Bad idea ๐ Show off to your son by cracking his new rebuildable dinosaur egg over your head like a neanderthal ๐๐ค

๐ง THE SURVIVORS' FLAG ๐ง
It stands as a tribute to honor those who endured residential schools and to acknowledge the profound impact on lives and communities within Canada. It embodies a collective effort of Survivors from diverse regions across the country who were consulted in its creation.
The discovery of mass unmarked graves on former residential school grounds in 2021 was met with grief, prompting a widespread desire from the public to show respect and remembrance. In response, Survivors engaged in extensive discussions, which ultimately led to the creation of the Survivors' Flag as a meaningful and accessible symbol to commemorate the lives affected by the residential school system.
Over a six-week period marked by consultations, discussions, and collaborative efforts, Inuit, Miโkmaq, Atikamekw, Cree, Ojibway, Dakota, Mohawk, Dene, Nuu-chah-nulth, Secwepemc, and Mรฉtis Survivors contributed to the design. Their diverse perspectives, ideas, and lived experiences breathed life into the symbolism that now resonates with profound significance.
The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation () played a crucial role in ensuring that the Survivors' wishes and ideas were effectively communicated to Vincent Design to complete the flag.
โParts of the design will speak to people in different ways, and that is okay because we will all relate to certain messages based on our experiences. For me, the seeds represent the spirits of the children โ those who did not return home and those who survived what they went through as children. That is an important message โ that we were children.โ ~ Sylvia Genaille (Ojibwe Survivor)

I had the pleasure of doing a little fine-tuning a few weeks back with , fresh off the highs of that big weekend ๐ง
We sorted out a positional issue he was having on his saddle by adjusting the cleat setup on one foot, and of course got a chance to take some pics/video and hash out plans for SR23!
We've been supporters of Shim's Ride since the beginning, and we're very happy to be joining Cole, Nick (), Sam (), the man himself (), and the rest of the team again for Year 4 ๐ค
We'll be again donating $2 from every appointment at for all of July, but we'll be donating $10 from every this go round! We'll also be giving away two BikeFit sessions ๐ฒxโ at Shim's BBQ.

IF YOU CAN SPARE A MOMENT OR TWO ๐๐
To build upon what was said in my previous post, I am fully committed to being an + ally and help make changes in whatever way I can ๐ช
Since I'm a healthcare provider, I've had the most direct exposure to the many flaws in this particular system, so I'd like to start here ๐ค
I don't want to let the cat out of the bag just yet ๐ธ, but we're looking for 3-4 individuals here in our amazing Victoria 2SLGBTQIA+ community to be part of a passion project of ours!
It would require...
1๏ธโฃ a few minutes of your time
2๏ธโฃ us taking one or more pictures of you doing exercises in our gym space
As a thank-you, you'd get...
1๏ธโฃ a solid high five or hug (your choice! but we do like to hug ๐ค)

The goal is to wrap things up by the end of this month so we can release it into the wild during Vic Pride Week ๐ณโ๐๐

HAPPY !๐ณโ๐๐ค
As a white, straight, cisgender man, I realize that Iโve gone through life being pretty damn far away from running up against social injustice, prejudice, and hate, as well as having to regularly experience discrimination in my personal life, at work, in health care settings, and out in the public sphere. Iโve been naively lucky to say the least ๐ฌ
But the more I see, the more I listen, the more I read, and the more I learn about how humans work (both biomechanically and psychologically), the more I realize that my demographic needs to step up their game ๐ค
Iโm not technically part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, and I know I never will be, but I do want to help wherever I can and be the best ally possible ๐ค๐ค
And I know that some people may not want me to be their ally because their story is one where me being an ally is a bad idea, and thatโs fair. I fully respect that.
But if you are open to my allyship, fantastic! Thank you ๐
Iโll have questions (I generally have a lot, ask my patients ๐) so I hope youโll engage with me to further my understanding of where weโve been and where we need to go next.
In an attempt to help make healthcare more inclusive, Iโll be sharing a post later today about a project Iโm trying to get off the ground at my clinic. I hope some people in the Transgender community will be interested in taking part. Keep your eyes peeled!
Thanks for reading โ๐๐

A DAY TO... CELEBRATE? ๐ค Well, sort of.
While it may seem strange to acknowledge a day that celebrates how some of us are sh****ng the bed on 2023 already, it likely highlights the need for some goal reconsideration.
I HATE S.M.A.R.T. GOALS WITH A PASSION, so this is not another post on this topic. It's just here to help you get the ball rolling โฝ If needed
Thinking a little deeper about the motivation behind your goals can help draw larger connections between the different areas of your life, which can really help in getting you fired-up for change ๐ฅ
So have a read and let me know what you think in the comments below! I'll expand more on this next week ๐

