This Saturday 17th August will be our last day trading in our Newcastle store.
Sometimes in business you’ve got to just put your hand up and admit you’ve made a mistake. 🙋🏼♀️
Unfortunately, Newcastle just wasn’t as busy all year round as we would like. Turns out the decision to open a take away only unit in a sea side town with Irish weather wasn’t my finest moment.
It just wasn’t at the level we are used to in all our other spots and so our foray to the seaside is ending.
Huge thanks to the guys who ran the place and the customers who came to visit. Despite us leaving Newcastle prematurely, we’ve really enjoyed our time there.
But whilst this door may be closing…another one will be opening shortly. Only this time, much much closer to HQ…

Warning. Incoming soppy post…
It’s our birthday. Ten years since we opened our first shop on the Ormeau Road.
Born and bred a few streets away, I spent all my formative years on the road. There was definitely no Nordic inspired coffee shop on it in the 80s and 90s!
So it’s surreal that we are ten years residing in Rea’s Electrical, with 6 other units and maybe just maybe a couple of plans in the pipeline. I am so so grateful to the following who got us to this milestone:
1- The KO team. The best in the business and by far the best part of it for me.
2- Our regulars, many with us since day one. Their craic makes our day.
3- My select group of mates in the industry. They keep me sane.
4- My family and best buds, they’ve a job keeping me sane too!
5- The other half who has always fully supported my latest “project”. This one didn’t turn out too bad…
6- And the most important one last, my donor, without whom there would be no Kaffe O.
To mark our big birthday we are donating to a transplant charity very close to my heart (kidney!)
…though there may also have been an espresso martini or two on the go on Friday.
Oh and finally…
To the guy who left the review saying we were a little too pretentious for the Ormeau Road when we first opened… how you like them apples…all ten of them
O x
Ten years - we’ve some amazing suppliers but there’s a few guys who’ve been with us since day one that deserve an extra special shout out…
Suppliers who have genuinely become friends.
Ricco - our coffee roasting, advice giving, espresso fuelled, full of craic, one and only Danish legend.
Mr Stylografik Paul - the non coffee drinking branding genius behind brand Kaffe O.
Suki - Oscar and the team, a Belfast institution.
Green city - our ethical whole food Co operative who supply nearly all our whole foods. We trust these guys implicitly knowing that there will be no one we don’t want to work with on our menus.
Clandeboye Estate - The best yoghurt known to man!
Kokoa collection - Supplying the best hot chocolate on the market from ethical sources.
Broste - Ten years later still working with guys who we visited their Copenhagen showroom over ten years ago to find the perfect cups for our shop.
BGA architects - who’ve been our architects since the first unit and been involved with every unit since
Noel Savage Construction - who’ve done every build and fit out not to mention the numerous emergency fixes as the years have gone by.
Alison Reid - has negotiated every lease and legal issue since day one… and former lawyers defo make the worst clients!
MEET THE TEAMS…
Time to show some love for the Kaffe O Crew ❤️
I think you’ll all agree - we have the best bunch about!
If you’ve been coming to Kaffe O long enough, chances are you’ll have long forgotten what you drink because the guys will have it ready for you when you come in.
The work these guys do and the fun they bring to the shops every day is so appreciated and a huge part of why we’re here celebrating our 10th birthday.
So a massive thank you to everyone you see behind the counter everyday & to the people behind the scenes keeping the wheels turning, past and present.
But we thought we’d ask them.
What’s the best thing about working at Kaffe O?
Aindriu - (7 years) Tanya.
Ruth - (4 years) Our NEW goji & pomegranate iced tea!
Liz & Flora - (2 years/1.5 years) -Our customers, working with our besties everyday & working for a great company.
Liz - (1 year) Nattering with customers, making coffee & working with Mark!
Tereza - (3 years) The amazing coffee & super tasty Kaffe O compote! I feel super blessed to be supported and appreciated by the company and the whole Kaffe O team.

Bolle med ost.
(BMO for short.)
Every morning in Copenhagen bageris and kaffes are preparing freshly baked bolle med ost, or a “bread bun with cheese”.
It’s been a hugely popular staple breakfast in Denmark for decades - and we’re excited to bring it to Belfast next Monday 31/7.
Ours is a freshly baked vegan organic rye roll served in the morning with Northern Irish butter, homemade mixed berry jam & cheddar cheese.
They’ll also be available packed with fresh fillings for lunch after 10am everyday to sit in or takeaway.
Meat will be filled with Danish salami, manchego cheese, mustard infused mayo & balsamic dressed rocket.
Fish with smoked salmon with sweet pickled onion, rocket & lemon and dill cream cheese.
Veggie packed with crispy rosemary roast potatoes & red pepper with crispy onions, watercress and roast garlic aioli.
Which one will you try first?? 🤤
MEET THE TEAM…
Let’s show some appreciation for our Kitchen & Delivery crew 🥣🚐
You may not recognise these guys from the shops…
(Well, maybe Paul having a wee cuppa and a natter somewhere)
…but without the hard work these guys put in 7 days a week behind the scenes to make Kaffe O go we wouldn’t be where we are today.
Head chef Sharon, Anna, Lukasz, Keira, Lynne & Roberta make our kitchen team. They’re the guys in at 5am every morning working hard to bake & prep all of your Kaffe O faves, hand making every element on our food menu & risking RSI’s rolling mountains of peanut butter balls you guys get through on a weekly basis. (See previous post with an actual mountain of peanut butter).
When our delivery team, Paul & Richard, are done with their first round of deliveries they’re usually running around sorting the shops out, fixing equipment, grabbing coffees for the kitchen and making sure everyone’s good to go for the day. And calling in for a bit of craic - of course.
Seriously massive THANK YOU to all of you for everything you do ❤️.
Nordic Coffee
A lot of you ask - why Nordic?
A massive part of what makes us Nordic is our coffee.
From day one on the Ormeau Road the coffee we’ve served on our bars has been roasted in Copenhagen by the brilliant . It was love at first sip.
We’re proud to say we’re the only place you’ll find this blend of Guatemalan, Costa Rican & Ethiopian beans being served on bar outside Copenhagen.
Our Ethos -
To make wholesome food all ourselves using the best possible ingredients, organic where possible.
There are some items that have been on the menu since day one… caramel squares, brownies… and more.
We feel though the time is right to go back to our Scandi roots so we are planning couple changes… don’t worry peanut butter balls aren’t going anywhere and no, the boiled eggs aren’t coming back! Please don’t make me explain the economics of this again….
But- we are introducing our new Bolle Med Øst (BMO). A new organic rye roll we are going to bake fresh for you every morning. Add butter, jam and even cheese for the full Danish breakfast experience.
We also plan to fill these rolls with some new fillings- which will be ready to go from after 10am each morning in the shops.
It feels like everything has got a bit supersized for us on the lunch front these days- so we wanted to introduce something healthy, fresh and value for money. And also not so big you need an hour nap after eating it!
Would love to hear what you think of these… and no fear the chicken & chorizo brød ain’t going anywhere.
