✨ What is EMDR therapy? 🤔✨

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing - a service offered by Dawna Silver, RCC! ❤️👀

“Today, EMDR stands as one of the most extensively researched therapies in psychology, offering hope and healing to countless souls who have traversed the harrowing terrain of trauma. Originally designed to aid those grappling with major traumas like natural disasters, war, assault, and more, EMDR has evolved into a beacon of light for individuals navigating various challenges.

Traumatic experiences often produce narratives of self-blame and powerlessness, weaving webs of negative beliefs that shackle the spirit. Whether it's feelings of inadequacy, guilt, distrust, or helplessness, these beliefs can cloud our perception of self and life.

EMDR gently unravels these self-limiting beliefs, guiding individuals towards a path of resilience and self-compassion. Through controlled exposure and bilateral stimulation, EMDR disrupts old neural pathways, paving the way for transformative shifts in perception. ❤️

In my 14 years of practice, I've witnessed the profound impact of EMDR firsthand. Clients emerge from sessions with newfound clarity and a sense of liberation from the burdens of their past. Whether it's trauma, depression, anxiety, or low self-esteem, EMDR offers a pathway to healing that is both swift and enduring.

If you're ready to break free from the past and embrace a future filled with hope and possibility, I invite you to embark on this journey of healing.

Reach out for a complimentary consultation and discover the transformative power of EMDR!” - Dawna Silver, RCC. 🌿💫

✨📣 New Article: Thinking Green: The Surprising Cognitive Benefits of Leafy Vegetables - By: Dr. Pamela Hutchison, ND 📣✨

Martha Clare Morris, the researcher who established the benefits of the MIND diet, is a personal hero of mine. In part, this is because of the remarkable – and surprising – findings she reported in the Journal of Neurology in 2018. This study shed new light on how nutrient-rich leafy green vegetables can significantly impact cognitive decline.

This prospective cohort study followed 960 participants aged 58 to 99, part of the Rush Memory and Aging Project in Chicago. Researchers assessed their cognitive function and dietary habits over several years. Participants completed annual cognitive tests and food frequency questionnaires, which provided data on their average daily servings of green leafy vegetables.

The results were astonishing. The difference in cognitive decline between the lowest and highest quintile was equivalent to 11 years. In other words, individuals in the highest quintile, consuming 1.3 servings of leafy greens daily, had cognitive abilities comparable to those 11 years younger than individuals in the lowest quintile.

In other words, individuals in the highest quintile, consuming 1.3 servings of leafy greens daily, had cognitive abilities comparable to those 11 years younger than individuals eating only 8% of a serving.

To put this into perspective, a serving of leafy greens could be half a cup of cooked spinach or a cup of raw salad greens. This small dietary change can lead to significant cognitive benefits.

Incorporating leafy greens into your daily diet can have profound effects on your cognitive function, potentially slowing down the natural decline associated with aging. While this isn’t medical advice, it’s a powerful reminder of simple daily practices that support our brain health. By adding leafy greens to our meals, we can promote a healthier, more resilient mind.

If you want to learn more you can tune into my podcast, The Well Nurtured Brain, Season 1 Episode 5 – Thinking Green: The Surprising Benefits of Leafy Vegetables. Available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.🎙️💛

✨📣 New Article - The Role of Iron Infusions in Pregnancy: Ensuring Maternal Health and Fetal Well-Being. By: Dr. Lorna Ciccone and Dr. Anita Komonski! 📣✨

🔥Read our full article on our websites blog 🔥

Iron deficiency during pregnancy is a common issue, affecting 30% of pregnancies in Canada. Pregnant people require more iron, especially in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters when most of the iron transfer to the baby occurs. 🩸

A pregnant individual typically has about 2500 mg of iron stored in their body. During pregnancy, an additional 1000 mg of iron is needed to support both the pregnant individual and the growing baby. This amount is equivalent to roughly 177 full-sized steaks or about 20 steaks per month over the nine months of pregnancy. (For vegetarians and vegans – this is 1kg of tofu per day!!) 🥩

Due to this increased demand, pregnant people are at a higher risk of developing iron deficiency or iron deficiency anemia (IDA). Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a specific condition resulting from prolonged or severe iron deficiency that impacts red blood cell production.

