College Residential students enjoyed the end of summer term recently by taking part in different fun activities.

On the 19th June, they hosted their very own sports day with a range of different events taking place including basketball, ping pong, football and an egg and spoon race. Students and staff got involved and enjoyed the evening.

Taking advantage of the sunny weather, everyone enjoyed a BBQ together to enjoy plenty of food whilst soaking in the sun.

Today saw the final day of QAC's Annual Summer Games!

We hosted the QA Factor final, VI sprint race and handed the students their certificates and medals for all of the events which took place over the three days.

To celebrate the students were able to go to the disco which took place in the sports hall and heard a performance from the QA Factor winner Dua.

Some of QAC’s residential students were able to vote yesterday. Joe and Alex were supported by staff to go to the polling station whilst others had done postal votes.

Alex commented: “Today was the first time I have voted in a general election and it was a great experience. I have been able to choose who I would like to be our government. The issues that are important to me are equal rights for everyone and more funding for education. I have waited many years for life changing surgeries but the NHS has not had enough support from the government. Teachers, education staff, nurses, doctors, carers, emergency services and lots of other people work very hard but have had a hard time over the last 10 years and I wanted to help to make a change for our country.”

Student social media takeover! The following is written by Illious a Creative Media student who talks all things Summer Games Day 2.

“QAC’s Annual Summer Games on Thursday with the sun shining, had different sports events and activities like welly throwing, egg and spoon race, relay race, 100 metre sprint and a hula hoop challenge.

One highlight I saw was a student throwing a welly 20 metres, it was incredible watching the whole college cheering him on.”

Earlier this week, two of our PSHE leads, Sam and Nav visited the West & East Midlands PSHE Seminar lead by PSHE association. They were able to share ideas, make local connections, and learn from other experts.

PSHE is a key part of our students' journey, so it's great to have Sam and Nav bringing back fresh ideas to keep our curriculum engaging and supportive! Thank you to The PSHE Association for hosting the event.

We've all recently heard about displays in the nightly skies and not everyone has had the chance to see them.

We thought it'd be a great idea to have our own private showings and invited Birmingham's Wonderdome Planetarium to provide us with a tour of the solar system using their mobile planetarium.

There was lots of information given and lots of questions asked, the students had a great time that was enhanced by the presenter.

Last week, our Preparation For Life Step up Blue group visited "Reloved Revolution", a local charity shop based in Harborne, who had been advertising for male and female clothes. The group worked hard to organise and sort through old stock from the college Thrift Shop and were keen to donate.

In total the group were able to donate nine bags of clothes the students were proud of their hard work and were keen to find out more about the shop. The students had the opportunity to work on their communication and numeracy skills.

Well done to the whole group!

is the first week of June every year. It's a chance to recognise the fantastic contribution volunteers make to our College and say thank you!

We currently have a range of volunteers who offer their free time and skills to support the College, working in different areas and departments.

Along with these fantastic individuals, we also have the Board of Governors who volunteer their time and all bring a wide range of skills and expertise from their professional lives to benefit the QAC community.

A big 'thank you' to everyone who volunteers for QAC, we all appreciate the support our volunteers bring to the College and the work they put in to be here and help in any way they can!

Make Our College Your College...

Queen Alexandra College (QAC) is a national residential College and charity based in Birmingham that supports a diverse range of student abilities and needs. We offer courses for young people aged 16-25yrs as well as employment focused and supported living programmes.

We welcome students who come to our College from all over the country – as well as many who are local to us. QAC has been at its current location since 1903 and can trace its history back to 1847, when it was decided that a school for the blind should be established.

Today, in addition to supporting people who have a visual impairment, we offer support and guidance for students with autistic spectrum conditions, those with moderate to severe learning difficulties, students with physical and other disabilities.

Ultimately, we have a great mix of students which adds to the wonderful atmosphere here in College. Class sizes are small and support levels high.
