“𝑰’𝑽𝑬 𝑵𝑶𝑻 𝑮𝑶𝑻 𝑻𝑯𝑬 𝑻𝑰𝑴𝑬…”
When it comes to making some changes to our lifestyle for the better, there are a whole host of reasons we can come up with which stops ✋us from making that initial step.

Some of the most frequent reasons clients have shared with me are:

😨 Fear of failure.
😦 Worried they will have to “give up” their favourite foods.
😦 Worried they will have to eat food they don’t like.
🫤 Confused by social media ads & the latest fads & “thing.”

👉🏻But one of the biggest reasons is TIME 🕰️
But what are we actually saying deep down?

Well, all of the above reasons 👆 are excuses we give ourselves. And we tend to be very good at that!

Yes, we all have challenges & life gets in the way but that is life & there will always be something.

So, if you haven’t got time 🕰️ to change, what are you really saying?
You’re not ill, you’re fine?
You’re not ill enough?
You’re not frightened enough?
You don’t value yourself?

👆I’m sure you’ll agree none of us want any of this.

And isn’t it better to start now, make a few tweaks or changes & learn how to manage it better for when life does get in the way?

I’m here for you & ready to help x

⚡️Massive congratulations to Ollie & Lyndsey on their incredible transformations⚡️

Ollie & Lindsey have been training here with us at Barum since we first opened, and were training consistently for a number of years before too.
Both of them absolutely work their arses off in every session, never missing a beat, and since starting working with a number of months ago things have really blown up for them both🦾
Lyndsey has lost 9kg and Ollie has lost 7kg as well as built & sculpted some incredible physiques🦾

Truly inspiring and we cannot wait to be with you as your journeys continue ⚡️

𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐀𝐑𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐁𝐄𝐍𝐄𝐅𝐈𝐓𝐒 𝐎𝐅 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐓𝐄𝐈𝐍 𝐁𝐀𝐒𝐄𝐃 𝐯 𝐂𝐄𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐋?

When it comes to breakfast, I know many of you may not even have any but instead may grab a snack bar or something on the go or for later.

For those of you who train in the gym you may not have breakfast either, & this may depend on your own training goals.

‼️But when it comes to breakfast what’s your breakfast of choice?

Pictured here, working from the bottom to top left
➡️I have an omelette & a protein overnight oats

➡️Top right I have a 40g portion of Special K (other brands are available !)

So what are a few benefits of my protein ones over my cereal?

1️⃣ Protein (with a bit of healthy fat) will keep me fuller for longer

2️⃣ The oats will give me slow releasing energy throughout the morning combined with nut butter it will lower the GI of the meal (blood sugar impact)

3️⃣ Whilst I appreciate not everyone will have time to do eggs this is a savoury breakfast & 0️⃣ sugar.
Perhaps boiling some eggs the day before instead?

👆So the above aren’t going to give me any spikes in blood sugars or trigger any cravings just keep me nice & full!

4️⃣ My cereal portion is 10g more than the recommended serving size on the box.
It’s still a relatively small portion so I’d need a lot more to come anywhere close in filling me up.

5️⃣ My cereal is mainly carbohydrates, minimal protein but has some good vitamins & minerals as with my protein ones.

‼️The Sugar content of cereals will depend on which ones you choose this one is significantly lower than some.

🤤 However, this is not going to keep me going until lunch time, I’ll be hungry & looking for something to snack on.

There are of course many different options.
🙏Please don’t think I’m saying cereal is “bad” merely demonstrating the differences between these examples.

🙏 And do let me know what your breakfast of choice is & whether this has been useful and of course please do share away!

🤔 𝑾𝑯𝒀 & 𝑾𝑯𝑬𝑹𝑬 𝑫𝑶 𝒀𝑶𝑼 𝑮𝑬𝑻 𝒀𝑶𝑼𝑹 𝑽𝑰𝑻𝑨𝑴𝑰𝑵 𝑫?

I hope you all had a lovely weekend.
Wasn’t it nice to finally get some rays!

👉🏻Let’s start with WHAT can happen if you don’t get enough:

🦴 If intakes are consistently low it can lead to the softening of the bones and osteomalacia.
Possible effects of too much may include high blood pressure, nausea, loss of appetite & calcification of soft tissue such as the kidneys & even irritability.

👉🏻WHERE CAN YOU GET IT?
Here are a few of the best food sources
🐠 Oily fish
🥚 Eggs
Fortified dairy products and liver
In addition:
☀️ Whilst it’s formed naturally by the activation of sunlight (UV) in the skin we do need to ensure we protect ourselves & be mindful of harmful sun damage can be.

