Foot pain? Shin Splints? Plantar Fasciitis?

We see it every day - runners that are in pain. And they are usually managing this pain by smashing their muscles with massage balls and foam rollers, stretching every day and munching on pain killers and gritting their teeth to get through that 10k run they’ve been working towards.

What if I told you that insoles / massage balls and static stretches probably ARE NOT THE ANSWER.. πŸš«πŸ‘Ÿ

There are 33 joints in the foot - it is made to MOVE and adapt and move according to the surface it's on. 🦢

When we see runners presenting with pain, our first question is NOT

β€˜Why aren’t you stretching every day?’

It’s

β€˜Which areas of the foot and ankle aren’t moving so well?’ OR β€˜what injury in the past led to the foot doing TOO MUCH?’

If you learn to get that foot greased up and mobile and then add the right loading / ability to generate propulsion, your symptoms will usually melt away to nothing

πŸ’‰ Is Surgery The Answer to your knee pain woes?

Was your 10 minute GP or consultant visit enough information to make an informed choice on surgery?

Unlikely.

So let’s talk about it.

You feel like you’ve tried everything and the knee pain is still there?

I feel you. But I also feel like you may not have actually TRIED EVERYTHING and shortly I’ll describe what we do that’s likely very different to any treatment you’ve received so far.

But first, let's talk going under the knife. What you may not have been told is that in cases of chronic knee pain, getting surgery provides no more benefit than conservative treatment. Yes, I agree this MIGHT be different for you, but you should make sure it’s the right choice for you.

If your knee was collapsing below you, unstable, getting locked into position, there's a high likelihood surgery could really help resolve this issue. (we see hundreds of knee patients per year and this accounts for less than 1% of those people)

If you have an okay range of motion and stability in your knee, but it's just painful, it’s not very likely surgery is the answer - in fact surgery is just another assault on your nervous system that could cause its own issues.

Now the reason your conservative treatment may not have worked up to this point due to a lack of awareness of previous injuries contributing to a change in biomechanics, or a lack of stress and rest management or a lack of a high level treatment plan that actually gets you to the level you need for your day to day.

This is why our approach is so effective.

My recommendation is that you get a crystal clear idea of where you are at in a graded exposure plan i.e. what level of exercises are good / non painful and which ones are too much. This is a place to start.

When you spend enough time at the correct level of rehab, you tend to progress to the next level because the body is an adaptive machine! Rinse and repeat and suddenly you’re back doing couch to 5k or going hiking in the Mournes!

You may feel like you’ve tried it all, but if you haven’t tried working with us, you have not tried everything! πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸ’ͺ

Do you have stiff achy knees when you get up out of bed? Or when doing the stairs? Or when getting out of your office chair?

Let me tell you the most effective tips for greasing up those achy knees:

Motion is Lotion

πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈ Never underestimate regular walking - a key part of any knee rehab program and such an underappreciated form of exercise. Sometimes this alone is enough to resolve your knee joint niggles - thousands of reps of exactly what that joint is designed to do!

Get Quality Rest

πŸ’€ Guess What? The less quality sleep you get and the more stress your system is under overall, the more likely you are to experience pain and injury. And the exact opposite is also true - you can more or less eliminate a pain experience by getting yourself into β€˜Rest and Digest’.

You’re not in pain while you’re asleep. Do this more often where possible to get out of the pain cycle and allow your body to mend and this brings me to the next point..
