Despite efforts, the rate of young people not in employment, education, or training (NEET) has only slightly decreased from 2015 to 2024 and is projected to remain flat for the next two years. The new International Labour Organization report finds that the rate of young women not in employment, education, or training is more than double that of young men.

The Paralympic Games, like the Olympics, are often the high point of an athletes career. But competing at such an elite level requires extraordinary dedication and investment of time and resources.

In all the tension and drama of the Games it is easy to forget that athletes are also workers and, outside competition, they still need to earn a living and are entitled to the same rights and protections as any other worker.

So, what is life like as a Paralympic athlete? How do elite sports-people balance the demands of sporting excellence with earning a living? And how do the Paralympic Games promote disability inclusion?

Imagine landing a great job after a long time trying. You’re well qualified, were the best candidate but are told by a new colleague on your first day, that you only got the post because of positive discrimination.

Over time you prove your worth but every year are passed over for promotion. Sometimes you don’t want to go into work because of the little digs about your braids or about the way you express yourself.

Race discrimination in the workplace is a reality for many Black people, despite the existence of a multitude of ‘diversity and inclusion’ initiatives. While overt racism may be a thing of the past, systemic racism, microaggressions and biases mean the world of work is far from being a level playing field.

Cristina, who had always worked in the mining industry with her family, remembers when the coal mine shut down and the devastating effects this had for her village in Spain.

What Cristina Carro couldn’t imagine at that moment, was the opportunity that would arise years later from the same mine. A government-led Just Transitions project helped her find a new job, restoring a dis-used mine to its natural setting.

💬 My hope is that all of this will have a positive impact on our region and that it will start to prosper again. 💚🌎

“It’s amazing to look back and see where I was, and then look at what we’re doing now.”

Alfredo Carrasco, a 27-year-old farmer from Chile, is the founder of FarmHability, a project dedicated to promoting disability inclusion in agricultural and rural sectors. After an accident left him paralyzed, Alfredo realized that regaining his independence was key to his rehabilitation. Having spent his life on a farm, he returned to it, starting with building a greenhouse to grow seedlings.

What began as a personal endeavor soon grew into something much bigger. Alfredo saw the challenges people with disabilities face in finding employment in rural areas and developed FarmHability in response. He began inviting people to participate in training workshops, with the goal of empowering them to feel independent and productive, breaking down myths and barriers along the way.

Nearly two-thirds of young adult workers in low- and lower-middle-income countries hold qualifications that do not match well with the work that they do.

We need to ensure that:

✅ Educated young people can fully realize the potential gains of higher educational attainment

✅ Undereducated young people have access to on-the-job training and lifelong learning to raise their productivity levels in the enterprises that employ them.

In 2023, over 20% of young people globally were not in employment, education, or training (NEET). This statistic highlights a critical issue that affects the future of millions of young individuals.

With a strong gender bias, where 2 in 3 NEETs are women, this problem requires immediate and focused attention.

The ILO's latest report sheds light on these issues and offers insights into how to address them effectively.

On this International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, we celebrate voices like Olinda Silvano's: “I love Cantagallo and I love Peru. I am happy to be a Peruvian indigenous woman. I am doing my job, creating my art, and making my country proud.”

Across Latin America and the Caribbean, there are more than 800 indigenous groups representing 54.8 million people. Land dispossession, climate change, ecological degradation, and displacement due to conflict and violence are some of the migration factors that push them to leave their communities in search of better lives.

Over 20 years ago, Olinda moved to the capital of Peru, yet life wasn’t easy here. She lost her father, they faced violence, and the community faced a huge fire.
