Savyn, together with the Ben Dunkley Labs at Sick Kids Research Institute, are conducting a research study on how digital online therapy using Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) can help reduce Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Many studies have shown the efficacy of using EMDR to reduce PTSD symptoms in individuals. Savyn has digitized the process of EMDR with the help and feedback of licensed EMDR therapists.
We are inviting motor vehicle accident survivors to participate in our study. If selected, the individuals will have access to therapy and require a commitment of approximately 45 minutes per week for 8 weeks.
The study is conducted under the supervision of Principal Investigator Dr Benjamin Dunkley, and Dr Don Edwards, a licensed EMDR practitioner and psychotherapist. The study has passed approval by the Research Ethics Board at Sick Kids.
What does trauma informed care look like?
Trauma can be experienced as several incidents in a personâs life or as a single life-altering experience. Adverse childhood experiences, in particular, can lead to complex trauma.Complex trauma can show up as symptoms of hyperarousal, avoidance of the trauma, re-experiencing traumatic memories and loss of self-regulation mechanisms. When caregivers and mental health service providers work on understanding a personâs core life experiences in relation to the traumatic experience, rather than solely only on their symptoms, the individual is guided towards a more complete and holistic healing process.
Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) builds on this concept, and strives to create a culture where holistic care is incorporated into general mental health practices. TIC was categorized into 4 major pillars.
1.Being actively aware of the individual circumstances surrounding the trauma and limiting generalizations wherever possible.
2.Emphasizing the physical, psychological and emotional safety of the individual throughout the treatment of the trauma.
3.Using approaches that re-establish a sense of control in the individual throughout the healing process.
4.Focusing on reinforcing the strengths of the individual rather than solely diminishing negative associations.
Savyn has adopted these TIC guidelines throughout the development process of our platform. TIC pillars are at the forefront of our mission to deliver the most complete care possible to those that need it.

Healing is a long, slow process that will be experienced in various ways as traumatic stress can be completely unique for every person. It is not a linear fashion as there are steps forward and steps back in the process; remember to not judge yourself harshly.
Here are common signs your mental health is improving:
- Youâre getting better at naming your feelings
- You recognize, label, and dismantle triggers
- You respect and set boundaries
- Youâre much less sensitive to rejection
- Youâre now setting personal goals

Set up New Yearâs resolutions that benefit your mental health. Assess your goals: How are they working for you? Are they beneficial? Do some of them need to be changed?
The inability to follow yearly resolutions may come from hypercriticism and lack of self-compassion. It is important to practice self-kindness and mindfulness while setting up goals and resolutions, and remember that they must be objective, realistic and measurable. Small, attainable goals are the key to build your confidence and help you achieve long-term goals.
Self-compassionate people tend to handle failure in a healthier way rather than slowing down their potential. They know how to improve from their mistakes and are less likely to experience and engage in self-sabotaging behaviours.
Failure does not suggest lack of skill and talent but a defining feature of the human experience. Practicing self-compassion leads us to define failure as an opportunity for learning and growth. A concept we can apply while assessing our New Yearâs resolutions.

Managing trauma during the holidays.
Many people are taking time off and gathering for the holidays. This can be a difficult time for some people, since this season can bring grief or sorrow to the surface as weâre reminded of upsetting events that occurred around this time of year or feel the absence of a lost loved one in a way thatâs more pronounced. Managing grief, sorrow or traumatic stress around a time where people are expected to be joyful is a slow process and a job for more than one person.
Here are some tips on how to manage difficult emotions:
1. Honour your loved one the best way you can.
2.Scale back on holiday tasks knowing itâs okay and important to take your own time.
3.Accept whatever emotions arise.
4. Take time for you to ground.

If you need to stay away from people, places and situations that trigger hurtful thoughts and memories, take your time. It may be needed and helpful in times of stress. But, using avoidance as your only strategy can cause more problems than expected. Such symptoms canât be avoided all the time, and trying to avoid them may cause you to close yourself off to opportunities, create anxiety or feel even more restrained by your traumatic experience.
Talking about your feelings can be a way to manage difficult thoughts and emotions. It takes time to recover emotionally and rebuild your life but healing is possible. Practicing talking about them, to the right person, is a good first step to manage your stress and start on the road to recovery.

Reconnecting with your inner child is important and hereâs why. When faced with difficulties in our adulthood that remind us of traumatic childhood memories, our inner child often gets activated. It negatively affects our decisions, choices and emotions. The concept of an inner child came from the psychiatrist Carl Jung, who described a child archetype in his work. He linked this internal child to past experiences and memories of innocence, playfulness, and creativity, along with hope for the future.
Through a child's lens, everything instantly becomes reality as their minds can be highly fragile; they can easily be influenced by what may seem like a minor event. Revisiting and managing our traumas we experienced as a child allows us to become our own parents as we work closely with our inner child.
We have to learn how to consciously process and integrate those challenging memories in order to manage our inner child. Nowadays, many schools of therapy embrace the idea of inner child work. Itâs a form of therapy that consciously works with the inner child within us, since our childhood memories affect who we are today. Reconnecting with your child self can help you regain a sense of joy, wonder and a form of self-care. Despite not hearing or seeing them clearly, recognizing their existence can lead to a stronger, more complete sense of self.

November is . A month dedicated to raising awareness of how signs and symptoms of mental health conditions may present themselves differently in men, and to normalize conversations about mental health issues to reduce the stigma that often prevents men from seeking support. Men are 3 times more likely to die by su***de than any other genders and they are also the demographic that least likely to seek help. We need to talk about the range of symptoms men experience to recognize them in the people we care about. Some common symptoms include anger, irritability, aggressiveness, feeling anxious, loss of interest in work or family, overeating, undereating, oversleeping and undersleeping.
Men experience symptoms differently; being educated regarding such topics is important in supporting them. As the month of November ends, this is a reminder to continue to spread awareness as talking SAVES lives. It is okay to feel vulnerable, to ask for help, to show emotions, and to speak up. If you are feeling alone or anxious, remember there are people who understand and recognize your emotions.
