A new petition on Change.org, started by Crystal Wiebe, is calling for a redesign of Canadian currency to better reflect the country’s rich and diverse history. Titled “Change the Face of our Money,” the petition aims to replace the current images of monarchs with portraits of notable Canadians who have significantly contributed to the nation.
The petition argues that while Canada’s currency has traditionally featured the monarch, this practice no longer fully represents the breadth of the nation’s history.
Wiebe points out that Canada is home to many exceptional individuals – scientists, artists, humanitarians, and Indigenous leaders – who have positively shaped the country and deserve recognition. Featuring their images on Canadian money would not only pay tribute to their contributions, but also help cultivate a sense of national identity beyond ties to the monarchy.

TREATIES and ANNUITY PAYMENTS
It’s a yearly payment that is part of the treaty. It was negotiated, and it represents a monetary value for sharing the land in the Treaty 3 area. My first experience was getting a government cheque in the mail when I was a kid, then I asked my mother about it, and she said, “You’ll get this for the rest of your life.”

The Royal Canadian Mint has revealed a new $1 coin honouring one of Atlantic Canada’s most prolific authors on what would be her 150th birthday.
The coin honouring Lucy Maud Montgomery will pay tribute to her role in popularizing Prince Edward Island and Canada through her story of Anne of Green Gables, as well as her other pieces of work.
The artwork on the coin was done by P.E.I. artist Brenda Jones, and features a profile portrait of Montgomery around the time Anne of Green Gables was written, as well as her signature and the famous cat drawing she would often include when she signed her name.
Preservation? Treatment? Restoration?
As a collector, your role is that of the preserver. That’s it. Paper has a whole genre of professional conservation practice all to itself, and you should not be repairing your artifacts. And restoration? Well, that’s what you do with old sofas—certainly not bank notes.
Caring for your bank notes Collecting paper money seems simple enough. But, paper is delicate stuff and demands a gentle touch.
In November 284, Roman soldiers escorting the ailing emperor Numerian’s coach across Anatolia smelled a foul odor. When they opened its curtains, they found the emperor had been dead for some time. Suspicion fell on Lucius Flavius Aper, the Praetorian Prefect[1]. Diocles, commanding the imperial bodyguard, accused Aper of murdering the emperor and executed him on the spot. The legions immediately proclaimed Diocles as emperor, who renamed himself Diocletianus–usually written in English as “Diocletian”.

The 1920s: Economies fueled by optimism
The greater world of the 1920s was actually in pretty rough shape. Recovering from the First World War, Europe was flat on its back, and many nations had raised tariffs to protect their domestic production. World-wide, prices for most commodities were down, and global trade was in a slump.
Lessons from the Great Depression What the stock market crash of 1929 did was starkly reveal the weaknesses of economic systems that had evolved from the unregulated capitalism of the late 19th century.

One of the ways that the Museum grows its collection is by purchasing objects from private individuals or at public auctions. With careful planning, curators ensure that the National Currency Collection remains up to date with objects that tell important stories about economic and numismatic history, both in Canada and around the world.
New Acquisitions—2023 Edition It’s that time of the year again—the wrap-up of the Bank of Canada Museum’s annual acquisition program. Here are a few highlights of the latest additions to the National Currency Collection.

It was the first time in the Mint’s history that three artists jointly developed a design for a Canadian circulation coin. Each representing unique backgrounds and cultures, the artists brought their own perspectives and experiences to create beautiful and harmonious art. The rich expressions of cultures, traditions, and heritages that make up the design are drawn from a variety of inspirational sources, each unique to the artist.

As Canada’s monarch and head of state for 70 years, Queen Elizabeth II played an integral role in the life of our nation. Over the course of her reign, she made 22 official visits to Canada—more than any other Commonwealth nation—and joined in some of our greatest milestones.
This year, we revisit seven decades of history through a collection of commemorative coins, designed to honour the extraordinary life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II.
Since Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne in 1952, 48 countries have joined the Commonwealth.
Today’s Commonwealth includes 56 voluntary countries and together they work towards shared goals of prosperity, democracy and peace.
On this Commonwealth Day, we say thank you to Queen Elizabeth II for her 70-year reign as Head of the Commonwealth.
