Award for best scientific article published by a medical student
The CIOMS 2020 annual award of $1500 US for the best scientific article published in the areas of pharmacovigilance and research ethics is seeking applications up to 30 November 2020. Details on how to apply are on CIOMS website under STUDENTS or write to [email protected].

The CIOMS Working Group on Clinical Research in Resource-Limited Settings (https://cioms.ch/working_groups/clinical-research-rls/) held its 5th Meeting in Merida (Spain) on 8-9 October 2019. CIOMS supported the not-for-profit civil society organization, Community Health and Information Network (CHAIN), Uganda, with holding a workshop on “Opportunities and Challenges of Patient Involvement in Drug Development and Safe Use of Medicines in Resource Limited Settings”. CHAIN is a member of the International Alliance of Patients’ Organizations (IAPO) and the workshop was co-hosted with the National Drug Authority, with coverage on the local radio. The event took place on the on 29th August 2019 and brought together bioethics committee members, patient organisations, and researchers. CIOMS is currently producing a guideline on Clinical Research in Resource-Limited Settings, and a second guideline on Patient Involvement in Development and Safe Use of Medicines.
The CIOMS guideline, International Ethical Guidelines for Health-Related Research Involving Humans (2016), has now been translated into Chinese, French, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian (with the support of WHO European Regional Office), Spanish (in cooperation with the Pan American Health Organization), and Ukrainian; with Arabic to follow soon. We are delighted to announce that Ms. Connie Rees from the University Medical Center Utrecht, the Netherlands, received the CIOMS annual award 2018 of US$ 1500 for the best scientific article published by a medical student in the areas of pharmacovigilance and/or research ethics. She is the joint first author of a paper published in the peer-reviewed journal, Tropical Medicine and International Health, in December 2018, entitled “The willingness to participate in biomedical research involving human beings in low- and middle-income countries: a systematic review”.
CIOMS recently signed an agreement with the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) to support medical students to undertake internships in the World Health Organization (WHO). For more information, visit www.cioms.ch.

CIOMS grants financial support for two or three students annually who are interns at WHO Geneva for a 2-3 months period with maximum support of 1’200 CHF per month. T
This Internship opportunity is open to medical students who belong to IFMSA Member Organizations.
Interns shall be shortlisted by IFMSA and the final selection will be done by WHO. The selection process remains at the sole discretion of WHO. Only applicants selected by WHO are eligible for a CIOMS financial support grant.
