ‘‰ Effective passive treatment for chronic pain
