John Herivel, the Ulster-Scots codebreaker who worked at Bletchley Park during WW2 and helped break the Enigma Machine, was born on this day in 1918.

John Jamieson Herivel (from the Channel Islands) and his wife, Josephine Allison Moat whose ancestry can be traced back to a rich Ulster-Scots heritage. During the Victorian era the Moats were well-known stationers and printers in Rosemary Street, Belfast.

In 1937, Herival was awarded a Kitchener Scholarship to study mathematics at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, where his supervisor was Gordon Welchman. Welchman secretly worked at the decryption centre, and soon recruited Herivel.

During the efforts to break Enigma, Herivel found a way to secretly decipher certain ring settings in the Enigma machine, which would become known as the Herivel Tip and would be instrumental in deciphering the code.

Because of the importance of his contribution, Herivel was singled out and introduced to Winston Churchill during a visit to Bletchley Park.

After the end of the war, Herivel joined Queen's University Belfast, where he became reader in the History and Philosophy of Science. He published books and articles on Isaac Newton, Joseph Fourier and Christiaan Huygens.

In 1978 he retired to Oxford, where he became a Fellow of All Souls College, where he published an autobiographical account of his time at Bletchley Park. He passed away in Oxford in 2011.

A blue plaque was unveiled in his honour at his old school in Belfast, Methodist College, in 2022, funded by the Ulster-Scots Agency.

JOIN THE ORANGE ORDER

In Ulster in the Seventies they came for the "B" Specials and i didn't speak up because i wasn't in the "B" specials.

In the Eighties they came for the Ulster Defence Regiment and i didn't speak up because i wasn't a member of the UDR.

In the Nineties they came for the Royal Ulster Constabulary and i didn't speak up because I wasn't a member of the RUC .

In the Twenty first Century they came for the Orange Institution but i wasn't member so i didn't speak up.

Then they came for me. But by that time there was no one left to speak up for anyone.

Nows the time to join the orange institution, become a member and then you will have your chance to speak up for something! 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

On a Day Like Today ~ February 13, 1689. HM Queen Mary II acceded to the throne alongside her husband, HM King William III, as joint sovereigns.

Mary was born at St James's Palace in late April 1662 as the eldest daughter of the future HM King James II of England and his first wife, Anne Hyde. At the time of her birth, her uncle, HM King Charles II, was on the throne. She was baptized into the Anglican faith in the Chapel Royal at St James's, and was named after her ancestor, Mary, Queen of Scots.

William III was born at The Hague in the Dutch Republic in November 1650. He was he only child of stadtholder William II, Prince of Orange, and his wife Mary, The Princess Royal, daughter of HM King Charles I of England. Thus, William was a nephew of Charles II as well as his future father-in-law, the future James II. William was 4th in line to the English throne after his uncle James, at the time, Duke of York, his future bride Mary, and Mary's sister Anne, later know as HM Queen Anne. His father died 8 days before his birth from smallpox which made him the sovereign Prince of Orange from birth.

William's mother showed little personal interest in her son, sometimes being absent for years, and had always deliberately kept apart from Dutch society. William's education was first laid in the hands of several Dutch governesses. From 1659 William spent seven years at the University of Leiden for a formal education.

In 1660 his mother died of smallpox at Whitehall Palace, London, while visiting her brother, the recently restored King Charles II. In her will, Mary requested Charles II look after William's interests, and Charles II now demanded that the States of Holland end their interference, a request that they complied with in September 1661. From 1672 he governed as Stadtholder William III of Orange over Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Gelderland, and Overijssel of the Dutch Republic.

At the age of fifteen, Mary and William, who were first cousins, were betrothed. It is said that when Mary's father told her of the upcoming marriage "she wept all that afternoon and all the following day".

William and a tearful Mary were married at St James's Palace in November 1677. Mary's animated and personable nature made her popular with the Dutch people, and her marriage to a Protestant Prince was popular in Britain. Within months of the marriage Mary was pregnant; however, she suffered a miscarriage which may have permanently impaired her ability to have children. Her childlessness would be the greatest source of unhappiness in her life.

Upon the death of Charles II without legitimate issue in February 1685, Mary's father acceded to the throne as King James II in England and Ireland and James VII in Scotland. Mary thus became heir presumptive.

