I am very glad to hear that my kid's school received a visit from some Canadian soldiers recently. I think it is important to put real faces on these concepts. Talking about it is one thing. Meeting an actual person is another.
This past summer we also visited the Canadian War Museum. I found it a tremendously moving experience for so many reasons. If you live near Ottawa I would highly recommend this experience. I wasn't sure the kids would be that into it but they really were. I think that is in large part because of what they have learned at school.
We have to keep talking about these things. We must never forget.

The statistics on cyberbullying are staggering. We are talking prevalence numbers in the 60-80% range on some social media platforms. And just as with other types of harassment, it mostly goes unreported.
Talk to your kids frequently and openly about these things. Teach them early to have firm boundaries around how they wish to be treated. And most importantly, keep the lines of communication as open as possible.
Cyberbullying: Twenty Crucial Statistics for 2024 | Security.org Cyberbullying occurs on every social media platform, but mostly on YouTube, Snapchat, TikTok, and Facebook. Kids of all ages become victims of cyberbullying, but the risk increases as they grow older. Cyberbullying is more prevalent than most people think. Read our article on 5 shocking cyberbullyin...
I always feel highly honoured when people send their family members to see me. You know someone trusts you when they tell their mother to come see you. In some cases I have treated three generations of the same family!
Recently I had the privilege of seeing a young person whose mom had been trying to get her to have some physiotherapy treatment for some time. She had been unwilling to do so until her older brother spoke up. I treat him, and he feels so much better that he convinced her.
Let me tell you, a lot of adults don't have the awareness of changes in their body that this kid does. I am so glad his sister came in.
Ah, the teen drama. Sometimes it's hard to remember what it was like at the age when everything seemed like the end of the world. I think it's important to normalize these big reactions from teen brains that are in transition. Explaining to them that it is not their "fault" and that their actual physiology is part of the issue can be helpful. And boundaries. Lots of healthy boundaries for everyone.
The Emotional Brain Is in Transition | Multiplying Connections Teens often use the word ‘drama’ to describe what their lives feel like. It is this drama that can make working with teens challenging. You can promote a more peaceful adolescence and communicate more effectively with your students and patients by understanding how the teen brain thinks. Teens p...
This fall my daughter started having to find her own way to school on public transit for the first time. I had walked her through the logistics of how to do this and thought she was okay, but apparently she was not.
This caused her a lot of anxiety. She tried to deal with this through avoidance and zoning out on her phone until a few days before school started when she had a meltdown.
We sat down to talked about it, using what this article refers to as problem-focussed coping. We knocked off her specific concerns one by one and her anxiety level came down several notches to a more manageable level.
It's important to realize that sometimes kids this age are struggling without us knowing. For this reason it's important to be proactive in teaching them coping strategies.

Last week I saw a four month old baby with a common issue that should have been addressed in the first few weeks. Because it wasn't, now it is quite severe and we have quite a hole to dig ourselves out of.
I find it so frustrating when things like this happen. We need to do a better job of educating parents about what to look for in their newborn.
Please help by sharing this article with anyone you know who may be entertaining the idea of having children. These are simple things parents can easily check and then seek help for. And parents, if you see these things and are brushed off by a medical professional, then go directly to someone such as a physiotherapist or osteopath with experience treating babies. Don't wait. The cost is too high.

Simple Screening for Common Conditions in Newborns - M.A.P. Physiotherapy I thank my lucky stars every day that I am a physiotherapist and that I have paediatric experience. If I didn’t then things would have turned out a whole lot differently for both my children.
In January of 2020 I started a daily meditation practice. Prior to that time I had taken meditation classes and done it here and there, but it was then that I decided to make a daily commitment. Little did I know how much I would need it in the months to come.
Over the years my practice has evolved and I have come to understand more about what it is and what it isn't. For those of you who are still convinced you can't do it, this article is a good place to start.
Walking in the woods and communing with nature IS meditation. Stopping when you're feeling your stress mounting and taking a few mindful breaths IS meditation. One minute of settling into your body can be of huge benefit.
Try it. You just may like it.

I consider myself fortunate that my kids generally enjoy school, but I know that could change at any time. I found it interesting to learn in this article that school refusal doesn't always look like a lot of missed school days. It can also look like being late often or leaving early. As with everything, getting to the root cause of the problem is essential.

Just because it's common doesn't make it normal. Why are you still putting up with that pain?
This article has some really helpful information in it, whether you knowingly have transgender people in your life or not. It never ceases to amaze me though, how people don't do the simplest things, probably because it just never occurred to them.
This includes things like using gender neutral language. I still cannot believe how often I hear store clerks saying things like, "Have a nice day sir/ma'am."
What have you got to gain by putting the sir/ma'am on the end of that sentence? Absolutely nothing. And what have you got to lose by using it? Everything, including potentially the customer for good.
Take some time to examine things you do and say. I think we can all improve on this.

You see babies? Why??
I get this question often when clients see a baby coming or going from the clinic. Babies are sometimes born with tightness in their bodies that causes asymmetry. This asymmetry can result in all kinds of issues now and later in life and needs to be addressed.
One of the signs that a baby is asymmetrical is a noticeable difference in how well they breast feed on one side versus the other. If this is happening to you then it should be checked out as soon as possible. The sooner we catch it the easier it is to fix.
And fix it we can. Book here:

Halloween costumes can be so expensive! On top off it all, I find a lot of them to be inappropriate for so many reasons. I remember the first time I took the kids to a Halloween pop-up store, completely ignorant of what the prices would be like. Having already promised them I would buy them something, I was committed. Never again. Our go-to now is Value Village. The last few years the kids have either chosen used costumes or pieced together something with $20 and their imagination.
I believe that positive role models are essential for kids. My children are very blessed to have many kind, compassionate, and loving people in their lives. Role models don't have to be someone they spend a lot of time with. They can be a kind and patient neighbour, a friend's parent, or even a store clerk they see regularly.
You never know who you are influencing. Little eyes are watching you more often than you realize. I just wish some parents at the arena thought about this. But don't even get me started on that topic.
Benefits of Positive Role Models for Youth Development - New Pathways for Youth As kids grow, they search for direction, motivation, and encouragement. Positive role models can have a major effect on youth development.
After all these years, I still find it aggravating when I connect the dots to several issues someone is experiencing and their jaw drops open like I've just performed a miracle. Why does this irritate me? Because it shouldn't be so rare.
I long for the day that treating people as whole beings will be commonplace. I dream of all health care practitioners seeing mind-body-spirit as inextricably interdependent. I've always been someone who marches to their own drum so I guess it's no surprise that I ended up here. The path has been long and windy but so worth it.

Our Story
We treat people, not body parts.
If you believe in addressing your whole body rather than piecemeal parts, then come in and see us. In order to do the things you love, you need all parts of you to function as efficiently as possible in harmony. If some parts are not able to do their job, others will have to work harder to pick up the slack. The overworking parts will protest to call your attention to the fact that something is wrong, but they are not the cause of the problem.
At M.A.P. Physiotherapy we see the forest and the trees. We address the big picture by stepping back to look at the forest first. We listen to the forest, for it has a wisdom of its own. Without doing this you will never find the right trees to deal with – and they are not the ones screaming the loudest.
At our clinic you will see the physiotherapist one-on-one for your entire appointment time, each and every time. We believe only a professional can see the truth in the forest.
