Words from Honduras! And from Lucila Rodriguez, 75 years old, from the CIAL (Local Agricultural Research Committee) of Palmichal Fatima who participates actively in the preservation of Creole variety of local endemic paisano beans.
She advises us to eat local and healthy foods.
She also says that at home she only cooks what she and her husband Gertrudis produce on their plot.
She mentions that the flavor of this type of food is more genuine and tastier. Her joy and motivation are very contagious, and she is very healthy as well.

It was fascinating to learn that buffaloes, which are considered very dangerous in some parts of the world, are reared in other regions for their milk and meat, providing essential nutrition to many households.

Our Program Manager, Isabelle, is currently in Nepal, visiting our partner Women for Peace and Democracy Nepal and connecting with participants of the RENEW program supported by Global Affairs Canada. Through the development of women’s cooperatives, the RENEW program is educating and empowering women to exercise their human and socioeconomic rights, strengthening economic independence, and cultivating a community of sisterhood and support. We love hearing about the incredible impact of this program. Here’s what some of the women have said about their involvement:
Santoshi Adhikari: “I am happy to be in the group as we women members meet and share about our issues and share our joy too. I have been doing animal husbandry. I have two buffaloes and a cow and I sell 10 to 15 litres of milk every day and earn a profit of Rs. 30, 000 to 35, 000 monthly. In our household, we have a diversity of vegetables too. Through the profits earned, I have been able to send my children to school and able to take care of household expenses.”
Bhawani Pathak: “When I was sick and was not able to work in my field, the women members helped me to plough my land, plant seeds and harvest them.”
Laxmi Pathak (Chair): “We advocated for a school bus that could bring our children to the school. Before, the children had to walk to school and some got lost; now, we have a bus. This is a result of our initiative.”
We are excited to share that our partner, Afar Pastoralist Development Association (APDA), is celebrating their 30th anniversary! For 30 years APDA has contributed to the development and well-being of the Afar people. Their projects support women and children, including mobile health and vaccination, water provision and harvesting, maternal and children's health activities, education, and relief work in times of crisis such as drought.
This past year, with support from World Accord, APDA has achieved several exciting milestones, including:
•training 25 women in horticulture, and 25 women in income generation
•training two environmental scouts who provide daily mentorship and support to the 50 women, as well as raise supportive awareness in the community
•acquisition of tools, seeds and seedlings, empowering women to grow and harvest vegetables and fruit trees
•25 women trained in income generation were each given 5,000 ETB to start-up and they now have a small commodity shop in the community
•of the food harvest, 80% was consumed, and 20% was sold locally within the community
We are so proud of the exciting work APDA is leading, and are so very grateful to our community that has contributed to World Accord, allowing us to help fund this critical work.
Happy 30th anniversary APDA!