The symptoms of iron deficiency and IDA can overlap with normal pregnancy symptoms, making it easy to miss.

These symptoms include:
Fatigue
Shortness of Breath
Weakness
Dizziness
Irritability
Mood Changes

In addition, symptoms of low iron levels can include: hair loss, headache, restless legs, frequent illness, heart palpitations, cold hands and feet.

Dietary adjustments and oral supplements are usually the first treatment options. However, Due to the limited absorption of iron in the gut, it can become very difficult to treat with oral supplements alone by the third trimester. 🤰

Iron infusions bypass the gut by delivering iron directly into the bloodstream, providing rapid treatment for iron deficiency or IDA.

It’s important for individuals to communicate with their healthcare providers about their symptoms and preferences regarding iron supplementation. Routine prenatal care typically includes screening to identify those who may benefit from additional interventions like iron infusions.

✨🍓 Recipe #5 from Keara Lubchenko, RD’s new Recipe Series: Chocolate Strawberry Yogurt Clusters 🍓🍫✨

As summer is here, this is a perfect frozen treat to enjoy!! You may have seen this viral recipe on social media, and now you can easily recreate it in your kitchen with just a few simple ingredients. 🍓

What makes these clusters so special? The plain Greek yogurt provides a creamy and protein-rich base, while the fresh strawberries add a burst of sweetness and fibre to keep you feeling satisfied. A touch of honey lends natural sweetness without the need for refined sugars. Let’s not forget the chocolate! Rich-semi sweet chocolate chips add a decadent layer to these clusters, making them truly delicious. 🍫

The best part? No baking is required - simply mix, freeze and enjoy! For a little extra flavour consider sprinkling some sea salt on top of the clusters. These chocolate strawberry yogurt clusters are sure to become a new favourite for any summer gathering or a refreshing snack on a hot day! ☀️

Ingredients:
1 ½ cups - Fresh strawberries, chopped
1 cup - Plain Greek yogurt (or flavour of your choice)
1 tbsp - Honey
1 tsp - Vanilla
1 cup - Semi-sweet chocolate chips
2 tbsp - Coconut oil

Steps: see our Website Blog post or swipe to see how to make your strawberry yogurt clusters at home! 🍓✨

Consider making these clusters with a different type of fruit such as mango, raspberries or blueberries. You could also try adding in chopped nuts, granola or coconut. I recommend storing these in the freezer rather than in the fridge. I find when I store them in the fridge, they tend to melt and get messy. Enjoy your sweet treat!! 🍓❤️

✨📣 New Article: Hypermobility, Sleep and Pain - by Aaron Jones, Physiotherapist. 📣✨

👀 check out Aaron’s full article in our Website under blog 👀

“Many of my patients with hypermobility related conditions report either having trouble sleeping or feeling unrested in the morning. While hypermobility related sleep disorders are covered in detail by Dr. Alan Pocinki here, I would like to delve a little deeper into the relationship between sleep and pain.

Many of my patients report pain is the major reason they have trouble sleeping. Unsurprisingly to anyone who has experienced chronic pain, research has shown that pain interferes with sleep quality. But, what you may not realize is that the reverse is also true. Poor sleep quality increases pain.

To emphasize how impactful just one night of sleep deprivation can be on someone’s pain experience, I like to tell my patients about a study conducted by Dr. Sigrid Schuh-Hofer at Heidelberg University. Dr. Schuh-Hofer and her colleagues took 14 very healthy medical students, made sure they had a good night’s sleep, then measured how much pressing, pinpricking, heating, and cooling the students could take on the back of their hands until it hurt.

Subsequently, they had the students stay up all night chatting, playing games, and going for short walks, and then repeated the pain experiments the next morning. The night of lost sleep not only resulted in all the students experiencing a lower pain threshold for the various painful stimuli; they also scored higher on a measure of anxiety. In other words, even under ideal health circumstances, less sleep equals more pain and anxiety. If just one night of sleep deprivation in ideal circumstances increases pain sensitivity; imagine what happens after months or years of poor sleep under challenging life circumstances!”

