HELP FIND THE 14,000 MEN WHO NEED TREATMENT FOR PROSTATE CANCER
We are supporting Prostate Cancer UK and NHS England’s campaign to find 14,000 men who have not started treatment for prostate cancer since the beginning of the pandemic.
Mainly affecting men over the age of 50, prostate cancer is particularly prevalent among the black community with 1 in 4 men from this population group impacted by the disease.
The National Healthcare Inequalities Improvement Programme has identified early cancer diagnosis as one of the five clinical areas of focus in the Core20PLUS5 approach and we would appreciate your support in raising awareness of an online risk checker which is available to help narrow the treatment gap and reduce health inequalities.
The risk checker takes 30-seconds to complete and helps men understand their risk of prostate cancer.
Prostate Cancer UK, in partnership with the NHS, has developed a range of resources which you may find helpful.

Watch for measles, UK doctors told, as vaccine rate dips
21 November 2023 | By Michelle Roberts | Digital health editor | BBC News
Doctors must be on high alert for measles as vaccine rates among young children have dipped to a 10-year low, leaving some unprotected and risking outbreaks of the highly infectious and dangerous virus, experts say.
It is the first time in decades the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) has issued national guidance such as this.
At least 95% of children should be double vaccinated by the age of five.
But the UK is well below that target.
Latest figures show only 84.5% had received a second shot of the protective measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) jab - the lowest level since 2010-11.
Measles can make children very sick. The main symptoms are a fever and a rash but it can cause serious complications including meningitis. For some, it is fatal.

Scientist Behind Ozempic Warns That There's a "Price"
Updated June 14 2023 / by Noor Al-Sibai
"Once you’ve been on this for a year or two, life is so miserably boring that you can’t stand it."
Semaglutide, the diabetes medication that's skyrocketed in popularity after it turned out to be a strikingly effective weight loss drug, has its drawbacks — and, per one of the researchers who discovered its underlying mechanism, they can be life-altering.
In interviews with Wired, scientists who pioneered research into glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), the hormone mimicked by semaglutide — sold as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Rybelsus — reflected on the explosive attention on the drug this year. It's a must-read overall, but particularly interesting was the perspective of Jens Juul Holst, a Danish biomedical researcher who worked on the initial delivery method of GLP-1 imitators, who told the magazine that the drug's effects can be more profound than potential patients might realize.
Scientist Behind Ozempic Warns That There's a "Price" One of the scientists who invented the underlying mechanism of Ozempic has a pretty severe warning for those interested in taking it.

Observer investigation reveals Meta Pixel tool passed on private details of web browsing on medical sites

NHS trusts are sharing intimate details about patients’ medical conditions, appointments and treatments with Facebook without consent and despite promising never to do so.
An Observer investigation has uncovered a covert tracking tool in the websites of 20 NHS trusts which has for years collected browsing information and shared it with the tech giant in a major breach of privacy.
The data includes granular details of pages viewed, buttons clicked and keywords searched. It is matched to the user’s IP address – an identifier linked to an individual or household – and in many cases details of their Facebook account.
Information extracted by Meta Pixel can be used by Facebook’s parent company, Meta, for its own business purposes – including improving its targeted advertising services.
Records of information sent to the firm by NHS websites reveal it includes data that – when linked to an individual – could reveal personal medical details.
It was collected from patients who visited hundreds of NHS webpages about HIV, self-harm, gender identity services, sexual health, cancer, children’s treatment, and more.
It also includes details of when web users clicked buttons to book an appointment, order a repeat prescription, request a referral, or to complete an online counseling course. Millions of patients are potentially affected.
This weekend, 17 of the 20 NHS trusts that were using Meta Pixel confirmed they had pulled the tracking tool from their websites.

By Thomas Fox | Senior Reporter | 19 MAY 2023 | Buckinghamshire Live
Birchwood is "confident" it will meet the requirements set out by the CQC
A care home in Buckinghamshire has been rated 'inadequate' by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) following a recent inspection. Birchwood, on Fuller Close, Chesham, was subjected to an unannounced inspection on March 14 with the report now being released.
Birchwood, operated by Salutem Care and Education, is a residential care home providing personal care to up to 15 people at any given time, with 14 using it at the time of inspection. A previous inspection in 2019 left Birchwood with a rating of 'requires improvement.'

The Symptoms to Look Out for as Cases of Arcturus Covid Variant Reported in UK
By Sam Honey | 30 APR 2023 | BuckinghamshireLive.com
A total of 120 cases of the new variant have been confirmed across the nation.
The public is being advised to be "vigilant" as cases of a new Covid-19 variant have been reported across the country. The Arcturus strain is a sub variant of Omicron, which was first reported in January of this year, a recent risk assessment released by the World Health Organisation (WHO) has confirmed.
Also known as Omicron sub-variant XBB.1.16, cases of the virus have now been confirmed in 33 countries, including the UK and the US. Since March 22, Arcturus has been under investigation, being deemed a "variant of interest".

Exploring Transgender and Non-Binary People’s Experiences of Physical Education in Secondary Schools in the UK
I am a trans researcher contacting you to ask for your help in recruiting participants for my Masters’ dissertation which is about the experience of PE at a secondary school for trans and non-binary individuals in the UK.
Research shows that transgender and non-binary individuals often have a negative experience of secondary school and specifically Physical Education (PE) lessons, although research on the specific experience of PE is limited. PE is important because it has been linked to a range of potential benefits for young people, including improved physical and mental health. In some cases, participation in PE has also been linked to increased physical activity in adulthood, which in turn is predictive of better health outcomes. The purpose of my research is therefore to explore the experience of PE at secondary school for transgender and non-binary people across a larger sample than previous studies.
The research is open to any individual aged 18-25, who identifies as transgender and/or non-binary, who was beginning to explore their gender identity before the age of 16 and who attended at least one year of secondary school in the UK. Whilst the research is for the primary purpose of completing my MSc in Psychology, I hope that it can also contribute to the literature on the experiences of trans and non-binary people and potentially inform how PE is delivered in secondary schools in the UK. I am working under the supervision of Dr Kate Wilmut at Oxford Brookes University, and the research has been approved by the Psychology Research Ethics Committee and Oxford Brookes University.
I am writing to you to ask if you would be willing to help me find participants by sharing a link to my survey within your group, with any individuals you think may be eligible, and/or on social media.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, I look forward to hearing your response. If you wish to contact my supervisor, her contact details are below.

Priory Group Whistleblowers 'Concerned for Patient Safety'
By Angus Crawford and Tony Smith
26 April 2023 | BBC News
Two former senior managers at a large mental health care provider have told the BBC they had concerns about the safety of patients and staff.
The whistleblowers claim they felt pressure to cut costs and fill beds.
The Priory Group, which receives more than £600m of public money each year, is the biggest single private provider of mental health services to the NHS.
The company denies the claims and says it successfully treats tens of thousands of patients each year.
It adds its services "remain amongst the safest in the UK".
The former members of the Priory Group's senior management said that, when they were working for the company, they found it difficult to recruit or retain staff, due to poor pay and conditions.
They believe this resulted in patients being placed on wards that did not have staff equipped with the right skills to handle their conditions.
Since January, BBC News has been contacted by ex-patients, parents and former staff with experience of the Priory Group.
They came forward after we reported that three young women had died within eight weeks of each other in 2022 at the Cheadle Royal in Stockport - the largest of the company's 63 hospitals.
