Meet the Jury for the Pavilion of Finland at the Venice Biennale 2026!

Frame received altogether 128 applications for the Open Call organised over the summer for the Finnish Pavilion exhibition at the 2026 Venice Art Biennale. This October, the esteemed jury members will face the exciting task of selecting a short list of applicants for the next phase.

💫 Charles Esche is a curator, writer, and the Director of the Van Abbemuseum in the Netherlands. He is a professor of contemporary art at the University of Art in London. Esche was the artistic director of the Jakarta Biennial, São Paulo Biennial and Istanbul Biennial, among others.

💫 Asrin Haidari is the Curator of Contemporary Nordic Art at Moderna Museet and curated the Nordic Pavilion exhibition at the 2024 Venice Biennale. Haidari co-founded and co-directed the art institution Mint in Stockholm. Previously she served as Artistic Director for the Luleå Biennial and worked at Tensta Konsthall.

💫 Anna-Riikka Hirvonen is the Director of audience engagement at the Oulu Art Museum in Finland, where she focuses on promoting contemporary art on both national and international stages.

💫 Outi Pieski is a Sámi visual artist based in Ohcejohka (Utsjoki), the Finnish side of Sápmi. Pieski has exhibited internationally for over two decades, most recently at Tate St Ives; Gothenburg Biennial; Gropius Bau, Berlin; the Biennale of Sydney; Gwangju Biennale, and the Finnish Pavilion at the 2019 Venice Biennale.

💫 The jury is chaired by Juha Huuskonen, Director of Frame and Commissioner of the Finnish Pavilion.

The event will dive into digital commoning practices in relation to the African Art Book Fair, organised in May in Dakar. It will discuss the role of a radio in an art book fair, how publishing practices explore the politics of sounds and the sound of politics, and radio as a radical form of collective organisation. 📈 Kuvataiteen tilastot vuodelta 2023 ovat nyt julkaistu!

🎊 Suomalaisissa kuvataidekohteissa tehtiin yhteensä 5,2 miljoonaa käyntiä, mikä on uusi kaikkien aikojen ennätys.

🌅 Suomen 67 taidemuseokohteeseen tehtiin yhteensä 3 miljoonaa käyntiä, mikä tarkoittaa 37% kasvua edellisvuodesta.

📉 Gallerioissa vierailtiin ahkerasti, m***a teosmyynti hidastui. Gallerioiden teosmyynti laski 9,8 miljoonasta 6,9 miljoonaan euroon.

🎂 Suomessa toimivat 40 taidelainaamoa lainasivat vuonna 2023 yhteensä 2 200 teosta, mistä syntyi tuloja yli 2 miljoonan euron arvosta.

🌟 Nykytaiteen tiedotuskeskuksena Frame tilastoi vuosittain tietoja suomalaista taidegallerioista sekä taidemuseoiden ja taidetapahtumien käyntimääristä. Lisää lukuja ja tilastoja löydät Framen verkkosivuilla.

🌟 Visual art statistics for 2023 have been published! The total number of visits to Finnish art museums, art galleries, and visual art events in 2023 was 5.2 million, which is an all-time record! A total of 3 million visits were made to Finland’s 67 art museums. Art sales in galleries dropped from 9.8 million euros to 6.9 million euros. Finland's 40 art lending services issued around 2,200 new art loans, generating over €2 million from loans and direct purchases.

🌟 Frame compiles annually information about Finnish art galleries and the visitor numbers of art museums and art events. At the moment, statistics and infocards are available in Finnish.

Join us at Frame’s office on Friday, 20 September, 5–7 pm for an evening with curators Evelyn Simons and Malena Souto Arena. ✨

Both curators are currently participating in the HICP residency at Suomenlinna, organized by Frame and HIAP. The event features presentations on their curatorial interests and residency plans, followed by an informal gathering with refreshments.

💛️ Evelyn Simons (Belgium) will present her work as curator, writer, and co-founder of RendezVous - Brussels Art Week. She will introduce her practice, facilitating artistic experiment and collaborations at the crossroads of art, nightlife, music, architecture, performance and fashion.

💛️ Malena Souto Arena (Argentina) will introduce glimpses of her practice related to art, science and technology. Additionally, she will present her residency research project titled ‘Nature’s Entelechy: Science and Metaphysics of the Installation through Non-Human Philosophy.’

Kulttuuri | Tilastokeskus uhkaa lopettaa kulttuurin ja joukkoviestinnän seurannan, syynä leikkaukset Lukuisat kulttuurialan toimijat protestoivat Tilastokeskuksen säästösuunnitelmaa.

16 kulttuuriorganisaatiota ilmaisee tuoreessa kannanotossa huolensa kulttuuritilastojen puolesta. Kulttuurialan tietopohjaa uhkaa rapautuminen, kun Tilastokeskuksen kulttuuritilastot ovat joutumassa säästöjen vuoksi lakkautuslistalle. Ehdotus säästötoimenpiteistä on parhaillaan lausuntokierroksella.

