Our amazing board member, Bulgan Orgilsaikhan, received sight-saving treatment from Orbis as a child. Now, she's returning to her home country of Mongolia aboard the Flying Eye Hospital - this time as an Orbis volunteer!

The Orbis Flying Eye Hospital has just landed in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, for a three-week ophthalmic training project. ✈👀🇲🇳

The plane touched down in stormy conditions, with Captain Cyndhi Berwyn calling it “one of the toughest approaches” in her long career.

Ulananbaatar is notorious for its high altitude and strong winds, but the team also faced storms, turbulence, and low visibility as they made their descent. Captain Berwyn was given up-to-the-minute information by the Orbis flight team and was able to guide the plane without issue.

While the weather might seem ominous, a former Orbis patient from Mongolia and current Orbis Canada Board Member, Bulgan Orgilsaikhan, who was on board the aircraft as it landed, says there’s an expression in Mongolian that goes, “The destined person comes with the thunderstorm.” A sign of good things to come!

This three-week training project will mark the Flying Eye Hospital’s ninth visit to Mongolia, with the first taking place in 1989 and most recent in 2018.

For more than 30 years, FedEx has played a critical role in helping Orbis achieve its global mission. Since 2009, FedEx has been the National Event Sponsor and host of our annual Plane Pull for Sight fundraising event in Canada. Together, we’ve raised over $2.3 million to help create a world where everyone can access the eye care they need to thrive.

For FedEx and their team members across Canada and all around the world, connecting people and possibilities goes far beyond their business. Ha, a hard-working farmer from Vietnam who lived with poor vision for years because of cataracts. 05/22/2024

This is Ha, a hard-working farmer from Vietnam who lived with poor vision for years because of cataracts. Ha lives in Lai Chau province, a remote region of Vietnam where access to quality medical care is scarce.

After years of putting up with poor vision, Ha was persuaded by her brother to attend a vision screening at a local clinic. She was then referred to Tan Uyen District Health Center and eventually to Lai Chau General Hospital, where she was diagnosed with cataracts and offered sight-restoring surgery at no cost to her — all thanks to Orbis supporters.