⭐️ For those who follow a VEGAN or VEGETARIAN Diet
Really important that we look at sources depending on your specific needs & likes

🦵🏼WHAT does Vitamin D do?
Increases calcium absorption from the intestine & promotes & helps regulate bone formation.

☀️ Looks like the warm weather maybe here for a few days so please stay safe, enjoy it safely & keep hydrated(with water!)

👇𝑨𝑹𝑬 𝒀𝑶𝑼 𝑨 𝒀𝑶-𝒀𝑶 𝑫𝑰𝑬𝑻𝑬𝑹?
So many of the clients I work with describe themselves as a classic yo-yo dieter.

▶️This is where they have successfully lost a large amount of weight very quickly, but then regain the weight.
▶️And usually occurs because the dietary intake during weight loss is too restrictive & not able to be sustained.
▶️Invariably when this happens we tend to return to our old eating habits .
▶️Which, more often than not, leads to regaining the weight plus more than when we started out.

𝑫𝙊𝑬𝙎 𝙏𝑯𝙄𝑺 𝑺𝙊𝑼𝙉𝑫 𝑭𝘼𝑴𝙄𝑳𝙄𝑨𝙍?
The Diet Cycle..

1️⃣ Action!
You start a new “diet” you’re feeling very enthusiastic & tell everyone how amazing the new “diet” is. “The weight is just falling off!”

2️⃣ Dietary Failure:
The diet inevitably starts to “fail”, weight loss slows & you to start to slip back into old habits.

3️⃣ Guilt:
Everyone is still asking how the diet is going as you’ve been talking about it so much up to this point.
You now feel bad about yourself as you’ve been telling everyone how easy it was & how the weight was falling off.
Now it’s gone “wrong” you’d rather change the subject & not talk about it.

4️⃣ Depression:
This can then lead to a degree of depression.
Not necessarily clinical but a general negativity about the whole experience & yourself.
Losing weight & being healthier is now the last thing on your mind.

5️⃣ Low self-worth:
At this point you maybe describing yourself as
“𝙄 𝙙𝙞𝙙𝙣’𝙩 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙥𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙧 𝙞𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙨𝙣’𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙙𝙞𝙚𝙩 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙢𝙚.”
This is where you may associate the failure as your fault rather than the diet.
I mean there are so many social media posts & people saying how great it was.
You conclude the problem must be YOU.

6️⃣ Counterproductive behaviour:
This is where you may start to binge possibly on crisps, biscuits and or chocolate because it tastes good, it boosts & lifts you momentarily.
Perhaps it’s the booze as this makes you feel good & takes you to another place.
Or you just don’t care about your weight.
You convince yourself you’re happy & a bit of self -indulgence is good for you.

7️⃣ The last stage:
Something triggers you again to lose the weight & you’ve just read about an amazing diet that everyone is talking about.

🙄 And..the cycle starts all over again.
BUT it doesn’t have to be that way…
BREAK that cycle & Message ME TODAY & start to make healthier choices which are sustainable & enables you to lead a normal life x

I’ve been very privileged to work with this lovely lady, both on her nutrition and working 1:1 in the gym with her.
She has achieved some incredible things - too many to mention.
It’s been amazing to see her grow in confidence in so many areas & not just in her nutrition & fitness,

🫵🏻 𝐇𝐎𝐖 𝐃𝐎 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐃𝐄𝐀𝐋 𝐖𝐈𝐓𝐇 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐒 𝐖𝐇𝐄𝐍 𝐋𝐈𝐅𝐄 𝐆𝐄𝐓𝐒 𝐓𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇?

Firstly, let’s spare a thought for all those of you who have tough things to deal with at the moment.
Whilst I say this, my thoughts are also with all those innocent people caught up in a war zone or in poverty across the globe 🌎.

Life has a habit of throwing things our way when we’re least expecting them.
Let’s face it most of us probably take our every day lives for granted & then when we’re struck a blow from nowhere, everything can change.

👉🏻So, what do you do when something happens?
How do you deal with it?

Everyone has different coping mechanisms from food 🥘 chocolate 🍫 alcohol 🍷 to not eating 🥣

Possibly go into themselves & become low, are in denial, excessive exercise, shut themselves away, stay in bed 🛌….plus much more I’m sure.

I guess my message today is, for anyone going through tough times is to:

💚 Look after yourself & be kind to yourself.
👄 Talk - whether that’s to your friends, family or someone impartial - it will help,
❤️Treasure every moment
👩‍👩‍👧‍👦 Surround yourself with positive people
❌ Try NOT to find comfort from food & drink it’s a viscous circle ⭕️ which will potentially make you even more unhappier in the end.
✅ Try & do something positive which makes you happy or will have a positive impact on you.

