World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD)

WMBD is a global initiative devoted to celebrating migratory birds and for promoting their conservation worldwide. #WMBD2020

World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) is a global awareness-raising campaign with the aim to highlight the need for the protection of migratory birds and their habitats. It was initiated in 2006 by the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) Secretariat in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Convention on Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS). On the second Saturday each May and Oc

Join this year’s International Monarch Monitoring Blitz from 26 July to 4 August 2024! Become a community scientist and help to protect the emblematic monarch butterfly, whose migration spans across Canada, the United States and Mexico. The data gathered by volunteers will allow experts to estimate the size of the population of monarchs that are migrating to Mexico at this time of year.

Go outdoors and share your experiences on social media with the hashtag and help spread the word about this important initiative! If you spot monarch eggs, chrysalises, caterpillars, adult butterflies, or milkweed plants, where monarchs lay their eggs, report your sightings to one of the community science programs listed here:
http://www.cec.org/international-monarch-monitoring-blitz/

This initiative is especially significant in light of this year’s campaign that aims to raise awareness about the challenges birds face and encourages conservation actions worldwide. The second peak day celebration of will take place on 12 October 2024 under the theme “Protect insects, protect birds”. Present in almost all the world’s ecosystems, insects are essential food sources for migratory birds on their long journeys.

Celebrate World Albatross Day with us today! Each year on 19 June this global event encourages conservation actions for albatrosses – our world’s most iconic seabird. Most species of albatrosses are in decline, and fisheries bycatch remains the major driver.

This year the Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP) marks the event by focusing on how the establishment of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) designated within governments’ own territorial waters can improve the conservation status of albatrosses by protecting key regions across these magnificent birds’ migratory ranges.

This year’s celebration is particularly significant in light of the Agreement on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ treaty). Once ratified, this agreement will enable the creation of MPAs in areas beyond national jurisdictions — an area covering almost two-thirds of the ocean.

Insects provide the necessary energy for migratory bird species, because they contain remarkable nutrients, providing birds with protein-dense, high-energy sources of food.

Migratory bird species depend on insects during migration and at other stages of their life cycles when feeding their offspring.

The presence of insects greatly influences the timing, duration, and overall success of bird migrations.

During stopovers at various locations along their migration routes, birds actively forage for insects in fields, forests, wetlands, and other habitats. They catch flying insects in mid-air, or they search for insects among leaves, bark, and vegetation.

Many birds’ journeys coincide with peak insect abundance in their stopover areas.