Luovat kulttuurialat ovat merkittäviä kasvualoja, joiden tilastollisen seurannan lopettaminen olisi strateginen virhe sekä työllisyyden, talouskasvun että kansallisen kulttuurin kannalta.

Suomessa kulttuuritilastoja on julkaistu 1970-luvun lopulta lähtien. Tilasto kuvaa kulttuurialan tuotantoa, tarjontaa, taloutta, julkista tukea, työvoimaa, koulutusta sekä harrastusta ja kulutusta eri taiteen- ja kulttuurin aloilla.

"Tilastojen myötä kadottaisimme näkymän kulttuurialan ilmiöiden ajallisiin kehityssuuntiin, ihmisten kulutustottumuksiin sekä alan toimintarakenteiden kehitykseen. Samalla taide ja kulttuuri vähitellen hiipuisivat näkymättömiin koko yhteiskunnallisesta tarkastelusta", kannanotossa todetaan.

The Finnish Pavilion at the 15th Gwangju Biennale - 광주비엔날레 opens today at Ha Jung-woong Museum of Art in Gwangju!

The exhibition 'Acts of Care' presents works by four visual artists living and working in Finland: Nayab Noor Ikram, Hertta Kiiski, Maija Tammi and Sampsa Virkajärvi. It is curated by Kati Kivinen and Pirkko Siitari. The Finnish Pavilion is part of the Gwangju Biennale Pavilion programme, highlighting contemporary art from various countries.

Through a selection of videos and installations, the Finnish Pavilion exhibition raises questions about the role and significance of care and nurturing in today’s societies. On political and personal levels, the artists’ works reflect the relationships between society and the individual, humans and other organisms.

The Finnish Pavilion is supported by Frame Contemporary Art Finland, The Embassy of Finland in Seoul, Gwangju Biennale Foundation and LG Electronics.

Taiteen vapaan kentän toimijoita edustavat organisaatiot lähettävät tänään Helsingin Sanomissa terveiset budjettiriiheen valmistautuvalle hallitukselle: vapaan kentän avainasema kulttuurin tulevaisuustyössä tulee ymmärtää.

Taiteen vapaan kentän toimijoilla on keskeinen merkitys koko kulttuurialan työllistäjänä, taiteen alueellisen saatavuuden takaajana ja taiteen uusiutumisen alustana. Ehdotetut kulttuurin valtionavustusten leikkaukset merkitsisivät vapaan kentän ryhmien ja organisaatioiden toiminnan supistamista ja jopa alasajoa. Koko taiteen kentän ekosysteemin riittävä rahoitus on sen yhteinen elinehto.

Through a selection of videos and installations, the Finnish Pavilion exhibition raises questions about the role and significance of care and nurturing in today’s societies. The recent pandemics, aging populations and the environmental crisis have highlighted the inadequacy and necessity of care for the living and non-living alike. On political and personal levels, the artists’ works reflect the relationships between society and the individual, humans and other organisms.

Acts of Care approaches care and nursing from different perspectives, looking at parent-child relations of human and non-human actors, hierarchies between species and possible futures where care is provided more equally. It asks, what can we learn from nature, animals and each other about nurturing, empathy and care?

The Finnish Pavilion is supported by Frame Contemporary Art Finland, Embassy of Finland in Seoul, Gwangju Biennale Foundation and LG Electronics.

Travel grant deadline coming up! ⏳🧳 Artists and art professionals planning to travel abroad for work this Autumn: apply for a Frame travel grant by 31 August, in order to receive the decision by the end of September.

For art professionals traveling to or from Finland, this is the last application round for 2024. Artists can leave travel grant applications for 2024 by the end of October. Frame travel grants can be applied continuously, but decisions are made every two months. ✍️ Read more about our grants on Frame’s website.

This year’s Venice Biennale is already halfway through! Until 24 November, there’s still time to experience the Biennale, including the 87 country pavilions.

Valtiovarainministeriö julkisti perjantaina esityksensä valtion ensi vuoden budjetiksi. Opetus- ja kulttuuriministeriön jakamiin valtionavustuksiin esitetään 65 miljoonan leikkausta, josta 50 miljoonaa on vielä kohdentamatta ministeriön hallinnonalojen sisällä. Neuvottelut käydään budjettiriihessä 3.–4. syyskuuta.

Leikkurin alla ovat esimerkiksi museoiden valtionosuudet, taiteen ja kulttuurin valtionavustukset sekä yksityisen kopioinnin hyvitys. Leikkaukset tarkoittavat väistämättä tuhoisia vaikutuksia kulttuurialan ammattilaisten työllisyydelle ja taiteen saavutettavuudelle. Ne heikentävät merkittävästi kulttuurialan synnyttämää vientiä, kasvua ja hyvinvointia.

