QALSA aims to foster connections among law students and lawyers who self-identify as Asian, or those who wish to be an ally to the Asian legal community. We welcome law students wishing to engage in the Asian lawyers' community to join us. We are dedicated to promoting equity and inclusion at Queen's Law and the future legal market by hosting EDII, professional, and social events throughout the year. You are also strongly encouraged to join if you are interested in promoting equity and inclusion at law school!

Tired of having to stick to Wii Sports bowling? Feel the urge to socialize with your friends and colleagues? Your fingers itching for the smooth feeling of a bowling ball? We have the solution to all those problems.

Join QALSA as we take a breather before exams and have some fun bowling! It's only five dollars, and that will get you two whole games. The bowling alley is about a half hour walk from the Law Building. We will be heading out as a group but you are more than welcome to simply meet us there.

For the first time, the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers (FACL) is partnering with the Queen’s Asian Law Students’ Association (QALSA) to present: Navigating a Virtual Recruit: A Discussion About Best Practices and Diversity Initiatives. Join us for a conversation with student recruitment members, Jeff Costain (MAG – Newmarket Crowns’ Office), Kyle Elliot (Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP) and Haley Wong (Norton Rose Fulbright Canada LLP).

We discuss best virtual interview practices, tips for success in recruitment, and being confident in discussing one’s background with respect to diversity. Topics will also include communication over video and diversity initiatives in the workplace.

FACL Online Mentorship Program (Year-Long) – FACL 10/19/2020

The Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers is offering an Online Mentorship Program this year.

This program pairs FACL mentees with FACL's lawyer mentors who share similar identity factors in order to provide easy-to-use and ongoing access to a fulfilling mentorship relationship. The program runs from November 1, 2020 until March 30, 2021.

Applications are now open until Monday, October 26, 2020.

This Thursday, September 17th from 4-5:30PM, the Honourable David Lametti, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada is hosting a panel discussion about diversity on the federal bench.

The discussion will include justices and representatives from the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, Supreme Court of Nova Scotia, and Federal Judicial Advisory Committee for British Columbia. This forum will "bring the Minister together with lawyers and judges to share information and experiences, and to reflect on questions such as these in an effort to achieve a representative judiciary across the country."

Hello Queen's Law, the Queen's Asian Law Students Association Mentorship Program is now open for registration for 1L & 2L mentees! You can check out the different mentors and their experiences on their bios, each posted both in this group and in the Queen's Asian Law Students Association page.
We will also be hosting a virtual speed-mentoring event on Thursday, September 24th at 6PM, where you can be placed in up to 3 different break out rooms with different mentors to discuss their experiences, and why/how they became interested in the areas they want to practice. Registration for this event just requires you to fill out the mentorship registration form and indicate which rooms you'd like to be placed in.
We hope you'll participate in our program, and we're looking forward to meeting you!

Hello Queen's Law. The Queen's Asian Law Students' Association is happy to introduce Rachel Hung as an upper-year mentor for our mentorship program.This rounds out our roster and we'll be putting out the registration form to be matched on Monday.

Rachel hopes to practice litigation and health law, and was able to explore both interests as a summer student at the Toronto office of Fasken. You can read about her journey towards becoming a litigator, and her advice to 1Ls interested in litigation in her profile below.

Hello Queen's Law. The Queen's Asian Law Students' Association is happy to introduce Christina Tang as an upper-year mentor for our mentorship program.

Christina was the overall gold-scholar of the 1L Class last year. She explored various legal interests throughout her first-year of law school but was able to take a deep-dive into labour & employment law at Sherrard Kuzz LLP last summer. Alan just finished his first summer at the Calgary office of Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP. Alan was exposed to a wide variety of practices but developed a particular interest for corporate law at Osler. Hello Queen's Law. The Queen's Asian Law Students' Association is happy to introduce Li Zhu as an upper-year mentor for our mentorship program.

Li's journey the past few years has taken her from an undergraduate degree in science and math and working as a teacher for the Toronto District School Board to completing her first summer at the Toronto office of the full-service law firm Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP just last month. She has a particular interest in real estate law and experienced working in both the real estate and securities practice groups during her summer at Blakes. Hello Queen's Law. QALSA is kicking off its mentorship program for 2020-2021. We'll be posting bios to introduce you to our lineup of mentors over the course of this week. We've searched far and wide and assembled a roster of mentors with a broad variety of legal interests who are dying to meet you. Registration to be paired with a mentor will open early next week.

Our first first mentor is Iris Ngo. Iris is one of the top students in 2L receiving multiple course prizes and scholarships at the end of last year. She explored her interest in intellectual property law at an IP boutique this past summer. You can read about her experiences and advice for thriving in 1L in her bio below.