Tolerance for King James II's Catholicism did not apply to all things in general and when the English and Scottish Parliaments refused to pass his measures, James II attempted to impose them by decree.

In June 1688, two events turned dissent into a crisis; the first was the birth of James's son and heir James Francis Edward, threatening to create a Roman Catholic dynasty and excluding Anglican daughter Mary and Protestant William. The second was the prosecution of the Seven Bishops for seditious libel. This was viewed as an assault on the Church of England and their acquittal later that same month destroyed James's political authority in England. Anti-Catholic riots in England and Scotland now made it seem that only his removal from the throne could prevent a civil war.

Aa a Protestant, William had participated in several wars against the powerful Catholic King of France, Louis XIV, in coalition with Protestant and Catholic powers in Europe. Many Protestants heralded him as a champion of their faith. William, who was supported by a group of influential British political and religious leaders, invaded England in what became known as the Glorious Revolution. In November 1688 William landed at the southern English port of Brixham. By December of that same year King James II was deposed and fled England. (PLEASE NOTE: The events that led up to them taking over the throne have been oversimplified for the sake of keeping this post shorter.)

Thus, on this day in 1689 the English Parliament passed the Declaration of Right, in which it deemed that James, by attempting to flee had in fact abdicated the government of the realm, and that the Throne had thereby become vacant. Parliament offered the Crown not to James's son, who would have been the heir apparent under normal circumstances, but to Mary and William as joint sovereigns. The only precedent for a joint monarchy dated from the 16th century when Queen Mary I married Philip of Spain and it was agreed that the Spanish King would take the title of King, but only during his wife's lifetime and even then, with heavy restrictions on his powers.

William, however, would be King even after Mary's death, and would be "the sole and full exercise of the regal power [would be] executed by the said Prince of Orange in the names of the said Prince and Princess during their joint lives." This declaration was later extended to exclude not only James II and his Catholic son, from the throne, but all Catholics, since "it hath been found by experience that it is inconsistent with the safety and welfare of this Protestant kingdom to be governed by a papist Prince."

It is important to note that Mary II did not become a Queen Consort, she was in fact Queen Regnant, which was her birthright for being the eldest child of a King, whose only son was excluded for being Catholic.

During their reign Mary mostly deferred to her husband when he was in England. She did, however, act alone when William was engaged in military campaigns abroad, proving herself to be a powerful, firm, and effective ruler.

Mary II and William III reigned together until Mary's death in December 1694 after which William ruled as sole monarch until his own death in March 1702. As they had no children upon William's death Mary's siter Anne, acceded to the throne as HM Queen Anne.

To help raise funds to purchase a new banner our brethren have decided to do a sponsored banner carry from North Belfast Orange Memorial Hall to Carrickfergus Castle on Saturday 30th September 2023, a total distance of 9.8 miles.

Our current banner is 32 years old, but unfortunately has a considerably large tear that's beyond permanent repair. It's also approaching the 125th anniversary of the lodges formation and we feel there would be no better way to mark this milestone than to unfurl a new banner.

Sponsor sheets will be given out to our brethren over the next couple of weeks and I would ask for your support to make this sponsored banner carry a success. If you'd like to donate, please get in contact with any of our members or you can message our FB page directly.

Many Thanks, Belfast Harbour LOL 1883

Ulster Convention LOL242, Sandy Row District, Belfast

During the 1890’s there was a large rally of Protestant Churches, of all denominations in Botanic Gardens, Belfast. Following the rally some of the men, not all Orangemen, got into conversation. The topic soon came up regarding the troubles in the ‘South’, with The Home Rulers and the way Protestant people were moving from areas away from R.C.’s, who had moved in, just as has been seen in parts of Belfast and Londonderry. This group of men, who got to know each other well, some from the Lisburn Road, Donegall Road, Sandy Row and Grosvenor Road, all decided to start a new lodge, as they all had the same interest of self help and been on call for each other when trouble came from the ‘wrong type’ of neighbours. The name chosen for the lodge was Ulster Convention LOL242, the same name as the rally held in Botanic Gardens, where the men originally started their discussions, which led to the lodge formation.

Unfortunately we have no written record of the starting of our lodge. As with the records of many old lodges, they had been given to the waste paper drive, during the war, to help the war effort. It was also common practice during the Second World War to remove all inflammable material from buildings in case of fire bombs, of which Belfast suffered it’s fair share during the WWII.