✨🥗 Recipe #4 from Keara Lubchenko, RD’s new Recipe Series: Spring Buddha Bowl. 🥗✨

What better way to finish off spring than with a vibrant spring Buddha bowl? 🥑

Packed with nutritious ingredients such as spinach, cucumbers, avocado and radishes, this bowl is a delightful celebration of seasonal abundance. ❤️

Tahini dressing is my absolute favourite! If you are new to tahini, it is a paste made from sesame seeds. It spreads similarly to peanut butter but has an earthy and nutty flavour. Tahini is known for its potential to prevent many health problems such as hypertension, cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes. It also has nutritional properties that can help reduce inflammation in the body. This tahini dressing is versatile and has impressive health benefits which makes it a must-try dressing for anyone looking to add a nutritious twist to their meal! 🥗

Simple to prepare, this bowl offers opportunities for customizing your favourite toppings such as sesame seeds, nourishing h**p seeds and sunflower seeds. These seeds are good sources of protein and healthy fats. H**p seeds are packed with omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are important for heart health. Sunflower seeds are a great source of vitamin E, an antioxidant that helps protect your cells from damage. Both also contain fibre! Sprinkle a generous amount over your Spring Buddha bowl to not only enhance the visual appeal but also to boost its nutritional content. 🍽️

Ingredients:
Dressing
2 tbsp – Tahini
1 tsp – Maple Syrup
1 tsp – Yellow Mustard
Salt and fresh ground pepper ¼ teaspoon
Garlic, presed 1 clove
~2 Tbsp – Water, to thin out dressing to desired consistency

Salad Bowl
2-3 cups – Cooked quinoa or brown rice
4 cups – Spinach
1 cup – Grape/cherry tomatoes, halved
2 – Persian (mini) cucumber, chopped
8-10 – Small radishes
1 – Avocado
1/2 cup – baked chickpeas (pre-baked sea salt or make your own)
Optional toppings: sesame seeds, h**p seeds, sunflower seeds

Steps: see our Website Blog post or swipe to see how to make this Buddha Bowl at home! 🥗✨

✨🌿Understanding Peripheral Neuropathy: Causes and Care with Neuro-Acupuncture - by: Jennifer Midlane, RAc. 💚✨

Peripheral neuropathy, a challenging condition causing discomfort and dysfunction in daily life, can be effectively managed with neuro-acupuncture. By exploring its causes and the healing effect of neuro-acupuncture, individuals coping with peripheral neuropathy can find relief.

Let’s delve into the top three causes of this condition and how acupuncture can alleviate symptoms and promote nerve health!

1️⃣ Diabetes: Elevated blood sugar levels over time can damage nerves, making diabetes the most common cause of peripheral neuropathy. This can lead to symptoms like numbness, tingling, squeezing, and burning. Neuro-acupuncture improves blood flow to damaged nerves, reduces inflammation, and stimulates nerve repair.

2️⃣ Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy, vital for cancer treatment, can cause peripheral neuropathy as a side effect. The potent medication used in chemotherapy may damage nerves, resulting in numbness and painful sensations. Neuro-acupuncture, a gentle and non-invasive option, offers a comforting way to manage symptoms, improving quality of life during or following cancer treatment.

3️⃣ Physical Trauma: Injuries from accidents or surgeries can directly damage peripheral nerves, leading to neuropathic symptoms. Neuro-acupuncture stimulates the specific nerves affected, promoting repair, alleviating symptoms, and reducing stress associated with traumatic injuries.

How Does Neuro-Acupuncture Help? 🧠

Neuro-acupuncture stimulates nerve activity, promoting the body’s natural healing and regulating functions. The treatments trigger the release of neurotransmitters that promote nerve repair, reduce pain signals, and provoke deep relaxation. Neuro-acupuncture improves blood circulation to damaged nerves, supplying essential nutrients and oxygen for repair and regeneration.

Jennifer Midlane is an acupuncturist practicing at Acacia Health, She focuses on providing effective pain relief and care for those with neurological conditions, bridging the wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine with modern scientific research. ❤️