THE YEAR OF "LET'S TRY SOME HARDER SH*T" ๐ช๐ค
I needed something to light the fire last year ๐ฅ so I tried my hand at 3 events for some extra challenge and learnings...
1) Ride the Hurricane - Thanks .ie7 for making me pull the trigger on this ride. This was my longest/biggest climb so far in my life! It went better than I thought and learned about how I pace myself ๐ฅต
2) Whistler Gran Fondo Forte - Thanks for putting the bug in my ear on this one. This was the hardest ride I've ever done, and also went well all things considered. (I wasn't impressed with my time... but some things were out of my control that day). I learned about how I fuel myself ๐ซ
3) The Last Ride - This was something that I had my eye on for the past few years. It finally became a reality after my gravel bike arrived. This was my first serious gravel outing, and I learned that I'm totally garbage at gravel riding (for now at least!). My technical skills need some serious upgrading ๐ค
So thanks for everything 2022! You got me excited for '23 ๐
โ๏ธโค๏ธ
IT'S 2023 YOU SAY?! ๐คฏ
Good lord, time flies...
Truth be told, I'm a tad nervous for what 2023 has in store given the current state of things ๐ฌ but I also can't help feeling excited to finally tackle some lofty goals/plans ๐คฉ
So I guess that makes me... excitevous? ...nercited? ๐ค

TLR 22 WAS QUITE SOMETHING ๐ฎ๐ง๏ธโ๏ธ...
But it'd do it again, no question ๐ช
After some great and riding for a bit, I found myself part of a solid little crew of
.rides and Max (sorry man, don't know your handle!). We had some GPS issues and got turned around a few times, and daylight was fading fast ๐
We had a ways to go at 3:30pm once we hit Royal Bay. Even though the slices picked us up, when we approached Thetis, the towel was thrown in ๐ฅ Trying to navigate those trails in the dark was going to quickly turn into a .
But we made our own way to the finish, and scarfed down the delicious food and beer from ๐ and ๐บ, and picked up some new rubber from ๐ฒ.
The long and short routes have been saved, so I'll be heading out to complete them as intended when the days get longer ๐
Sorry for the lack of pics (and thanks Kat for pic #2 as I totally sniped that off your account). I was having too much fun to take any

Pop that orange top on before you head out on your ride (if you have one) and startup some tough conversations.
Above is something all riders received at the this year to pin to their jerseys. And while I realize it is not a direct comment to residential schools, from reading it you can see there is a strong connection in other ways and to in general. So thank you to for spreading the word and to the for all that you do ๐
Have a thoughtful and reflective day everyone.

Some people asked me why the hell I wanted to ride 152km to from (with a stop-off at the top of ) and my usual response was... "to do something hard" ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Overall, it was a great day and I finished about where I wanted... although I could have done an official time of under 7 hours if the aid stations hadn't been so haphazard ๐ (there are definitely logistical kinks for RBC to iron out for next year)
Thanks to my family (but mostly .stedman) for putting up with me as I talked about this event more than you probably wanted to hear, and for being ok with me leaving the house for hours on end to get these old legs up to s***f ๐ฆตโก
A huge congrats to my friends who conquered this massive undertaking, as well as the thousands of others riders who showed up and got it done ๐ช I'm sure you're now all grinning from ear to ear ๐
And of course a massive congrats to both hometown for placing 2nd in the men's St Regis Cup, and his teammates for owning the women's podium with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishes ๐๐
To the fellas at , sorry for the helmet head... this photo doesn't do your fine handiwork any sort of justice
So now I'm on to my next undertakings... I just need that darn to show up!

GREAT TIME WITH THESE CHAPS LAST WEEKEND.
Managed to sneak out for a late afternoon Saturday ride to catch the last 30km of a 300km promo ride with the fellas.
They are back at it again this year to help raise funds for Praxis Spinal Cord Institute (formerly the Rick Hansen Institute)
Praxis is a Canadian-based not-for-profit organization that is a leader spinal cord injury research, innovation and care by accelerating knowledge translation to improve treatments for people with spinal cord injuries.
There may not be a staggering 500km ride this year, but on July 30th there will be a Crit Race! Money will be fundraised through event registration, direct donation, and by donating 100% of Shim's Ride cycling apparel sales (which is quality kit)
Please visit www.shimsride.ca to find out more and donate where you can.

And what about those local businesses that actually bike FOR work? (I'm thinking of and here)
To give yourself an idea, check out 's Car vs Bike calculator! It'll pop your top ๐คฏ

- add 9.3 days to my life
- save 0.4 tonnes of CO2 emissions
- plant the equivalent of 19 trees
- and save myself over $900 (fuel)
Pretty wild, hey? Give it a shot
