House of Commons on Promoting and Encouraging Intergenerational Volunteering (Shared on our August Digest)
The House of Commons Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities, developed this report which considers the different ways that the government can promote and encourage intergenerational volunteerism between seniors and youth. It examines the individual and societal benefits of intergenerational volunteering experiences as well as barriers in participating in or offering these experiences. Among their recommendations are better ways facilitate intergenerational volunteerism in Canada, including through the development of a national volunteer action strategy; creation and dissemination of data on intergenerational volunteerism; investment in intergenerational volunteering through new or existing programming; support for volunteers; and increased awareness about intergenerational volunteerism programs.
Futureproofing the Community Workforce Initiative (Shared on our August Digest)
The Community Workforce Initiative of the Canadian Center for Nonprofit Digital Resilience aims to strengthen digital skills within nonprofit organizations and has just published two groundbreaking reports.
The first report, Canada's Nonprofit Tech Workforce, provides insights into the size and composition of the tech workforce as well as pay disparities within the nonprofit sector. Among other key findings, the report shows that nonprofits have a shortage of tech workers. While other industries have on average 5% of their workforce in tech occupations, less than 1% of workers in nonprofits are doing work that is classified as tech work. The research also highlights that tech workers in the nonprofit sector earn on average more than $30,000 less annually than tech workers in other industries. In addition, Indigenous Peoples, women, and visible minorities are all paid less for tech work than other workers.
The second report, The Demand for Digital Skills in Canada's Nonprofit Sector, explores the state of digital skills required in the nonprofit sector. Among other interesting findings from this report, there is evidence that nonprofit jobs are adapting to digital skill trends.

Environics' Reconciliation and Relations with Indigenous Peoples Report (2024) - Shared on our August Digest
This work delves into how Canadians view relations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people and how the process of reconciliation is unfolding. Confederation of Tomorrow surveys have been addressing this topic since 2019, and the 2024 survey provides a fresh update on public attitudes from both Indigenous and non-Indigenous perspectives, and how they have evolved over time.
The research reveals that over the past year, there has been a small but measurable improvement in Canadians’ perspective on relations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people and reconciliation, building on a similar shift over the previous year. An increasing proportion of Canadians describe relations between the two groups as good, which reflects the most positive assessment since 2020 when this question was first asked. Most Canadians continue to be optimistic about the future of reconciliation, in terms of seeing meaningful progress in their lifetimes. On these questions, Indigenous Peoples are notably more positive and optimistic than non-Indigenous Canadians, and this gap has widened since 2023.
