Schizophrenia is a mental illness. It causes people to lose touch with reality and sometimes makes it difficult for them to think and speak in an organized way. Schizophrenia affects about 1% of Canadians—that’s about 40,000 people in British Columbia. It is an often-misunderstood mental illness; with the right resources and supports, it can be managed.

"Mental Health" and "Mental Illness" are terms we often hear in conversation or see in the media, but the two are not interchangeable. "Mental Health" refers to a state of well-being that we all have. While we may sometimes feel down, upset, or experience feelings like stress, anxiety, or sadness, this does not mean that we have a mental illness.

🧠

"Mental Illness" refers to health problems that affect the way we think about ourselves, relate to others, and interact with the world around us. Mental illness affects our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Mental illness can disrupt a person's life or create challenges, but with the right support a person can get back on a path to recovery and wellness.