Whatever it maybe, there will always be someone who can help you, listen & get you on the right path if needed.

Lisa x

⚡️Member Spotlight, Charlie⚡️

Q: What got you started on your fitness journey?
Charlie: I started training when I was about 19 years old, I first went to the gym with my brother and his friend and really enjoyed it and the rest is history for me now, I couldn’t live without the gym, it’s a nonnegotiable for me.
There’s no overall goals other than to remain consistent and better myself, the gym, bodybuilding, and the whole lifestyle helps me stay in check, accountable, motivated and keeps my mind clear.

Q: What do you enjoy most about training here at Barum Barbell?
Charlie: I love the friendly atmosphere, the genuine interest from staff into people’s personal goals, and the range of ages and abilities from beginners to advanced it’s a great mix and I would say that everyone supports each other, and a big one for me is investment into new equipment, when a place you love spending your time is always improving that shouts value, value for the members and facilities.

Q: Favourite & least favourite exercises?
Charlie: I’m gonna say instead of favourite exercise and least favourite.

Favourite - LEGS
Least - ARMS

Q: What advice would you give anyone looking to start on their fitness journey?
Charlie: Watch, listen and learn, always learn from people around you, never be afraid to ask for help.

Stay consistent because nothing happens overnight.

Set small goals.

Realise and understand there is no finish line.

Take photos and look at your body composition change.

Carbs won’t make you fat.

Exercise is the best medicine for anyone suffering with mental health. FACT.

11/04/2024

⚡️Member Spotlight: Jessie⚡️

Q: What got you started on your fitness journey?
Jessie: Life happened and I needed an escape. Something to free the mind. I first started running and just lifting a little weight here and there. I soon became hooked to the routine and challenge of weight training. My current goals are to continuously grow both physically and mentally. After taking weight loss to an unhealthy extreme I’m currently working on my relationship with food and getting strong again.

Q: What do you enjoy most about training here at Barum Barbell?
Jessie: It’s just such a comfortable environment to train in. A fun, encouraging space where everyone is working on their own personal goals whilst supporting the journey of others.

Q: Favourite & least favourite exercises?
Jessie: There’s not many exercises I don’t enjoy, it’s more like a love hate relationship probably with lunges. Whereas i have sooo many favourites, but if I have to choose then I’d say RDL’s.

Q: What advice would you give anyone looking to start on their fitness journey?
Jessie: Get stuck in. Do it for you & don’t compare yourself to others. Don’t be afraid to ask for help & don’t be scared to fail. Just have fun with it, learn how your body works and moves. You are capable of so much more than you think!

⚡️New Kit Coming Soon⚡️

⚡️Brand new plate loaded seated calf raise⚡️

This calf raise will be with us very soon due to it being in stock and not made to order😃

The other items that we have ordered recently are all made to order on an 8-10week lead time, so we are just waiting for a confirmation of completion but will be with us for summer training fun😎

We also have a few other extra bits & pieces due in this week, so keep your eyes peeled for those 👀 and with our 2nd expansion underway we will have more items of kit being added throughout summer too⚡️

05/04/2024

⚡️Member Spotlight: Ash⚡️

Q: What got you started on your fitness journey?
Ash: It was probably my love for 80’s action movies! Growing up watching Van Damme, Stallone and Arnold was a great inspiration, however, It’s only recently that I have started taking training more seriously and pushing myself harder. My goals are to build the best possible version of myself, both physically and mentally and have a good time whilst doing so.

Q: What do you enjoy most about training here at Barum Barbell?
Ash: I love the great range of equipment, the friendly atmosphere and the sense of comradery you get within an independent gym. TJ and Kurt are always on hand to offer their wisdom.. and the yeti juice.

Q: Favourite & least favourite exercises?
Ash: I go through phases with favourites. At the moment I’m trying to focus on shoulders and I’m enjoying delt raises and presses. As good as they are, my least favourite exercises would be the explosive olympic lifts... I’m lazy so I don’t do any of them and favour more of a bodybuilding routine.

Q: What advice would you give anyone looking to start on their fitness journey?
Ash: Don’t get caught up with all the crazy new exercises you see online. Keep it simple to start with and stick with it.
If you’re thinking about joining a gym, don’t think, just do it!
Don’t wait for that motivation to join, the motivation will come from the feeling you get by starting your journey, then it will fuel itself by your results.
But be warned, once you start seeing the results it becomes addictive! Most of all, enjoy it.
