As part of Indigenous History Month, June 21st marks National Indigenous Peoples Day. We invite you to take a look at our current Reading Room celebrating Indigenous Culture and would like to highlight this recent publication by the Museum of Anthropology which can be found in the selection.

"Where the Power Is: Indigenous Perspectives on Northwest Coast Art' is a landmark volume that brings together over eighty contemporary Indigenous knowledge holders with extraordinary works of historical Northwest Coast art, ranging from ancient stone tools to woven baskets to carved masks and poles to silver jewelry.

First Nations Elders, artists, scholars, and other community members visited the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia to connect with these objects, learn from the hands of their ancestors, and share their thoughts and insights on how these belongings transcend the category of "art" or "artifact" to embody vital ways of knowing and being in the world.

Texts by the authors sketch the provenance of the objects, and, in dialogue with the commentators, engage in critical and necessary conversations around the role of museums that hold such collections.

The voices within are passionate, enlightening, challenging, and humorous. The commentators speak to their personal and family histories that these objects evoke, the connections between tangible and intangible culture, and how this “art” remains part of Northwest Coast Indigenous peoples’ ongoing relationships to their territories and political governance. Accompanied by over 300 contemporary and historical photographs, this is a vivid and powerful document of Indigenous experiences of reconnection, reclamation, and return." - Publisher

There's some wonderful symbiosis between these sculptures from Parvin Peivandi's ceramics classes and our collections, including our plants! (There's tonnes of talent too, so lookout, Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down!)
🏺
Both Parvin's foundation and second year ceramics classes have worked with clay as an organic material and metaphor of earth to convey the effects of climate change on our bodies and other creatures, and the results are quite impressive.
🌏
Meanwhile, Sophie Gaur's Industrial Design class explore pregnancy and childbirth, addressing issues of agency, over-medicalization and problematic social narratives in their class exhibition 'Material Anatomies'.
🫃🏽
As with Parvin's displays, 'Material Anatomies' offers lots of food for thought, and showcases some amazing talent and creativity!
🙏🏼
Thanks very much to Sophie, Parvin, Priyanka and their classes for sharing their work in the library space. This work will be up until Friday March 15th.

This November, the ECU Library will once again be participating in Climate Action Month.

Climate Action Month is a province-wide initiative organized by the BC Library Association and is intended "to raise awareness, answer our communities' growing needs, and articulate clearly that libraries are places to connect people and access resources on climate change".

This year we will be displaying a large selection of climate action related resources at the entrance of library, all hand selected by ECU library staff and instructors. We will also be sharing information on where you kind find - and drop off - various materials on campus (ie. wood, textiles, metals, etc.)

There will be a number of events and exhibitions happening in the library as well, including a 'Co-existing with Coyotes' talk with Urban Wildlife Programs Coordinator Dezirae Barreto on November 16th, and an emergency preparedness workshop with Emily Carr's Leslie Urquhart on November 30.

Meanwhile, two separate class exhibitions will explore the documentation of non-human life and the repair of industrial products.

Finally, we will be offering a new, updated version of our sustainability bingo! Pick up a risographed bingo card at our library service desk while supplies last, or find a downloadable pdf version on our website, and enter to win some fun eco-friendly prizes!

More details about Climate Action Month events and programs can be found in our linktree, and keep checking our Instagram throughout November for updates and sustainability tips.

Every month we receive more new library items than we can feature on social media - so we've started doing monthly roundups that feature a larger variety of our new books, eBooks, films, and more! You can find these roundups on the Latest Update section on the Library website (at the bottom of the page), or keep an eye out for the ECU Community Update emails that go out on Tuesdays.

The roundups include links to the items within our catalogue, which means if you see a new book that you're interested in, you can place it on hold right away! Featured online resources will indicate how to log in to view them, and let you know if there are simultaneous user limits.

Some months we might feature more eBooks, some months more graphic novels. It depends on what new items are on order!
