The human body is designed to function effectively when exposed to abundant natural sunlight. Red light therapy, namely NIR treatment, is a safe, non-invasive and effective treatment option that offers pain relief. It also accelerates bone and tissue healing, increased blood flow all while decreasing inflammation to speed up muscle recovery. Red light is mainly absorbed by your skin to increase collagen production and for optimal skin health. NIR light penetrates deep within your body promoting muscle recovery.

It is very common for women who have undergone breast cancer surgery to also have lymph nodes removed. When this happens, the flow of lymphatic fluid through tissues is greatly disrupted and the lymph flow gets confused and doesn’t know which way to channel. This can cause a back up of fluid that affects the entire arm, side of the body and can even cause the face to swell. Other symptoms of lymphedema include, pain and feelings of pressure, sensory changes like numbness and tingling, and difficulty with fine motor tasks. These symptoms can be extremely uncomfortable and can also decrease movement and range of motion.
Lymphatic drainage massage is a very gentle and skilled technique to manually move this fluid and to strengthen and redefine the lymphatic channels to support ongoing natural flow. This allows the lymphatic system to function properly and act like a filter in the body and even strengthen immune function. When receiving regular lymphatic drainage massage, your body creates a muscle type of memory in the lymphatic system, which can aid in relearning pathways to filter out the fluid on its own. When I’m working on a client, they can frequently feel the fluid moving out, it is amazing! They report feeling lighter, being able to move better and can visually see a difference. Talk to your doctor and make sure you are clear to start lymphatic drainage massage as soon as possible.

Cervical Traction
This treatment helps relieve pain and stiffness in the neck muscles using a belt. Mainly used to relax the neck muscles, it is also used to treat bulging or herniated disks. It can help relieve pain from the joints and even spasms and sprains. Lying down, your therapist will gently pull your head away from your neck and hold this position for a period of time before slowly releasing. It creates space in between the vertebrae, relieves compression and allows the muscles to relax.

Did you know?

Your inner thighs, known collectively as your adductor muscles, can be connected to pelvic pain? They can also have a connection to such symptoms as bladder urgency and frequency in some cases! This is a common area that I address in pelvic treatments. Many patients remark: I would have never thought those were connected! The body is amazing.

In this video our Pelvic floor physiotherapist is using a connective tissue technique known as skin rolling in the adductors region to help reduce overall tension connected to the pelvic floor.

The achilles tendon at the back of the ankle is the strongest tendon in the human body. Partial and complete tears of this tendon are quite common and often occur during recreational sports. After the initial stages of healing and rehabilitation, it is important to rehabilitate the achilles tendon in a functional way that prepares the tendon for activities of normal daily living, and also towards higher level activity, depending on the goals of the client. Agility exercises can be a great way to prepare the body for accepting weight, pushing off and also great preparation for running. In this video here we see a patient working on lateral movements which also help with relearning how to initiate movement from the injured leg.

It has been trending on social media quite a bit lately but cupping therapy has been remarkably documented as early as 1500 BC. It is an ancient form of alternative medicine used in many parts of the world to help treat patients in pain. It is also used as a deep tissue massage in order to treat inflammation, increase blood flow and relaxation. Using a rubber hand pump, the therapist puts special glass or plastic cups that create suction over specific points on the body similar to acupuncture points.
Another great tool in the therapeutic toolbox! If you think that you could benefit from cupping, feel free to reach out for more information or to book an appointment.

Calf raises and your bladder….Huh? 🤔🤷‍♂️🤷🏻‍♀️
What is the relation, if any? Our bodies are incredible.
Certain nerve pathways can affect more than one area--the nerves that control the bladder also share a connection to the calf muscles.
Here’s the connection in practice:
Urinary urgency- is experiencing an overwhelming feeling to go to the washroom, that often happens in the absence of a full bladder. There are several reasons and treatment options for this concern, based on what the cause is. In the pelvic physio world (!)—one category within treatment options is bladder training techniques. When the urge to urinate comes on, calf raises may be one of the techniques we have patients do! So. Many. Connections.

Here are five tips to keep your Achilles tendons healthy:

1. Listen to your body! Practicing kinaesthetic awareness will help you determine how much activity or inactivity is enough
2. Dynamic warm-ups! This involves slow, rhythmic, and functional range of motion exercises progressing toward quicker and more complex movements.
3. Self-treatment! A regular routine of stretching and periodic self-applied soft tissue treatment like foam rolling can reduce muscle tensions and improve circulation and efficiency of your muscles.
4. Strengthening! Keep your Achilles healthy by incorporating arch strengthening and hip extensions strengthening into your routine.
5. Consuming collagen and vitamin C in our diet helps repair connective tissues in our body, and omega-3 rich foods help reduce oxidative stress on the body to decrease the slow ‘wear and tear’ effect of chronic inflammation.
