Sleep plays an important role in maintaining our health and well being. A restorative, good quality sleep is essential for healthy physical and mental function.

Cardiovascular and metabolic function, learning and memory are all impacted by sleep. On average, adults (ages 18-64 ) should be getting 7-9 hours of sleep per night.

Getting a good nights sleep can be difficult. So here are some tips to help you fall asleep and wake up well rested. 🌞

💤 Avoid screen time (TV, phone, computer) within two hours of bedtime

💤 Keep your bedroom dark and quiet

💤 Avoid strenuous exercise, caffeinated drinks, heavy meals and alcohol 2 hours within bedtime

💤 Maintain a sleep schedule (even on weekends!) by going to bed at the same time every night. This will help to regulate your sleep cycle.

💤 Avoid daytime naps or limit them to 30 minutes

💤 Try meditation or breathing exercises before bedtime to help your mind and body relax.

Sweet dreams!! 😊

Our mental health needs as much care and attention as our physical health does. On a daily basis we face many mentally exhausting situations, some more than others. Whether it be an emotionally demanding job, family stress, postpartum stress, busy work schedule, anxiety or overthinking; it takes a toll on our mental health and in turn our physical health.

It's important to take a step back from our busy and stressful lives to focus on our mental health and self care. Just like incorporating physical exercise into your daily or weekly routine, try to include self care into your schedule. Here are some easy 20 minute self care ideas you can incorporate into your day.

Take 20 minutes out of your day to:

✨ Color, paint or draw
✨ Read a book or write your thoughts
✨ Meditate
✨ Listen to music or dance
✨ Go for a walk
✨ Call a loved one or friend
✨ Spend time outdoors

Take care of yourself ❤️

It’s almost summer! ☀️That means it’s time to get those gardens looking colorful and full of life! As exciting and rewarding gardening may be, it can be a physically demanding and straining activity at times, which may increase your risk of injury and pain. So here are some helpful tips to help prevent aches and pains while gardening!🌱

1. Warm up🌡️ – After a long winter, you just want to jump right in and get that garden summer ready! But wait! Prepare your body for the activity by warming up your muscles with a short 10-15-minute walk around your neighborhood.

2. Stretch 🏋️– Follow the warmup with gentle neck, back, leg and arm stretches. The stretches should not be straining or cause pain. Try to incorporate frequent stretch breaks while working outdoors.

3. Take a break and hydrate💧 – Take frequent breaks while working and give your body a rest. Aim to take a 10 minute break every half hour. Remember to grab a water bottle and hydrate while you rest!

4. Carefully lift and carry💪 – When moving heavy bags of soil or mulch, try to use a wheelbarrow or cart. Try to keep the load small and light, so it’s easier to lift and carry. If you have to lift heavy items, ask for a helping hand!

5. Change it up ↔️– Avoid holding one position for extended periods. Alternate between different tasks/jobs instead of focusing on one job at a time.

Enjoy the beautiful weather and happy gardening! 💐😊

Pregnancy pillows 🤰

Pregnancy pillows help ensure chiropractic treatment is comfortable for mama. The pillows comfortably support the weight of mama and her belly. They are designed with an oval-shaped hollow center, allowing mama to lie face down on the treatment table, while having her belly supported by the pillows. Lying on these pillows (and being able to lie face down!) is usually mama's favourite part of treatment! 😊

Many women experience back pain during pregnancy and many suffer from discomfort during activity and sometimes even at rest. Weight gain during pregnancy and the increase in frontal load as the baby grows and uterus expands, can alter our posture and biomechanics, as we change the way we move, sleep and stand during pregnancy. This can cause discomfort and pain for many women, particularly in the lower back. The added weight and postural changes can also cause pain and discomfort in the pelvis, legs, mid back or neck.

How can a chiropractor help?

Chiropractors can provide gentle, safe and effective conservative care to relieve aches and pains, and help improve mobility and function during pregnancy. A conservative care plan can include; spinal manipulation, joint mobilization, soft tissue therapy, as well as exercise recommendations to help reduce and/or prevent pain associated with postural changes during pregnancy.

Let's talk posture! 👩‍💻

As working from home and virtual/online schooling has become a routine part of our lives, posture (and not to mention neck and back pain) has become a growing area of concern for many. Over the past few months, many people have come to me concerned about their working posture and how to improve it.

So here are some tips to help improve your posture while working/studying!

1. Keep your head upright over your shoulders, with your ears in line with your shoulders. Try to avoid leaning your head forward to look at your computer screen or device.

2. Sit with your shoulders back and down, to avoid rounded shoulders.

3. If possible, invest in an office chair with a backrest that supports the natural curves of the low back.

4. Adjust your computer screen height so the top of the screen is roughly at eye level.

5. Keep your feet flat on the floor or supported on a footrest.

6. Keep work materials and mouse within arms' reach to avoid reaching.

Happy working/studying! 😊

Wishing everyone a merry christmas and happy new year! Stay safe this holiday season! ❤️🎄🎅

12/01/2020

It's December 1st and here comes the snow! 🌨️

As we enter the winter season, it's important to prepare for the changes this season brings. Such as winter driving 🚘 (slow and steady!) and shoveling snow! 🙈

Shoveling snow is a common cause of back pain in the winter season. Here are some snow shoveling tips to help keep your back safe this winter!

❄️ Don't catapult the snow! - push the snow to the side, then lift and gently throw.

❄️ Use a light shovel - buy a shovel that is lightweight and comfortable for you to use.

❄️ One layer at a time - shovel frequently throughout snowfall, so the snow doesn't pile up and become too heavy.

❄️ Don't do the twist! - when moving snow, use your feet to change direction instead of twisting your upper body.

❄️ Bend your knees - keep your back straight and bend your knees when lifting.

❄️ Take a break - remember to listen to your body and take a break when you feel tired.

Stay safe this winter season, and happy shoveling!

From raking the leaves in the yard, to clearing out your summer garden, the seasonal cleanup can put a significant amount of stress on your back. Here are some tips to help prevent back pain and keep your back safe this fall season!

1. Warm up🌡️ – Prepare your body for the stressful task by warming up your muscles with a short 10-15-minute walk around your neighborhood.
2. Stretch 💪– Follow the warmup with gentle back, leg and arm stretches. Try to incorporate frequent stretch breaks while working outdoors.
3. Ask for help 🙋‍♀️– get a neighbor, friend or family member to help you get the job done.
4. Take a break ⏱️– remember to listen to your body and take a break when you feel tired
5. Bend your knees 🏋️‍♀️– When lifting bags of leaves, keep your back straight and bend your knees. Try to keep the load small and light, so it’s easier to lift and carry.

Happy Autumn!

Do I need a referral from my doctor to see a chiropractor? 🤔

No. In Canada, chiropractors are legislated as primary contact healthcare professionals. Therefore, you can consult a chiropractor directly, without a referral from your medical doctor. 😊