Frame’s long-term Director Raija Koli ends her term this summer. Raija’s contribution to Frame and Finnish contemporary art during this past decade cannot be overstated. In this bittersweet moment, we want to express our deepest gratitude for all her work and most of all colleagueship, wisdom and kindness!

Raija leaves a lot of learnings and great sayings behind but this is one of the recent ones: ”Work hard, but keep it fun, always be kind – and remember that working with art is a great privilege.”

Ready for the summer holidays, but still up to seeing some great contemporary art? Here are some exhibitions supported by Frame showcasing Finnish contemporary art over the summer! 🔍☀️✨

🏰 Einari Hyvönen’s paintings of popular nostalgic characters address themes of heartbreak, death and environmental crisis. His works are part of a group show ‘Kingdom’ in Tuesday to Friday gallery in Valencia, Spain until 31 July.

🪡 Liisa Hietanen’s knit work sculptures can be seen in the exhibition ‘in under genom upp och sedan ut’, bringing together five Nordic textile artists in Galleri Salhus, Norway. The exhibition is on view until 1 September.

🌿 Maija Tammi’s first solo exhibition in the Netherlands ‘Hulda, Lilli & The Roach’ opens on 5 July at the MU Hybrid Art House, Eindhoven. Through meticulously captured and emotionally loaded storytelling, Tammi examines the relationship between human and non-human nature.

🪞Lu Yufan’s photography confronts anxieties about societal beauty ideals and the cosmetic surgery scene in China. The group exhibition ‘Body’ is on view in gallery Seek in Tallinn, Estonia until 30 September.

🌳 Rooting itself from folklore, the exhibition ‘Enter Woodland Spirits’ lets the viewer in on an emotional relationship with nature at the Estonian Literary Museum and the Natural History Museum of Tartu University until 25 August. From Finland, Hans Rosenström, Niskanen & Salo in collaboration with Inkeri Aula, Nastja Säde Rönkkö and Pia Sirén, take part.

🫂 Seen in 2023 at the Tallinn Art Hall, the exhibition ‘Hold Me Tender’ travels to the Meduza Gallery in Vilnius, Lithuania and continues its dialogue of relationships and care, social roles and responsibility. Open from 19 July onwards, the exhibition features the work ‘Re-treat’ by Anna Maria Häkkinen and Maija Mustonen.

We are thrilled to announce the Finnish Pavilion at the 15th Gwangju Biennale - 광주비엔날레, opening in September! Titled ‘Pansori, a soundscape of the 21st century’, the 15th Gwangju Biennale is curated by Nicolas Bourriaud and runs from 7 September to 1 December 2024 in various locations in the city of Gwangju, South Korea. The Finnish Pavilion is part of the Gwangju Biennale Pavilion programme.

Friends and colleagues in the Netherlands! This June, we are co-organising three events in Amsterdam, The Hague and Eindhoven – please join us!

This Friday, the Islands of Kinship network organises a seminar and a book launch at Stroom Den Haag in The Hague. The event focuses on accessibility in art institutions, especially on the role of language and communication.

On the upcoming weekend, Frame Curatorial Research Fellow Soph Boobyer will participate in the opening weekend of Van Abbemuseum's new exhibition Soils in Eindhoven. The programme includes talks, panels, performances and tours.

On Monday, 17 June at 6 pm, De Appel in Amsterdam is hosting a conversation on curatorial research around Frame’s new publication 'Falling In'. The event is organised in collaboration with Finnish Cultural Institute for the Benelux.

Frame is now inviting proposals for the Pavilion of Finland at the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia in 2026! 📄💙

We are seeking compelling project proposals for the Aalto Pavilion of Finland, located in the Giardini venue at the Venice Biennale. The team submitting the proposal must include at least one artist and one curator. One or more of the artists must be Finnish or based in Finland.

The call is two-phased:

▪️The proposals can be submitted between 4 June and 18 August 2024.
▪️After assessment, the jury will invite a maximum of 5 applicants to develop their proposals further. The selected project will be published in early 2025.

The project will be presented as an exhibition at the Pavilion of Finland from April to November 2026. The 2026 exhibition is made in collaboration with the Oulu2026 - European Capital of Culture 2026.

Starting next week, Frame is inviting project proposals for the Pavilion of Finland at the 2026 Venice Biennale! 🌳🗓✨

The call is two-phased: In this first phase, we are looking for a wide range of concise exhibition proposals. In the second phase, a shortlist of applicants will be invited to develop their proposals further. The team submitting the proposal must include at least one artist and one curator. One or more of the artists must be Finnish or based in Finland.

The application materials and further information about the call will be published on Tuesday 4 June.

Frame Contemporary Art Finland is the commissioner of the Aalto Pavilion of Finland, located in the Giardini venue at the Venice Biennale.
