We have a special guest instructor joining us this weekend, July 13-14, in the Hayloft!! Kate Atherley, knitting numbers guru, will be visiting us from Toronto for two days of fabulous learning opportunities.

Whether you're a a more casual knitter looking to add to your repertoire or an experienced one looking to refine your craft, you'll definitely learn something new.

Love knitting socks? Liberate yourself from pattern books! Make a sock to meet your own unique needs, for your size foot, and in your choice of yarn in "Custom Fit Socks"

Knit Fair Isle all the time but never a cardigan? It may well be the scariest thing you can do with your knitting... taking a pair of scissors to it! Steeking – cutting a piece of knitting – is on many knitters’ “bucket lists”, and Kate's steeking class is any easy way to learn about it, and to take the fear out of it.

Math for Knitters covers Everything you need to know to figure out all those tricky numbers issues you encounter in your knitting. Level up your knitting brain power!

Next Steps in Brioche is knitters with a little bit of experience with Brioche knitting. We'll focus on building skills and confidence with the technique including increases, decreases, tidy edges, and fixing the dreaded Brioche mistake.

All the class details, and how to register, can be found here on our website:

🚨 NEW SHOP SAMPLE ALERT 🚨 I’m having trouble parting with this one!

This is the Joni by in one of our latest fibres in the shop, Antigone. It is a sport weight 100% linen and it was a joy to knit up during the warmer days we’ve been having! Such a wonderful fibre to wear, so drapey and cooling on the skin! It is also machine washable, and GASP you can put it in the dryer too! Just a little tip, make sure to weave in your ends very well, and they will pop out otherwise!

Pop into the shop before 4pm to touch it for yourself!

Here’s my (Shaelyn’s) addition to the unofficial Unbeknownst KAL, where we are knitting any of the Tessellated patterns by Andrea Mowry. I am doing the best version: the main colour is yarn from my stash, but the accent colours are Zauberball Edition 3 in Beach Cafe & Berenice in Brume. I love a blue and orange combo and am so excited to wear this when it’s done!

Feel free to join us and tag the shop in your posts!

We have four spaces left in our Lace Knitting 101 class tomorrow, Saturday the 13th at 1pm. What better way to spend another rainy, gloomy day than learning something new? 🌧

This class is designed for adventurous beginners wanting to learn something new, or more advanced knitters who have never tried lace patterns before. We'll use Kate Davies' engaging and deceptively simple Footfall Shawl pattern to learn the foundational skills of lace knitting and top down triangular shawl shaping. The class is a hands-on learning experience with lots of time for knitting together. You'll leave us with your lace shawl project well on the way.

Say hello to Imbue Sport, the newest thing for Spring!
https://needlesinthehay.ca/products/imbue-sport

This light weight addition to Brooklyn Tweed's Imbue yarn family works up wonderfully in patterns from fi*****ng to DK weight, with a gorgeous drape & soft, plush feel.

Inspired by nature, twelve vibrant heathered shades shimmer with lively flecks of color. 🎨

I asked Natalie to make the Grist Pullover shop sample pictured, and here's what she had to say about the experience:

"When Deanna asked if I was interested in knitting a shop sample with Imbue Sport I took no time at all to say “yes, I’d love to!” I was home recovering from knee replacement surgery and was keen to take on a project. A new Brooklyn Tweed product can only be a good thing, right?

In retrospect I have realized that my decision to do this was an enormous mistake! The wool was so soft and bouncy. It had amazing stitch definition. The texture just jumped from the needles to create Jared Flood’s Grist Pullover. And the Hummingbird colour was absolutely delicious.

Why a mistake? The Imbue Sport is such a pleasure to work with that I’m just not sure I can ever enjoy knitting with any other wool again. Ever."

I am really enjoying playing around with this new worsted weight organic peruvian pima cotton, Sami XL from . The Sami DK is so well loved they made it bigger!

This yarn is silky soft and drapey with a sparkling sheen. ✨️ the colour palette really pops. I fell in love instantly with this tulip colourway.

Give Sami XL a try for quick spring and summer tops. I'm working on the Leaf top pattern by .

Our Yarn Story

Hello and welcome to Needles in the Hay! I’m Deanna Guttman, and I’ve been the shop owner since 2016. The shop was founded in 2010 by Bridget Allin, and I’m pleased to be able to continue and expand on her vision for this lovely little yarn store in downtown Peterborough!

Needles in the Hay is a place where you can find high quality natural fibres in a myriad of beautiful colours, and socialize with people who share your passion for fibre arts. We work hard to bring you the best selection of high quality yarns at multiple price points and we search high and low to make sure you’re getting the best products at the best value. We have a special passion for wool, but you’ll also find alpaca, silk, linen and more at the shop. We’re a Brooklyn Tweed Destination shop, and some of our other favourites include The Fibre Co., Blue Sky Fibers, mYak, June Cashmere and more!

I’m an avid knitter myself who loves learning new techniques and experimenting with different construction methods. Sweaters are my passion and I always seem to have a new pullover or cardi on the needles. Cables and lace are my happy place, the more complicated the chart the better! I hope you’ll come visit me and the staff at the shop and fall in love with some yarn!
