Globethics and the Institute for Ethics in Artificial Intelligence - TUM have concluded the successful International AI and Human Rights Summit in Munich, Germany.

🌐The summit provided the perfect opportunity to delve into the details of the ongoing global debate on hashtag and hashtag . Over 50 experts from public and private sectors, civil society and academia representing five continents joined the conversation.

💬Some key takeaways:
🌐The hashtag discourse has achieved tremendous milestones, including the development of new regulations for AI. However, we must remember that there is still no global consensus on the utilisation and safety of these technologies, in public and private sectors.
🌐Human rights must involve all humans, equally for those who produce technologies and those who consume them, regardless of where we live or how we identify.
🌐While regulatory efforts, for example the EU AI Act, are an important step towards upholding human rights in an AI context, we need global approaches for global problems, particularly inputs from the majority world.
🌐One important prerequisite is to speak the same language. As set out in the recent publication, Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights: Recommendations for Companies, the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights provide an important basis for companies to include AI in its human rights due diligence: https://www.globalcompact.de/mediathek/publikationen/publikation/artificial-intelligence-and-human-rights
🌐Another key aspect is to include a wider spectrum of voices and perspectives in our discussions surrounding AI and human rights, from indigenous groups, big tech and future generations.
🌐While discussions focused predominantly - and justifiably - on human rights risks associated with AI, it's important to note that there are also many opportunities. Both sides should be reflected in the debate.

"The AI and Human Rights discussion is timely not only to operationalise AI ethics from the human rights lens, but also to address emerging human rights challenges in the age of AI", said Wallace Cheng (Globethics) during the opening session, where he was joined by Christoph Lütge, Amb.Prof.Muhammadou M.O. Kah, Ph.D, Sarah Hechler, Marcello Ienca, Alexander Kriebitz, and Caitlin Corrigan.

Special thanks to the Institute for Ethics in Artificial Intelligence - TUM team for the leadership, organisation and for hosting the debate.

“A shared vision for development, application and ethical use of AI” emerges from the UNESCO Eastern Africa Sub-Regional Forum on Artificial Intelligence ( ) in Nairobi, where Herbert Makinda represented Globethics this week.

Key takeaways on ethical governance and AI policies and strategies include:

🌟 Inclusive development in Africa: Reflecting on a shared vision for progress, use, and the lessons from Eastern African Member States, it's clear that balancing safety with ethical considerations in AI development is crucial.

🌟 Insights from Eastern Africa highlight the need for strategies and frameworks that build AI capacities inclusively and sustainably. Policymakers should focus on identifying data commons and promoting data sharing across sectors. Educational institutions must update their curricula to include the social and ethical dimensions of AI, which are often overlooked in traditional computer science and IT programs.

💬In the words of Kenneth O., Senior Solutions Director, Huawei Cloud Kenya, “Artificial Intelligence is here to stay. The public and private sectors must collaborate on the cultural and economic development of AI.” - Globethics looks forward to seeing and being part of these collaborations for an ethical AI for all.

Inspired by discussions at , the team has picked our book of the month: The Prospect of a Humanitarian Artificial Intelligence

In this open-access book, Carlos Montemayor illuminates the development of (AI) by examining our drive to live a dignified life. He uses the notions of agency and attention to consider our pursuit of what is important.

Through his insightful comparisons between human and animal intelligence, Montemayor makes it clear why adopting a need-based attention approach justifies a humanitarian framework. This is an urgent, timely argument for developing technologies based on international human rights agreements.
